Elephant Hills
Elephant Hills
Khao Sok National Park is one of Southern Thailand’s most beautiful areas. A protected National Park with some of the oldest rainforest in the world, jungle clad limestone peaks, meandering rivers and picturesque lakes, Khao Sok is a nature lovers paradise.
Elephant Hills is a luxury tented-camp with a main camp on the edge of the park and an over-water camp in a stunning lake setting.
Accommodation consists of luxury ‘tents’ modeled on the luxury African game safari camps.
Activities at elephant Hills include the highly popular elephant experience, which includes washing and feeding the elephants.
Canoeing, trekking and sailing across the lake on a traditional Burmese Junk are also offered in a choice of 2, 3 and 4 night packages.
A stay at Elephant Hills can easily be combined with a stay in one of southern Thailands beach destinations such as Phuket, Khao Lak, Koh Samui or Krabi as transfers are included as part of the package.
The activities at Elephant Hills are all in the 'soft' adventure category. The jungle trekking by the Lake Camp is a bit more strenuous, with some fairly steep sections which can make this unsuitable for the elderly or infirm. It can be slippery when wet, so solid walking footwear is required.
What's so Special?
Elephant Hills is a superb addition to any holiday to Thailand - the location is simply stunning, the activities well organised and the accommodation of a very high standard.
Bear in Mind
Whe we first went to Elephant Hills 10 years ago they were still offering elephant riding. Things have changed with the times though and the elephant experience offered at Elephant Hills does not include riding which is altogether better for the elephants welfare.
Elephant Hills gets booked up very early and we strongly recommend advance planning in order not to miss out.
Elephant Hills Main Camp
Situated right on the border of the rainforest of Khao Sok National Park, Elephant Hills Main Camp offers luxury tailor-made tents set in the largest protected area of rainforest in Southern Thailand.
Each tent features comfortable solid beds, fan, tea and coffee making facilities and a luxurious bathroom with Western style toilet, hairdryer and hot and cold shower.
The furniture is handmade using natural materials and provides all the comfort you would normally find in a hotel room.
The tents have ample space, are well protected against mosquitos and other possible intruders, offer plenty of lighting and are the perfect place to reflect on the day’s observations and activities.
A night at Elephant Hills is a unique experience, the temperatures drop and the campfire creates a romantic and warm atmosphere in which to share travel tales as the rainforest its inhabitants form an exciting concert.
The main area at The Elephant Camp consists of the reception, a semi-open-air restaurant, a well-stocked bar, a small souvenir shop, a fireplace, maps, newspapers and info boards as well as a swimming pool with superb view of the spectacular limestone cliff backdrop.
It even offers free Wi-Fi to share all your pictures and experiences with the rest of the world while sipping ice-cold beer or a freshly prepared Piña colada.
Furthermore you will find a local herb garden with plants like pineapple, papaya, peppers, galangal, chilies and much more.
Fish can be fed in our little fish pond or you may head to the Sok River with all its wild fish just behind the camp.
Rainforest Camp
Elephant Hills Rainforest Camp is the little sister of The Elephant Camp and situated in the centre of Cheow Larn Lake in Khao Sok National Park.
Rainforest Camp, one of the only floating tented camps in the world, is located on one of Thailand’s most spectacular lakes surrounded by rainforest and towering limestone mountains.
20 Luxury Safari Tents with en-suite bathrooms provide an intimate base for you to explore Southern Thailand’s tropical rainforest.
Powered by both wind and solar energy and using responsible waste management, Rainforest Camp is designed to be at one with nature.
This has to be the most unique and responsible way to experience the true beauty of Southern Thailand’s endangered Rainforest habitat, home to wild Elephants, Hornbills, rare Asian Oxen (gaurs), various monkey species, a myriad of reptiles, amphibians and floral species.
Khao Sok is home to threatened and endangered animal species, experts estimate the biodiversity to be higher than in the Amazon basin.
Its conservation is vital for the ecological balance of Southern Thailand.
Adding to the already successful and unique soft adventure nature tours Cheow Larn lake is a must see for all nature lovers.
Relax in front of your tent, take a swim in the emerald waters of Cheow Larn Lake, kayak through its klongs and channels in search of monkeys and birds and trek through the rainforest before watching the sun set over the jungle.
A night at Rainforest Camp is certainly one you will not forget too soon.

Elephant Experience
Many of the magnificent elephants at Elephant Hills were working in the logging industry until this was banned by law in 1989.
As elephants easily wolf down over 200kg of food per day, new ways of sustaining these gentle giants had to be found – most of them switching jobs to work in the tourism industry.
The Elephant Hills Elephant Experience is a unique concept which was implemented in 2010, when it was decided that elephant riding would be stopped, as carrying tourists on their back is not a natural thing elephants do.
At Elephant Hills, no elephant riding is offered; instead, a much more interactive and respectful option to encounter elephants is offered.
Guests have the chance to experience an interactive adventure which beats any elephant ride you might have participated in before.
As part of each tour package, guests get up close with the elephants.
Watch them enjoy an extensive bath in the big elephant mud pool, and then use coconut fibers to scrub these gentle giants clean again, before preparing and feeding them one of their daily meals.
After the experience, the elephants are released back into their large free roaming pen, where guests can watch them play, interact and graze in their natural environment.
