Trekking Northern Thailand

This family holiday to Thailand is ideal for those who want to mix experiencing the best of Thailand with time to relax and enjoy the beach.

As with all of our holidays, this trip can be completely tailored to fit your requirements, so just let us know the kind of trip you enjoy.

This itinerary begins in Chiang Mai with a full day to discover Chiang Mai like a local.

From Chiang Mai head north into the Hilltribe region for an overnight stay in a Hilltribe Village with some short trekking and a bamboo raft ride.

This is a totally different experience and a great insight into one of the hilltribe cultures of the north of Thailand.

From Chiang Mai fly to Bangkok where we have included a full day touring Bangkok with a guide. Travel by Boat, Sky Train and Tuk Tuk and see the best of Bangkok.

Fly south and spend two nights at Elephant Hills in the stunning Khao Sok National Park. Enjoy jungle trekking, canoeing and a wonderful Elephant Experience (bathing and feeding the elephants).

From Khao Sok head to little visited Khanom and go in search of Pink Dolphins aboard a local fishing boat. Attend a merit making ceremony with monks before returning to Khanom.

Finish the trip with a few days in Koh Samui, which offers plenty of things to see and do as well as a great choice of resorts for families.

Day 3: Chiang Mai

Today experience Chiang Mai like a local. Visit a farmhouse on the outskirts of the city, travel by longtail boat along the Mae Ping River, walk through the fresh food market, and take a trishaw through the city.

Travel thirty minutes north of Chiang Mai city to a local farmhouse in Mae Rim and enjoy a leisurely stroll around the grounds before boarding a longtail boat for a 30-minute cruise along the rural Mae Ping River.

Along the riverbanks see traditional wooden houses and luxury modern residences.

Arrive at the boat landing and walk to the charismatic Wararos Market to experience the bustle of local Northern Thai life in this colourful food market.

From the market, travel old style by trishaw along Tapae Road, past the crumbling city walls to the impressive Wat Phra Singh, in the middle of the old city.

Overnight Chiang Mai. Breakfast included.

Day 4: Palong Hill Tribe Village

After breakfast you will be collected for the drive north by trekking truck into the mountains near Chiang Dao.

Stop at a local market where our guide will do some shopping for your trip and explain all about the different ingredients he will be using for meals during the trek.

We continue to the Chiang Dao Elephant Camp, the most scenic elephant camp in Thailand. See how the elephants haul logs and watch them enjoy bathing in the river.

Afterwards take a bamboo raft trip along gentle rapids.

Continue to a Karen village for lunch. After lunch start the trek, which should take about 2 hours, with many stops along the way.

After reaching the Palong village the children can participate in activities in the village, such as picking fruit, collecting vegetables for dinner, feeding the pigs and taking part in sports with children from the village.

Parents can relax, explore the village or learn some Thai cooking by helping the guide prepare dinner.

After dinner your guide will take you to one of the village houses where you will meet some of the villagers.

The Palong are originally from Myanmar and fled to Thailand as recently as 1984. Overnight in one of the village houses.

Accommodation: Palong Hilltribe Village. Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner included.

Day 5: Palong Hill tribe Village

After breakfast your guide will show you around the village and explain about the village shrine and about the ‘huja rawl’, the ‘village heart’.

Visit the local school, say goodbye to the villagers and start trekking for about 1.5 hours to the Karen village.

Along the way stop at a Lahu village and visit the very interesting spirit temple and a blacksmith.

Continue trekking to the Karen village and drive to a restaurant for lunch before driving back to Chiang Mai.

The last stop on the way back will be at one of Chiang Mai’s famous orchid nurseries.

Transfer to the airport for your evening flight to Bangkok.

On arrival in Bangkok you will be met and transferred to your hotel at the end of a quite long and active day.

(If you prefer, this night can be spent in Chiang Mai, with an early flight to Bangkok the following morning).

Overnight Bangkok. Breakfast & Lunch included.

Day 6: Bangkok

Today enjoy a full day touring around Bangkok by all means of local transport.

An easy and fun way for the family to get around Bangkok accompanied by a guide. Travel by car, boat, sky train and tuk tuk.

Visit Jim Thompson’s House, the Grand Palace and Wat Pho. Everyone will have a one hour foot massage at Wat Pho before returning to the hotel.

Transfer directly to Elephant Hills in Khao Sok National Park and the beautiful surroundings of the park.

After lunch at Elephant Hills enjoy a guided jungle river canoe trip down the Sok River, paddled by a local river guide, passing limestone mountains and cliffs and primary rainforest thousands of years old. Hornbills can sometimes be seen overhead or reptiles basking on the riverbanks.

After the canoe trip, head to the Elephant Sanctuary and see, touch and learn about the life of Thai elephants.

The local guide will explain about the mahout, the elephant caretaker. This is a great way to get close up to the elephants, by preparing their meals, feeding and washing them.

Elephant trekking isn’t included as we don’t consider it an ethical or sustainable way to protect Thailand’s elephant population.

After the Elephant Experience, check-in to your luxury safari tent at Elephant Hill’s main camp. Relax and enjoy the panoramic views of the surrounding jungle-covered mountains.

Overnight at Elephant Hills Luxury Tented Main Camp. All meals included.

Day 8: Khao Sok National Park

Self paddle canoe through the rainforest channels.

Wake up to the sounds of gibbons calling in the valley and birds calling from the bushes next to the tent.

Today explore Cheow Larn Lake by local long-tail boat. Cruise across emerald waters passing towering rainforest covered Limestone Mountains to the ‘Guilinof Southern Thailand’.

This combined with a myriad of other species hidden in the rainforest-covered hills make it one of the most unique and important areas of rainforest in South East Asia.

Head to the floating Elephant Hills Rainforest Camp, situated in the heart of the national park, and check in to your luxury tent set on a platform over the lake.

After a buffet lunch, enjoy a walk through the Primary Rainforest. The trek is along easy jungle footpaths, although the occasional stretch is a little bit steep and it can be slippery when wet.

This is one of the world’s oldest rainforests, with a great variety of exotic plants, tropical hardwood trees with huge roots, orchids, palms, ferns, bamboos and mosses.

Hornbills are common, gibbons can often be heard calling to their mates, a macaque or a leaf monkey may be swinging through the branches, beautiful butterflies flit around.

After the Jungle trek, head back to the Floating Camp for sunset and a buffet dinner.

Overnight at Elephant Hills luxury floating tented camp.

Taled Bay is home to Indo-Pacific Humpback dolphins or “Pink” Dolphins. With luck you will be able to see these rare creatures.

Continue sailing to Nui Nok Island for a monks “merit making” ceremony – a great little insight into Buddhism in Thailand.

After lunch, cruise along the back of Tham Island, and take part in sea-grass planting.

Return to the hotel in the late afternoon with the rest of the day to enjoy at the resort.

Overnight Khanom. Breakfast & Lunch included.

Khao Sok National Park

Khao Sok National Park is one of Southern Thailand’s most beautiful areas.

A protected National Park with some of the oldest rainforest in the world, jungle clad limestone peaks, meandering rivers and picturesque lakes, Khao Sok is a nature lovers paradise.

Elephant Hills

Elephant Hills is a luxury tented-camp with a main camp on the edge of the Khao Sok National Park and a newer over-water camp in a stunning lake setting.

Accommodation consists of luxury ‘tents’ modeled on the luxury African game safari camps.

Activities at elephant Hills include the highly popular elephant experience, which includes washing and feeding the elephants.

Canoeing, trekking and sailing across the lake on a traditional Burmese Junk are also offered

Khanom

Khanom is a small country town on the Gulf of Thailand with a local population of 11,000 people from all walks of life, with the main sources of livelihood being farming and fishing.

The agricultural landscape is carpeted with coconut, rubber, palm oil, pineapple and banana plantations with grazing cows roaming freely.

One can really enjoy laid-back lifestyle of the friendly villagers.

Khanom has several hidden surprises with unspoilt beaches, waterfalls and interesting caves.

To the north of Khanom is the beautiful natural park of Khao Luang.

The waterfront of Khanom offers a breeding ground for rare pink dolphins and trips to spot dolphins are very popular.

Currently we only recommend one resort in Khanom, the boutique Aava Resort.

Aava Resort & Spa

Aava Resort & Spa is located in Khanom, one of Thailand's last pristine tourist locations, where virtually untouched palm-lined beaches back on to limestone mountains and retain a beauty barely touched by development.

Aava Resort & Spa sits on beautiful Nadan beach, a 9 km stretch of pristine golden sand and clear blue water.

A Scandinavian family owns Aava Resort, and the Scandinavian influence can be seen in the unique architecture and design of the resort, the work of one of Finland’s top designers.

Aava combines traditional Thai friendliness and family values with Scandinavian quality and elegance.

Aava offers four different room types, from cosy Deluxe Bungalows to the beachfront Poolside and Family Villas.

What’s so Special?

We think the mix of Scandinavian minimalism and efficiency with Thai style and hospitality are a winning combination.

Bear in Mind

Khanom is known for its rare pink dolphins. Locals here are proud of this rare animal species and wish to protect its original idyllic living environment on the coast line of Khanom.

Koh Samui

Tourism, coconuts and fishing are the mainstays of the economy on Koh Samui, a small and scenic island in the Gulf of Thailand.

Resorts on Koh Samui can't be built higher than the tallest palm tree which has kept Koh Samui's resort development more low key than in Phuket.

Koh Samui has several great options for family accommodation and there is no shortage of things to do for families in Koh Samui.

Ang Thong National Marine Park

Ang Thong Marine Park consists of 40 lush islands dotted amidst the blue seas around Koh Samui.

This full day trip by speedboat offers the chance to enjoy snorkelling, swimming and kayaking. Lunch and soft drinks are included.
