Tugu Malang is a boutique hotel in the heart of the old town of Malang, looking out to the main monument of Indonesia’s struggle for independence and a beautiful lotus pond park.

Hotel Tugu Malang was the first of the several Tugu Hotels in Indonesia, built and designed by the founder to house the largest antique collection in Indonesia.

Hotel Tugu Malang is a sight in itself. Hundreds and hundreds of antiques tastefully adorn every corner of the hotel, walking guests through the heritages of the Dutch colonial era, the gradual fusion of the Indonesian and the Chinese cultures over many centuries as well as the humble beauty of traditional Indonesian masterpieces.

Each of the 49 rooms and suites is designed with individual and unique character; some have been dedicated as tributes to Indonesian art heroes of the past.

We recommend a stay in one of Tugu's Suites for a more evocative experience of old Java.

Tugu has the only restaurant in Malang that features a classic, romantic old Malang atmosphere. Melati Restaurant is famous for its original Indonesian homecooking old recipes and its Chinese Peranakan menu.

Tugu has has the best homemade bakery in East Java.

What's so Special?

Tugu Malang houses a vast, priceless collection of antiques influenced by the Javanese Babah Peranakan (the hundreds-years-old mixed culture between the Chinese migrants in Java and the native Javanese).

Tugu Malang is more than just a hotel; it has become most indigenous, most essential in experiencing the beautiful richness of the history of Java.

Bear in Mind

Malang, a cool-weather town once dubbed ‘the Paris of Southeast Asia’, 800 meters above the sea level is surrounded by lush rolling green hills of apple, tea, coffee plantations, waterfalls and tropical forests.

It was once the town where all the Dutch plantation masters retired in beautiful colonial houses. It is a perfect base for visiting the majestic volcano Mount Bromo, and is surrounded by Hindu temples ruins from centuries-old kingdoms.

The train station is only 2 minutes from Hotel Tugu Malang and the airport a 30-minute transfer away.

Superior Deluxe Rooms

The Superior Deluxe room are located on all 3 floors, some overlook the old town’s beautiful lily pond and the Tugu monument on the main city square, while some others open to lush tropical greens through private balconies.

All superior deluxe rooms feature handcrafted bathtubs; flat screen TVs, DVD players, a complete Java coffee amenities, coffee & tea making facility, welcome relaxation foot and shoulder massage.

Executive Suites

The Executive Suites are located on all floors. Some of the Executive Suites are overlooking the huge water lily pond and the Tugu city monument, while some others open to lush tropical greens through their private balconies.

The Executive Suites feature additional sitting area with sofa and armchairs, with oversized handcrafted tubs in the bathrooms. some of them are sub-categorized as Malang Tempoe Doeloe Suites for their nostalgic “Malang in the Old Dutch colonial times” atmosphere.

The Zamrud of East Java Suite

The Zamrud Suite features the traditional beauty of East Java. The five Zamrud Suites are differentiated by interior layouts, colorus, decors, elegant antique beds, and curios.

Albeit designed with a strong traditional East Java atmosphere, the Zamrud Suites and the Babah Suite are well equipped with modern luxuries.

Babah Suite

The Babah Suite portrays the life of the Peranakan or “Nonya Baba” society in Malang around the 1850s.

The original Nonya Baba culture began when young men left mainland China in search for more prosperous lives in Southeast Asia, a tradition that began more than four centuries ago.

These young married local girls in the islands where these men then settled.

Through the years, a new culture was gradually formed by these mixed marriages: a product of a fusion between the local cultures, Chinese culture, as well as the influence from the West, with the Chinese culture commonly being the most dominant influence.

In the 1950s, the peranakan lifestyle gradually became harder to find, as more and more old houses were demolished and the contents of these houses were dispersed.

Melati Restaurant

Tugu has the only restaurant in Malang that features a classic, romantic old Malang atmosphere.

Melati Restaurant is famous for its original Indonesian homecooking old recipes and its Chinese Peranakan menu.

Roti Tugu

Roti Tugu is known as the best homemade bakery in East Java, with the largest bread and cake selection in town.

All the products of Roti Tugu are baked fresh several times daily, with absolutely no use of preservatives.

Other than its bread and cake products, Roti Tugu also serves Malang traditional delicacies, ice cream and steaks of the Dutch Colonial times.

Tugu Tea House

This cozy nostalgic Javanese lounge on the second floor has indoor and outdoor seating areas, offering a romantic view of Malang’s old town square.

Tugu Tea House is a popular meeting point, especially between 4 and 6 PM, where guests gather for afternoon tea (complimentary for in-house guests).

A traditional Javanese stall features a variety of traditional snacks and cakes as well as fresh local teas, coffees or herbal drinks.

Apsara Spa

The atmosphere of the Apsara Spa is inspired by the romantic tales of the relationship between Indonesia and Cambodia hundreds of years back, whereas the treatments are inspired by the serene, heavenly beauty of the Apsara goddess dancers (see explanation of Apsaras under the Apsara Suite above).

The Apsara Spa is an oasis of peace secluded from the outer world that pays tribute to centuries-old beauty & wellness traditions & practices in Java.

One of the various signature treatments at the Apsara Spa is an indulging massage that combines the dance performed by the Apsara dancers (Yin), and a stronger deep tissue massage (Yang) from ancient Java.

We strongly recommend the ‘Day Dream in Angkor’: a thorough 4-hour, romantic treatment for two that uses various natural exotic herbs, traditional spices and local exotic flowers, including a complete aromatherapy which historically could only be performed exclusively for the main royal family.

This romantic treatment can also include a private gourmet dinner or lunch at the Tirta Gangga Dining Room.
