The Majestic Saigon

Opened in 1925 as Saigon’s most luxurious hotel, the Majestic Hotel Saigon has gone through several reincarnations over the years, reflecting the tumultuous history of Vietnam.

Former haunt of foreign correspondents, spies and once home to Graham Greene, the Majestic Saigon Hotel exudes history, tradition and romance.

In a great location overlooking the Saigon River, the Majestic Saigon remains a hotel of tradition, hospitality and elegance with an aura steeped in its French colonial era roots.

The Saigon Opera House, Re-unification Palace, Notre-Dame Cathedral and Ben Thanh Markets are all also just a short walk away.

The Majestic has a beautiful art-deco era lobby, with stained glass, chandeliers and period furniture. Tiny, antique lifts lead to the rooms in the Classic Wing, which has wide corridors, beautiful carpets and artworks on the wall.

Rooms at the Majestic are a good size and the Saigon River View Rooms in the Classic Wing are very popular so book well in advance for these if possible. In fact many of the room types are booked well in advance.

What's so Special?

The Majestic Saigon Hotel is the ‘Grand Dame’ of Saigon's colonial-era hotels, in an excellent location by the Saigon River with plenty of restaurants, shops and bars close by.

We love the Majestic’s rooftop bar, which has a nice view over the Saigon River and is a great spot for pre-dinner drinks. Like everything at the Majestic – it’s a little bit old fashioned but the river views are great.

We prefer the Majestic to other colonial era hotels in Saigon such as the Grand or the Rex.

Wi-Fi is free with a strong signal throughout the hotel, and no password required.

Lonely Planet described the lobby as ‘like an old lady trying to hide her wrinkles’ which we thought summed it up nicely until renovations really lifted the look of the hotel. The old lady has a twinkle in her eye again!

Bear in mind

The Majestic Saigon has its imperfections and isn’t quite luxury in many people’s eyes, nor is it a boutique hotel and the original Art Deco flourishes don't appeal to everyone.

We love the Majestic for its historic ambience. Bear in mind that ‘historic ambience’ can seem like ‘old fashioned’ to some – the Majestic is not for those looking for super modern spick and span.

The swimming pool is quite small and lacks sunlight in the afternoon, but not every hotel in Saigon has a pool.

Colonial Deluxe Room

The lead-in rooms are 33 - 37 sq. m. in size and face the city. Wooden floors, high ceilings and framed paintings make these rooms feel quite homely and spacious.

Bathrooms are spacious black and gold marble affairs with bathtubs and old-fashioned taps.

Windows are triple glazed which blocks noise from the busy city.

Colonial City Deluxe & Colonial Pool Deluxe

These rooms offer either a pool and courtyard view (Colonial Pool Deluxe) or a city view (Colonial City Deluxe) and are 35- 40 sq. m. in size. Otherwise these rooms are very similar in design to the Colonial Rooms, only slightly larger.

These room feature French windows, which open onto a small balcony.

Bathrooms are spacious black and gold marble affairs with bathtubs and sinks with retro gold tap fittings.

Colonial River Deluxe

These popular rooms in the Classic Wing of the hotel offer a view of the Saigon River and are 35- 40 sq. m in size.

Wooden floors, high ceilings, large bathrooms and antique touches (telephones and taps for instance) create a colonial era feel.

Bathrooms have bathtubs with a shower over the tub.

Features in all rooms:

  • Air Con
  • Free Wi-Fi
  • Flat screen TV with Satellite channels
  • Tea & coffee making facilities
  • Safe
  • Minibar
  • IDD Phone
  • Hairdryer
  • Umbrella
  • Weighing scales
  • Daily bottle of mineral water

Cyclo Restaurant

This historic ground floor restaurant serves International Buffet breakfast, Vietnamese Buffet lunch and Seafood Buffet dinner.

Catinat Lounge

The lobby lounge and café is a nice spot for snacks and cake amongst the art deco stained glass, chandeliers and classic columns of the Majestic’s elegant lobby. Sadly the coffee is a disaster.

Serenade Restaurant

Serenade Restaurant offers Classical surroundings and piano accompaniment on the 7th floor overlooking the river.

Breeze Sky Bar

Breeze Sky Bar offers great views over the river and all day al-fresco dining.

M Bar

On the 10th floor, this partly Al-Fresco Bar offers great views over the river and the perfect location for sunset drinks.

Facilities

The Majestic has a small swimming pool in the central courtyard, a spa and health club.

The location means that there are plenty of shops and restaurants within just a short stroll from the hotel.

Facilities:

  • Swimming pool
  • Health Club
  • Spa - Massage
  • Sauna, steam bath, Jacuzzi

Each trip is customised for you - we can amend things to entirely suit you; your budget, your pace, your interests.

You will have your own private car, driver and guide on excursions and we normally include airport transfers by private car.

On excursions you'll have an experienced English speaking guide who will be able to give you personal insights into your destination.

What are the departure dates?

Let us know your preferred dates of travel and we will find the best and most suitable flights to fit your itinerary.

We will also advise you of the best times to travel if required.

Which Airlines do you use?

We work with all the major airlines flying to this part of the world.

Typically for Vietnam, Vietnam Airlines, Thai Airways, Singapore Airlines, Emirates, Qatar Airways or Cathay Pacific would be airlines we most often use.

However, just let us know your preferred airline if you have one. We can organise flights from any regional destination in the UK.

Vietnam Airlines fly directly to both Hanoi and Saigon from Heathrow.

Which Hotels do you use?

We're careful with our choice of hotels, but we're guided by our customers also. If you have some preferred hotels, just let us know.

We specialise in boutique hotels and so we will often suggest some of our favourite smaller hotels where we think these will be suitable.

We try to choose hotels with character, value and something special about them - which fit your budget.

We keep on top of hotel developments in Indochina from our office in Vietnam and regularly inspect the hotels we use.

Do you cater for Solo Travellers and families?

Yes, we have many solo travellers, and Vietnam is a very safe, friendly and welcoming destinations for those travelling alone.

River cruises on the Mekong are a popular option for solo travellers, especially with Pandaw Cruises who offer no Single Supplements on many departures.

Vietnam has plenty to offer families, whether it's exploring the Cu Chi Tunnels, cycling around Mekong Delta villages, enjoying a Water Puppet Show in Hanoi or sampling exotic Vietnamese food.

What about Honeymoons and Anniversaries?

Vietnam is great for honeymooners - especially those looking for a more active honeymoon or to combine some touring with relaxation.

There are plenty of options to add a bit of romance to your travel in Vietnam.

Cruise on a boutique Junk through beautiful Halong Bay, indulge in a private pool villa with all spa treatments included, enjoy drinks at a rooftop bar in Saigon and take a private overnight Sampan cruise through the Mekong Delta.

How long have you been organising holidays to Indochina?

We've been organising tailor made holidays to Vietnam for over 10 years.

Our team has a wealth of combined experience in the industry and our Director has been involved in organising holidays to Vietnam since the early 1990's.

Our partners on the ground in Indochina have over 20 years experience in operating there.

They understand the region extremely well and have a strong infrastructure of staff, guides and vehicles.

We've had the same partnership in Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos for over 10 years.

How does your office in Vietnam help?

We have our own staff in Saigon which helps in many ways with our customers in Vietnam and South East Asia.

It helps us to keep on top of any new hotel and travel developments in the region and forge stronger relationships with hotels and other partners.

We regularly do our own inspections of hotels and destinations in the region.

Should our clients need any assistance during a trip, we always have at least one of our own staff on the same time zone, and we're open 7 days a week in Saigon.

Touring Vietnam

A stay at the The Majestic Saigon can be incorporated into one of our tailor made tours of Vietnam or Indochina.

We have a selection of suggested Vietnam tours which include Saigon.

A stay in Saigon is essential to get a true feel for Vietnam since it's Vietnam's most dynamic, vibrant and most populated city.

A stay of 2 nights is the minumum you should consider for Saigon as there is plenty to see and do and there are a couple of great side trips to consider - namely the Cu Chi Tunnels and the Mekong Delta.

Saigon is often included at the start or the end of a tour of Vietnam or Indochina since many flights arrive and depart from here.

It's also possible to travel overland (or by water) between here and Cambodia.
