Munduk Moding Coffee Plantation is an affordable luxury retreat in the hills of North Bali and will appeal to those looking to include an off the beaten track luxury retreat as part of a holiday or honeymoon in Bali.

Just 5 Villas and 5 Suites are hidden away between the lush vegetation in a coffee plantation surrounded by jungle.

Designed by award winning Balinese architect, Popo Danes, the villas and suites at Munduk Moding Plantation marry key features of Balinese architecture with a modernist tradition.

As well as being an ideal spot to escape and chill, Munduk Moding also offers plenty of activities and opportunities to get active and discover Balinese culture.

Visit the small plantations, historical villages and towns of the area and explore cultures barely touched by tourism. Trekking and horse riding in this area of North Bali are also popular.

In addition, a shuttle service operates twice daily to Munduk, the lake area (Buyan and Tamblingan) and Bedugul, allowing exploration of these areas.

Alternatively just enjoy the spectacular views from the comfort of your villa, the spa or the pool deck.

Munduk Moding serves up great cuisine, based largely on organic produce grown locally or in the plantations’ own gardens.

Munduk Moding Plantation is a coffee plantation, but there is also a forest area, with bamboo and lotus ponds. The hotel offers a guided tour daily and a detailed map allowing guests to explore Munduk Moding Plantation independently. Cultural activities are also at the centre of the experience.

There are several hills on Munduk Moding Plantation with great views – perfect for relaxing and enjoying a book from the library in one of the Bale Bengongs (Gazebos) spread out over the plantation.

What’s so Special?

We think a stay at Munduk Moding is best combined with a stay in a beach resort in Bali or a tailor made tour of Bali.

This is Bali truly off the beaten track in an area of Bali that hardly sees any tourists.

Munduk Moding operates on a sustainable basis in co-operation with the local community, several of whom are employed by the plantation.

The spa is a highlight. Set back somewhat from the villas in the middle of a particularly beautiful segment of coffee trees, the spa is surrounded by coffee plantation and jungle - a privileged place to experience the secular secrets of Balinese wellbeing.

Nature lovers will feel at home here and birdlife is prolific (borrow binoculars and a field guide from reception).

Birds commonly spotted include swallows, singing bush larks, kingfisher, red jungle fowl, pink-necked pigeons, plaintive cuckoos and spider hunters.

Bear in mind

Munduk Moding Plantation is quite high up in the hills of Bali and it can be cool in the evenings – campfire cool. A campfire is lit every evening – a great spot to take in the Balinese night sky and the lights of villages far below.

The eastern part of the plantation is accessible by locals – so you may bump into the odd friendly farmer crossing the fields – it’s that kind of place.

Villas

The villas boast superb views of the rolling hills down to the sea, overlooking rice fields and jungle in the distance. In the evening the view is of the sun setting in the Java Sea.

The villas are very spacious (55 sq. m.) with tropical hardwood (Merbau) parquet floors in the bed and living room and Sulawesi cream marble in the bathroom.

King-size four-poster beds, couches made from tropical hardwood, high quality cotton and linen and local artworks work together to produce a warm interior.

Huge glass panel doors provide unparalleled views in all directions. All villas have private terraces.

A large hand finished terrazzo bathtub invites for soaking one’s limbs in mellow mountain water, which can be filled with essential flagrances (provided upon request).

An indoor shower with sinks for him and for her completes the indoor bathroom. An outdoor shower in a private garden filled with flowers is a nice addition.

Sky Suites and Garden Suites

Munduk Moding Plantation has two Sky Suites, located on the second floor of the main building, overlooking the swimming pool and the Bali Sea.

The Sky Suites are an excellent option for a family or a group of up to six friends since they come with a huge private terrace with panoramic views of the hills and the Bali Sea.

The basic materials are the same as in the villas: hardwood Merbau floors and Sulawesi cream marble in the bathroom.

The Sky Suites also boast a hand polished terrazzo bathtub. Both are en-suite.

The first Sky Suite is a cosy 25 sq. m. with twin beds, handcrafted local furniture and designs made from local materials as well as tropical hard wood.

The second sky suite is similar to the first but, in addition, offers a sizeable study room with a reading and TV watching area. This second room can be closed by sliding doors and transformed in a second bedroom.

Garden Suites

Munduk Moding Plantation also offers three Garden Suites. These are located in a separate building which itself is situated in the coffee plantation with views of the surrounding greenery and the rolling hill down to the sea.

Both suites are very private - through insulation and landscaping. The Garden Suites all have private and semi covered terraces with lovely views.

The bedrooms in the suites have Merbau parquet floors, huge windows and glass sliding doors and four-poster beds and are decorated with local artworks inspired by nature.

The en-suite bathroom echoes the natural theme by combining Sulawesi cream marble floors with natural stone and indigenous plants. Washbasins are supported by an old coffee tree while a skylight floods the shower and terrazzo bath-tube with natural light.

The Mimpi Restaurant

The MiMPi (Balinese for "dream") Restaurant enjoys a magical setting, with great views of the Bali Sea and the central mountains. Natural materials dominate the interior and tables are set well apart to maximise privacy.

Dine on the terrace under the frangipani trees next to the swimming pool or in a private Bale Bengong (gazebo).

MiMPi is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner and serves Indonesian, Asian and Fusion dishes using homegrown vegetables and fruit where possible.

In the evening an organic menu is offered alongside an a-la-carte menu.

More generally, the chef is very happy to prepare anything to suit guests. Breakfast options cover Balinese, Indonesian, American and Continental choices emphasising fresh and homegrown produce.

Munduk Moding Plantation being a coffee plantation, serves a wide variety of coffees, including the famous "kopi luak".

There’s also afternoon sweets – a different Balinese treat every afternoon.

The Spa

Set back somewhat from the villas in the middle of a particularly beautiful segment of coffee trees, the spa is surrounded by coffee plantation and the jungle.

Designed by Popo Danes and executed in tropical hardwood and marble, the spa is a privileged place to abandon your body to the secular secrets of Balinese well-being.

The sound of water is everywhere as it trickles down a rock clad wall.
