Malaysia Self Drive Holiday

Malaysia is a fantastic destination for Self Drive Holidays and car rental in Malaysia is a very popular option.

Driving is on the left, signs are in English, roads are generally very good and the driving is a high standard in comparison to most of Asia.

Moreover, Malaysia has a great driving route which usually means heading north from Kuala Lumpur to the Cameron Highlands or Taman Negara National Park (or both) before hitting the West Coast and driving up to Penang.

This 7 night Malaysia self-drive holiday begins with 3 nights in Kuala Lumpur with a half day Kuala Lumpur City Tour and a Full Day Private Day Tour to Malacca.

From Kuala Lumpur pick up your rental car and drive into the Cameron Highlands which is a pleasure to drive.

Two nights in the Cameron Highlands is ample time to explore before heading down to the West Coast and up to Penang.

Penang is easily explored by car (once out of Georgetown's dreadful one way system).

As with all of our Malaysia holidays, this one can be amended to suit you, so just let us know your preferences.

Roads in Malaysia

All of our Self-Drive Malaysia Holidays include GPS, unless you request it not to be included.

A self-drive Malaysia holiday has a natural route north from Kuala Lumpur thorugh the Cameron Highlands and up the West Coast to Penang.

From Penang there is a jungle highway across the peninsula to the East Coast along which a main road heads back south and eventually on to Kuala Lumpur, with an option to stop at Taman Negara National Park.

It is possible to start a self drive Malaysia holiday from Singapore, but the car would need to be collected from Johor Bahru which is just across the border from Singapore. We can make all arrangements for you.

Kuala Lumpur

Kuala Lumpur (or “K.L.” as it is commonly known) is Malaysia’s vibrant and pleasant capital city, an ideal stopover for shopping, dining and a day or two’s sightseeing.

Sights in Kuala Lumpur include the impressive Petronas Twin Towers, the Hindu shrines at the Batu Caves, attractive Moorish style colonial buildings and some lively local areas.

Kuala Lumpur is known as the “Garden City” and offers a pleasant stopover en-route to Malaysian beach resorts in Langkawi, Penang or Borneo.

With a strong British, Dutch and Portuguese influence, a heady air of faded colonial grandeur hangs over this strategic town on the Strait of Malacca.

The unique Peranakan culture is very prevalent here, a mix of Chinese and local Malay, most readily experienced through the excellent local cuisine.

The Majestic Malacca is a wonderful excuse to add Malacca to any Malaysian holiday.

Kuala Lumpur International Airport is only 45 minutes away, making Malacca just as easy to get to as Kuala Lumpur itself.

Cameron Highlands

A colonial feel pervades the Cameron Highlands, with timbered buildings more reminiscent of the Cotswolds than Malaysia.

Visitors to the Cameron Highlands today come for the lush landscapes, forest walks, colonial ambience, or to visit the villages of the indiginous Orang Asli.

The Cameron Highlands are easily reached by road from Kuala Lumpur and make an interesting midway point for those heading north to Penang.

A stay at the Cameron Highlands Resort is highly recommended.

Historic Penang offers a compelling mix of heritage, dining and nightlife with a well preserved Straits Chinese heritage reflected in the shop-houses and temples of the island’s capital Georgetown.

The second largest city in Malaysia, Penang is an essential stop on any tailor made or self-drive tour of Malaysia or as a base for touring the island which has plenty of attractions for the whole family.

Penang beach resort hotels can be a little dated (with the exception of Shangri La and Lone Pine Resorts), but there are a number of excellent luxury and boutique hotels in the capital Georgetown.
