Assam

Famous for its tea and for silk production, Assam is one of India's least visited states, with far fewer people venturing to explore this fascinating area of North Eastern India.

The lack of visitors is a shame as Assam has some great attractions, not least of which is the mighty Brahmaputra River. Less well known than the Ganges, the Brahmaputra is one of Asia's major rivers and flows right through Assam into Bangladesh and down to the Bay of Bengal.

Assam is also an excellent wildlife destination and Kaziranga National Park is home to tigers, elephant and the one-horned Indian rhino which has been saved from the brink of extinction in Assam.

Kaziranga National Park

One of India's best wildlife destinations, Kaziranga National Park covers about 430 sq. km, bordered on the north by the Brahmaputra River and on the south by the Karbi Anglong hills.

The largest number of one-horned rhinoceros in the world roams Kaziranga's swamps, grasslands with tall thickets of elephant grass and areas of mixed deciduous and tropical semi-evergreen forest.

Kaziranga is home to a wide variety of other animals and birds, and the open vistas make it relatively easy to see many species of wildlife in a single day.

Fauna

As well as the Indian rhino, Kaziaranga National Park is home to 35 species of mammal, including tiger, wild elephant, small population of hoolock gibbon, capped langur, bristly hare, hog badger, otter, leopard, wild boar, sambar, swamp deer, hog deer, muntjac, water buffalo and gaur.

Among the rich birdlife in Kaziranga are the rare greater adjutant stork, Bengal florican, black-necked stork, lesser adjutant stork, Pallas's fish eagle, swamp partridge, grey peacock-pheasant, great pied hornbill, green imperial pigeon, babblers and thousands of migratory birds, seasonally attracted to the various water areas of the park from as far away as Siberia.
