137 Pillars House

137 Pillars House is a delightful luxury sanctuary in Chiang Mai, where 30 extremely spacious suites are set in twin two-storey buildings at either end of charming gardens with Flame Trees, lily ponds, an ancient Banyan Tree and a 25 metre long heated saltwater swimming pool beside a unique hanging wall garden.

Suites feature private outdoor areas and very large bathrooms.

137 Pillars is located in a bucolic riverside setting, a neighbourhood of Thai artisans, European architecture, great little cafes and restaurants, easily explored on foot or by bicycle.

Next door to 137 Pillars House is a Thai Temple, home to a dozen monks and housing multiple pagodas.

The district was a designated foreign residents area in Chiang Mai in former times, testified by a number of plush teakwood houses in the vicinity.

Also next door to the hotel is the Temple Museum founded by former 137 Pillars House owner Jack Bain and filled with quirky Chiang Mai memorabilia including ornate royal clothing and an extensive collection of old photographs.

What’s so Special?

A sense of history pervades 137 Pillars House. The house was once home to Louis Leonowens, the son of Anna (the lady tutor of ‘The King and I’ fame) and was the HQ of the East Borneo Company who set up here in the late 1800’s on the invitation of the King, to cut trees across the vast teak forests of northern Thailand.

The house was then sold to a Harrow educated Scotsman, William Bain, who married a Mon girl and raised a family, as did his son Jack.

The modern day owner, a Thai lady has converted the house into a charming boutique hotel, opened to great acclaim and very positive reviews in 2012 and paying homage to the heritage and history of the house.

We think 137 Pillars House is ideal for honeymooners to Thailand or for couples seeking luxury and privacy. The service is really top notch, which has been reflected in the reviews since the hotel opened.

Bear in Mind

We can’t think of too many downsides to 137 Pillars House – just remember to book early, there are only 30 Suites and it is a popular hotel.

Rajah Brooke Suite

All larger than 70 square metres, these One Bedroom Suites each extend to a large airy, vintage tiled veranda, fan-cooled and looking over tropical gardens, with cane shades for privacy, a rattan planter’s chairs and a plush day bed. Bedrooms feature four-poster King-size beds.

Bathrooms are a bit of an adventure. Entering via a vast walk-in closet, the en-suite bathroom with twin-vanities includes a freestanding Victorian bath and beyond that, a separate indoor and outdoor garden shower.

Timber floors and whitewashed walls create a luxurious, clean, crisp feel to the rooms, which are immaculately presented.

For families these can be booked as interconnecting suites. Some people prefer to be on the first floor where the Suites are a little more private and receive more of a breeze on the terraces.

Features:

  • Air Con
  • Free Wi-Fi

The Dining Room

For breakfast, lunch and dinner, The Dining Room adjacent to Pillars House is a stylish and comfortable dining venue, in a turquoise colour scheme and serving Thai classics and international dishes, with an emphasis on showcasing local ingredients and menus. Go al fresco on the adjacent courtyard surrounded by the tropical gardens.

Palette

A delight to the senses, Palette is a place to enjoy exquisite cuisine in an intimate setting, as well as admiring engaging Nouveau Asian Art exhibits.

Seating up to 20, Palette is located in the hotel's original teak homestead, which dates back to the 1800's. Palette's menu is light and artistic, offering a selection of cuisine with a brilliant array of colour and flavours using locally sourced and organic produce.

The Kitchen

Thai sunlit and you won’t be cleaning up, our Kitchen is a showpiece and gathering place for Thai cooking demonstrations from our gourmet and visiting chefs who also host meals around the shiny countertop.

We welcome you regardless of prior cooking experience to share in lively conversation and the delectable fruits of your culinary labor.

Private Dining

Sometimes the desire to stay in, snuggle under or sneak away overtakes you. The discreet staff of 137 Pillars House will deliver any dish to your living quarters or a private spot on the property grounds.

For adventure filled days or upon departure, the kitchen team will also prepare gourmet picnic baskets and light lunch boxes good to go.

The Library Bar

The library houses fantastic magazines, coffee table books, newspapers and paperbacks and the library bar serves fresh fruit drinks, Italian and local coffee and teas, wines, brandy, port, sherry, cognacs and aperitifs.

The Parlor Lounge

Afternoon high tea is served in the same classic style as Chiang Mai’s early foreign visitors enjoyed. The Parlor Lounge is a cosy indoor nook within Pillars House, with afternoon tea served by the infinity pool or on The Lawn.
