Mahale Mountains National Park borders Lake Tanganyika and is home to some of the last remaining wild chimpanzees in Africa.
Tracking the chimps in Mahale is one of the best wildlife experiences in Tanzania. Around 900 chimpanzees reside here and are habituated to visitors.
The best time to track chimps in Mahale is between May and October when larger groups of chimps are likely to be seen
The park can be visited at any time of year however, and lightning storms over Tanganyika can be a spectacular sight. Lake activities include dhow trips and kayaking.
Accommodation in this remote corner of Tanzania is limited. We recommend a stay at Greystoke Mahale, a Nomad Camp with very high standards.
