This Classic Japan Tour is a great way to see the best of Japan in two weeks.

Begin in Tokyo with ample time to discover this captivating city and maybe add on a morning in nearby Nikko. Enjoy a full day private excursion with a local guide.

From Tokyo head to Hakone for two days, armed with a Hakone Free Pass to explore this beautiful area in the shadow of Mount Fuji.

From Hakone head to the Japanese Alps for 2 nights in the historic town of Takayama, with a day trip to Shirakawa-go included.

From Takayama catch the famous Shinkansen Bullet Train to Hiroshima for a 2 night stay on Miyajima Island in a traditional Ryokan. Visit Hiroshima's Peace Memorial Park.

Finish your Classic Japan journey in Kyoto, the cultural capital of Japan and home to many of Japan's most iconic sights. A guided day trip to Nara is included.

Enjoy a full day sightseeing in Kyoto with a guide, with plenty of free time to explore Kyoto and Osaka independently.

Day 1: Depart UK

Overnight flight from UK to Tokyo.

Day 2: Tokyo

Use your Japan Rail Pass to travel into Tokyo and make your way to your chosen hotel. (We provide details on how to validate your pass and get to your hotel).

Stay in the traditional area of Asakusa, close to many of Tokyo's most interesting attractions.

Overnight Tokyo.

Day 3: Tokyo

Full day tour of Tokyo by public transport accompanied by a local guide.

Your guide will suggest an itinerary but this can be adjusted to entirely suit your interests.

Overnight Tokyo. Breakfast included.

Day 4: Tokyo

Enjoy a day at leisure to explore Tokyo independently.

Alternatively take a day trip to Nikko or go watch Sumo wrestlers training (additional cost).

Overnight Tokyo. Breakfast included.

Day 5: Hakone

Leave Tokyo for Odawara by Bullet Train for 2 days to enjoy the Hakone Region.

Stay in a traditional Ryokan and use your provided Hakone Free Pass to explore using the variety of transport options including the cable-car with views towards Mount Fuji.

Overnight Hakone. Breakfast included. (Dinner also included in Ryokan stay).

Day 6: Hakone - Takayama

Enjoy the morning to use your Hakone Free Pass to explore this scenic region of Japan which offers plenty of chances to go walking or enjoying the views of Mount Fuji (if the clouds permit).

Transfer by Japan Rail to the Japanese Alps.

Takayama is a great base for exploring the Japanese Alps and a lovely town for strolling around and discovering the many traditional wooden buildings, shops and superb local restaurants.

Day 7: Takayama

Enjoy an excursion to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Shirakawa-go, one of the most beautiful villages in Japan and the snowiest place in the whole country.

Day 8: Miyajima

Use your Japan Rail Pass to travel by Shinkansen bullet train to Hiroshima.

Stay 2 nights in traditional Japanese accommodation on Miyajima island close to Hiroshima.

In the afternoon explore Miyajima on your own and see the most photographed shrine in Japan, the 'floating' red Tori Gate.

Day 9: Miyajima - Hiroshima

Today we suggest an excursion to Hiroshima and a visit to the Peace Park and museum at the site of the atomic explosion of 1945.

Hiroshima is easily reached by short ferry ride and train from Miyajima.

Day 10: Kyoto

Use your Japan Rail Pass to travel by Shinkansen bullet train to Kyoto.

The rest of the day is free at leisure in Kyoto to explore some of the wonders of the most cultural of Japan's cities.

A walk through the bamboo walkways at Arashiyama is highly recommended.

Day 11: Kyoto

Today explore the former imperial capital with a local guide, utilizing Kyoto’s comprehensive bus system to visit some of Kyoto’s World Heritage Sites.

Visit Kinkakuji Temple (the Golden Pavilion), which was originally built as a retirement villa for the Shogun.

After his death it became a Buddhist Temple at his request, and is now one of Kyoto’s most famous temples.

Nijo Castle is an ornamental castle built by the founder of the Edo Shogunate as his Kyoto residence and is surrounded by stunning gardens.

Finally take a walk down Nishiki Market, known as “Kyoto's Kitchen” and visit Kiyomizu (Pure Water) Temple.

From the 13-metre-high veranda jutting out from the Main Hall you can enjoy amazing views of the whole of Kyoto.

Day 12: Kyoto - Nara

Begin the day with a transfer from your hotel to Nara by train (45 mins) with a local guide. For 74 years during the 8th century, Nara was Japan’s capital and many of the temples and shrines built at that time remain.

Visit Todaiji Temple, the world’s largest wooden building and home to Japan’s largest Buddha.

Next stop is Nara’s most celebrated shrine, Kasuga Taisha, famous for its hundreds of bronze and stone lanterns which have been donated by worshipers.

Take a wander through Nara Park, home to more than 1,000 tame deer.

On your return from Nara, visit Fushimi Inari Shrine, used in the movie “Memoirs of a Geisha”.

The shrine is famous for housing over 10,000 red torii gates, which form a path up the mountain behind the temple.

Day 13: Kyoto - Osaka

Enjoy the morning at leisure in Kyoto for some final explorations.

In the afternoon use your Japan Rail Pass and take the bullet train to Osaka (15 mins) and explore the city independently in the late afternoon and early evening.

We suggest a visit to the lively Dotonburi district in the evening, when the neon city-scape is at its best.

Return to Kyoto after dinner out in Osaka.

Day 14: Osaka - UK

Travel to the airport for your flight back to the UK, arriving the same day or the the following day depending on schedules.
