Day 3: Kuching - Bako National Park

Just 35 minutes from Kuching, the coastal Bako National Park is one of the most interesting National Parks in Borneo and one of the best places in Borneo to see wildlife in a natural setting.

Depart the hotel around 8:30 am for the 35-minute drive to Bako Village. From the village, it’s a 25-minute boat ride (depending on the tide) to the National Park, which is situated on a peninsula.

The various types of animals commonly spotted at Bako include proboscis monkeys, silver leaf monkeys, long-tailed macaques, wild boars, monitor lizards and numerous species of birds.

Forest types range from mangrove to kerangas (heath forest), tropical swamp vegetation, cliff vegetation and beach vegetation.

There are several interesting boardwalk trails to follow inside the park, depending on level of fitness and interest and the park’s coastline is dotted with small bays, coves and beaches.

Return to Kuching by mid-afternoon.

Overnight Kuching. Breakfast & Lunch included.

Day 4: Kuching - Nanga Sumpa

Pick up from your hotel in Kuching around 8:30 a.m and drive to Batang Ai reservoir (4½ hours).

Journey overland through rural Sarawak, passing through pepper gardens, cocoa and rubber plantations. Enroute, a few stops will be made.

Visit the colourful native market in Serian town where a variety of jungle produce such as edible ferns, bamboo shoots and unusual tropical fruit are on display.

Visit a pepper garden and stop by to view wild orchids and several species of pitcher plants.

Lunch is taken en-route. On arrival at the Batang Ai reservoir, proceed by longboat (1½ hours) upriver to Nanga Sumpa.

Settle in at the lodge. After dinner visit Nanga Sumpa longhouse. Relax on the Ruai (common veranda) and spend time with the Iban people.

Interact with the community; learn about their culture and enjoy some local rice wine.

Overnight stay at Nanga Sumpa Lodge. Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner included.

Day 5: Nanga Sumpua - Enseluai - Nanga Sumpa

Following breakfast hike the jungle trails along the river before continuing upriver by longboat. Our destination is the scenic Enseluai waterfall.

Along the way (if conditions are suitable) your boatman may stop to demonstrate fishing Iban-style using a 'jala' or throw net.

Arrive at the waterfall and have time to relax, swim and enjoy the rainforest surroundings.

Enjoy a riverside BBQ lunch prepared by your Iban hosts before returning to the lodge.

Dinner is served in the lodge with local delicacies to enhance the meal.

Day 6: Nanga Sumpa - Kuching

Following breakfast, depart down river by longboat, then overland to Kuching. Have lunch en-route and drop off at your hotel in Kuching.

Overnight Kuching. Breakfast & Lunch included.

Day 7: Kuching - Semanggoh Orangutan Sanctuary

The Semenggoh orangutan rehabilitation centre is 24 km from Kuching and trains orphaned or rescued orangutans how to survive in the wild.

Over 20 orangutans live in forest within the nature reserve and often return to the centre at feeding times.

Depart your hotel at around 8:15 am. On arrival at Semanggoh, head to the briefing area for an introductory talk about the Rehabilitation Centre.

After a brief talk from the rangers, take a short walk along a trail to the feeding area to watch the orangutans come down from the trees for a free meal.

This tour to Semenggoh is arranged to coincide with the morning orangutan feeding time, which takes place between 9 and 9:30 am.

Although it is very likely that orangutans will be seen, they are in a semi-wild environment, so sightings cannot be guaranteed.

Return to the hotel with the afternoon to explore Kuching independently as there are plenty of other things to see and do in and around Kuching.

Overnight Kuching. Breakfast included.

Day 8: Kuching - Mulu National Park

Transfer to the airport for the flight to Mulu National Park.

On arrival at Mulu Airport transfer to the Marriott Royal Mulu Resort.

In the afternoon, transfer to Mulu Park HQ and take the 3km plank walk to explore Lang’s and Deer Caves.

Watch the bats flights if weather permits and return to the Park HQ and transfer to your accommodation.

In the morning, proceed by longboat upriver to Wind Cave with its impressive ‘King’s Chamber’.

Here, stalactites and stalagmites with delicate lace-like patterns are found.

A short walk along a plankwalk next to the limestone cliff followed by a climb up approximately 250 concrete steps and you arrive at the entrance to Clearwater Cave.

Like most caves in Mulu, Clearwater Cave provides a habitat for unique species of plants. One of these, the one-leafed plant can only be found at Mulu.

Photo-sensitive algae grow on certain rocks and produce needle-like formations that point towards the source of light.

Near Clearwater Cave there is a wonderful swimming area shaded by giant rainforest trees.

Day 18: UK

Nanga Sumpah Longhouse

About 1.5 hours by boat from Batang Ai, Nanga Sumpa Lodge offers clean rooms with western-style toilets, mosquito netting, mattresses and clean bedding.

The lodge has 18 rooms with raised sleeping platforms. The majority of the rooms accommodate 2 people. There are two larger rooms that are suitable for families and can accommodate 2 adults and 2 children.

The lodge has flush toilets and showers and piped water supply. A generator runs from 6.30 pm to 10.30 pm. After 10.30 pm traditional oil lamps are used to light the lodge. Meals are prepared in the lodge and feature fresh jungle vegetables and other local delicacies.

Nanga Sumpa is a jungle lodge located in a relatively remote area of Borneo. The facilities reflect the remote location and are somewhat basic. Many of our guests don’t mind this as the beauty of the area and the Iban people are the real attractions.

If you are looking for a bit more luxury the Batang Ai Longhouse Resort by Hilton offers hotel standard facilities and air-conditioned rooms.

Orangutan live in the Ulu Ai area and sometimes it is possible to see the “man of the forest” in its natural environment.

Kinabatangan Riverside Lodge

The accommodation in Sukau is comfortable but not luxurious.

We think it is in keeping with the location and the Kinabatangan Riverside Lodge is a much better option than other lodges such as Sukau River Lodge.

Rooms are all en-suite with ceiling fans and hot showers.

There is a wildlife trail by the lodge along which birdlife, red-leaf monkeys and sometimes orangutans are spotted.

Tabin Wildlife Resort

The charming timber bungalows of Tabin Wildlife Resort come complete with private balcony and hot water shower, a real luxury in the forest.

A variety of birds, insects and even small mammals can be sighted quite easily within the resort which is set amongst the rainforest alongside the Lipad River.

Wildlife

Please note that as all the animals are in a wild natural habitat there is no 100% guarantee of seeing them.

It is almost guaranteed to see orangutans at Sepilok however as the are adapted to come out of the forest at feeding times during their rehabilitation.

Other wildlife such as elephants are less common but are still frequently spotted, especially around Abai.

Proboscis Monkeys are plentiful in Bako National Park and along the Kinabatangan River.

Your guide on the river cruises in Kinabatangan is likely to spot snakes curled up in the trees by the river or crocodiles lazing on the banks.

Hornbills are common and you would be unlucky not to see some and they are a magnificent sight, especially in flight over the canopy of trees.

When visiting Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary please take note of the park guides.

Orangutans are curious by nature and don't think twice about waltzing off with unguarded items.

Especially - don't take food into the park with you.

Note that the cruises along the river from Sukau are in electric boats.
