This Tanzania family safari holiday offers a superb experience of Tanzania’s very best game viewing areas.

The Northern Parks of Tanzania, offer incredible wildlife, diverse and spectacular landscapes as well as some cultural experiences in the traditional homelands of the Maasai people.

As a family travelling together, this privately driven and guided overland 4x4 safari is the perfect way to experience Tanzania, with the extra space, privacy and flexibility to travel at your own pace each day when on safari.

This area of Tanzania also offers the best time of year climatically and for game viewing during the school holiday seasons of August, October Half term and Christmas and New Year.

The best parks to explore at this time of year are the Tarangire National Park, Lake Manyara National Park, the Ngorongoro Crater and of course the Serengeti National Park.

We recommend a mix of lodges and authentic luxury tented camps that cater well to families. Furthermore we look to use camps with specially designed safari tents that can sleep up to four, offering a greater feeling of security for families.

Following your safari, head to the island of Zanzibar where you can relax at a beach hotel or lodge or resort of your choice.

There are a handful of great smaller hotels for families in Zanzibar and we are able to recommend these to fit your budget and requirements.

At a glance

  • 1 night Arusha
  • 2 nights Tarangire National Park
  • 1 night Lake Manyara National Park
  • 1 night Ngorongoro Crater
  • 2 nights Serengeti
  • 7 nights Zanzibar
  • Full Board on Safari
  • Board basis varies in Zanzibar
  • Game activities on Safari

Day 1: Fly UK to Tanzania

Overnight flight from UK to Kilimanjaro.

Day 2: Arusha

On arrival in Kilimanjaro you will be met and transferred by your safari guide to Arusha, where you will overnight.

A great choice for Families in Arusha is Ahadi Lodge, which offers adjoining rooms which are ideal for families.

Overnight Arusha. Breakfast and dinner included.

Day 3: Tarangire National Park

Your guide will collect you after breakfast in your own 4x4 open roof top vehicle.

Head out to the Tarangire National Park, famous for the large numbers of elephants it attracts during the dry season.

Spend the day exploring the park. We recommend Ndovu Tented Camp as a great option for family accommodation in Tarangire as they offer great family tents.

Overnight Tarangire. All meals & game activities included.

Day 4: Tarangire National Park

The Tarangire National Park is famous for its spectacular landscape, general wildlife, but primarily for its large herds of elephant which migrate into the parks wetlands during the dry season.

Spend the day exploring the park, with a picnic lunch in the park.

Overnight Tarangire. All meals & game activities included.

Day 5: Lake Manyara National Park

After breakfast head to Lake Manyara National Park and spend 3-5 hours in the park before continuing up the Great African Rift Escarpment to the town of Karatu, which lies at the entrance to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.

Lake Manyara National Park is a scenic park at the foot of the Rift Escarpment, with a much denser and richer landscape than most of the other game parks in northern Tanzania. Lake Manyara National Park is renowned for its elephants and its tree-climbing lions.

A good idea is to head to your accommodation after lunchtime to arrive mid-afternoon, allowing time to relax around the lodge and have a break from the safari vehicle.

We highly recommend the family rooms at Endoro Lodge as a great family option in Lake Manyara.

Overnight Lake Manyara National Park. All meals and game activities included.

Day 6: The Ngorongoro Crater

After an early breakfast depart for the Ngorongoro Crater for your day safari in the Crater floor.

The Ngorongoro Crater is one of the natural wonders of Africa and is home to some incredible wildlife, including the rare and endangered Black Rhino.

Ngorongoro permits are valid for a maximum of 6 hours in the crater floor, which is enough time to traverse the Crater floor and enjoy a picnic lunch.

We recommend Ngorongoro Farmhouse as a great option for families in Ngorongoro.

Overnight Ngorongoro. All meals & game drive included.

Day 7: The Serengeti National Park

This morning depart early for the drive to the Serengeti.

En-route, a great stop is at Olduvai Gorge & the Museum of Mankind. This is an area of great historical significance and also has a local Maasai market that offers an insight into the Maasai lifestyle.

Continue to the Central Serengeti, home to some of the largest prides of lions and good numbers of cheetah, leopard and other predators.

We recommend Naona Moru Camp as a great family option in the Central Serengeti as they have very good family tents.

Overnight Serengeti. All meals and game activities included.

Day 8: The Serengeti National Park

Spend the day exploring the Serengeti, before returning to camp at the end of the day.

Overnight Serengeti. All meals and game activities included.

Day 9: Zanzibar

After a short morning game drive and breakfast your guide will drive you to the local airstrip where you will board your scenic flight to Zanzibar.

On arrival you will be met and transferred by private vehicle to your chosen family friendly hotel in Zanzibar.

We recommend Matemwe Beach Village amongst others as a great choice for families looking for a smaller family friendly hotel in Zanzibar.

Matemwe Village is a delightful and relaxed small beach lodge offering authentic Zanzibarian style accommodation and hospitality with excellent food, stunning beach and a superb dive centre on site that offers daily dive and snorkelling trips out to the beautiful Mnemba Marine Park.

Day 17: Arrive in UK

Arrive back in the UK.

Serengeti

The Serengeti is hailed by many as the best safari holiday destination in Africa. A Serengeti safari offers a chance above all to see the spectacular wildebeest migration as well as outstanding game viewing including the Big 5.

'Serengeti' means 'endless plains' in Maasai and the landscape is vast and beautiful with wide open plains dissected by some notable rivers and dotted with dramatic granite kopjes.

Safari Camps in the Serengeti range from old style traditional luxury mobile safari camps to permanent safari camps.

A Serengeti safari needs to be planned carefully according to the migration season and the style of safari to suit.

Lake Manyara National Park

Lake Manyara National Park is a gorgeous little park which sits at the foot of the Great African Rift Escarpment.

This park offers lush vegetation and became rather well-known for its tree climbing Lions and for it's large elephant population.

Lake Manyara National Park is very scenic and diverse and Lake Manyara itself was descibed by Hemingway as 'the loveliest lake in Africa'.

Lake Manyara may not have the more extensive game viewing of the Serengeti or the stunning setting of Ngorongoro, but if time permits, a night or two at Lake Manyara, especially in one the more remote lodges is a worthy addition to a northern Tanzania safari.

Ngorongoro Crater

The Ngorongoro Crater is without doubt one of the most spectacular natural attractions in Africa and one of the continents best game viewing destinations.

The Ngorongoro Crater is part of the Ngorongoro Conservation area, which also includes the surrounding Ngorongoro Highlands as well as part of the southern Serengeti.

The Ngorongoro Crater is the largest intact collapsed volcanic caldera in the world and acts as a self-contained eco-system rich in game, attracted by the mineral rich grasses and permanent water sources.

A night or two in one of the lodges on the crater rim is an unforgettable way of experiencing Ngorongoro.

Tarangire National Park

Gently undulating and densely vegetated Tarangire National Park forms part of Tanzania’s northern safari circuit and is the least visited of the northern parks.

The Tarangire River runs through the heart of the park, which is easily accessible from Lake Manyara. The park is famous for high concentration of lion and for the large baobab trees.

The northern area of the park is busiest whilst the southern, swampier area retains a real wilderness feel. June to October is the optimum game-viewing season in Tarangire as the animals have returned from the northern Serengeti by this time.

Tanzania Family Holidays

Tanzania can be divided into Northern and Southern based safari areas.

The North of Tanzania, where the game parks are collectively known as 'the Northern Cicuit', offers a more adventurous safari in a privately driven/guided vehicle showcasing the iconic Serengeti and Tarangire National parks, perfect for a week long family safari.

For shorter safaris, as a taster for a family safari holiday to Tanzania, the incredible Selous Game Reserve is perfect for a 3-4 night safari.

Combining a family safari in Tanzania with some time on the beaches of Zanzibar or Mafia, or even the Seychelles makes this one of the very best safari and beach family holiday destinations.

Zanzibar not only offers fantastic white sand beaches but also great snorkelling and diving options as well as the chance to experience a completely different culture.

A Tanzania family safari holiday can offer very good value for money as well, especially in comparison to some of the other well known safari destinations in Southern Africa.

Family Safari Holidays

A family safari holiday can truly be one of those great family experiences which can open the eyes of children of any age.

A Tanzania family safari can be a brilliant bringing together of a family on a holiday which can include some great adventures:

  • Seeing & discovering amazing wildlife
  • Game drives in open topped game vehicles
  • Hearing lions roar at night
  • Looking for animal tracks
  • Flying in small safari planes
  • Experiencing new landscapes
  • Camping (in luxury) out in the bush
  • Sitting around the campfire at night
  • New cultural experiences
  • Snorkelling with dolphins in Zanzibar

Planning your Tanzania family holiday

A safari in Tanzania can offer a huge learning experience for children and also a chance to see how lives are lived in other parts of the world.

There are some key ingredients which need to be considered when planning a family safari holiday to Tanzania:

  • Ages and interests of the children
  • Ease of travel to and from destination
  • The duration of time spent on safari versus other areas of interest (e.g. touring and beach)
  • Specialist interests of any family members
  • Time of year you wish to travel on safari
  • Vaccinations or malaria precautions
  • Budget

Those are some of the factors we take into account when planning your Tanzania family safari.

Several of our team are parents, and as such we understand the importance of getting the trip balance just right.

When planning your family holiday we can go over these pointers so we can tailor a trip for you which suits your personal interests and requirements.

Child ages

Bear in mind that Tanzania is a malaria-risk country and for that reason alone, the destination isn't really suitable for toddlers.

Child policies vary from camp to camp, although many of the more remote bush style camps don't accept younger children because of the open nature of the camps and the risks from wildlife.

We are able to recommend camps and lodges suitable for your ages of children and your previous experiences, if any, of family safari holidays.
