Day 1: Fly UK - Siem Reap

Fly overnight from the UK to Siem Reap, Cambodia.

Day 2: Siem Reap

Arrive in Siem Reap and transfer to your hotel with the rest of the day at leisure.

Overnight Siem Reap. Breakfast included.

Day 3: Siem Reap

Enjoy a morning touring the Temples of Angkor, one of the world's great historical sites. This morning focuses on the Temple of Angkor itself.

Following your introduction to Angkor, head to Preah Dak, a village famous for its num banh chok, the traditional rice noodles that are Cambodia’s unofficial national dish.

Noodle stalls abound in Preah Dak, but the highlight for visitors may be the chance to see the traditional process by which these noodles are made at the Khmer Noodle House.

Preah Dak itself is as almost as traditional as the noodle-making process. Stroll among the stilt houses: water buffalo graze nearby, water is drawn from wells, and meals are cooked over open fires.

In the afternoon, climb aboard a remork (three wheeled tuk tuk) and explore the town of Siem Reap with its thriving art scene.

Visit an artisans workshop and an Apsara dance studio to learn more about traditional Khmer culture.

Overnight Siem Reap. Breakfast included.

Day 4: Siem Reap

Today head back to the temples and see the spectacular remnants of Angkor Thom, the royal city.

Built during the heyday of the Khmer dynasty in the 12th century, this extraordinary complex of Hindu and Buddhist monuments was once lost to the world for many years, hidden under dense jungle vines.

Visit the South gate of Angkor Thom, the Bayon, Ta Prohm, Bantay Srei and Ta Keo. In the evening enjoy an Apsara dance show with dinner.

Overnight Siem Reap. Breakfast included.

Day 5: Siem Reap - Kampong Cham

Enjoy the morning at leisure.

In the afternoon transfer to the RV Navigator and check in for your Mekong Cruise, setting sail in the afternoon.

Overnight on board. All meals included.

Day 6: Wat Hanchey - Angkor Ban

Today visit children at a local school and friendly villagers in their homes and enjoy a rare opportunity to receive a special water blessing from Buddhist monks.

You may encounter more children when you stop at a beautifully situated temple complex on a hilltop. Wat Hanchey has incredible views of the Mekong River—you get a real sense of just how huge the river is as you see it stretch into the distance, looking more like a great lake than a river.

Before your departure receive a traditional water blessing from the local monks.

Enjoy a decadent Cambodian-themed dinner this evening.

Overnight on board. All meals included.

Day 7: Phnom Penh

The RV Navigator continues on to Phnom Penh.

Discover the graceful and elegant capital of Cambodia with a panoramic morning city tour by tuk tuk. Visit the Royal Palace, the Silver Pagoda and the National Museum.

The afternoon is free for your own explorations.

Overnight on board. All meals included.

Day 8: Phnom Penh

Today discover something of Cambodia's more recent past with a visit to the Killing Fields and Tuol Sleng, the infamous Khmer Rouge detention centre.

Overnight on board. All meals included.

Day 9: Evergreen Island Tan Chau

Today get a taste of the way of life in the Mekong Delta during a sampan tour that carries you through the floating villages that line the banks of the great river to the town of Tan Chau.

Embark your sampan to cruise through the canals to Evergreen Island, where a rickshaw ride through the village reveals traditional houses built on stilts, an essential precaution during the rainy season, when the Mekong rises and spills into all of the towns that line the river.

Stop at a temple devoted to Vietnam’s home-grown religion Cao Dai and visit a factory where you can watch baskets and mats being handwoven from reeds grown on the delta and check out a floating fish farm.

Overnight on board. All meals included.

Day 10: Gieng Island - Sa Dec

Take to Sa Dec’s narrow canals aboard a sampan, just as the locals do. Children frolic in the water, fishermen ply their trade, and women care for their families.

From here, head into town, and enjoy a walk through a crowded and colourful local market—stands sell everything from snake blood, fresh fish, clothing and flowers to mangosteens— on your way to the romantic, lacelike Huynh Thuy Le House, a late-19th-century home made famous by best-selling French novelist Marguerite Duras.

Sail from bustling Sa Dec to serene Gieng Island to dip into another aspect of Vietnam’s past: The triangle-shaped island is home to a surprising array of 19th-century Catholic churches and monasteries that date to an era when it was the largest Catholic parish in Vietnam.

Overnight on board. All meals included.

Day 11: Cai Be - Sa Dec

Today experience an authentic slice of daily life along the Mekong with visits to two quintessentially Vietnamese locales, Vinh Long and Cai Be, which you’ll see by sampan.

Meet village elders, experience the lively floating market and visit workshops creating products made from rice.

Chinese herbal-medicine shops, French Colonial houses and Buddhist temples mingle with modern offices on the streets of Vinh Long, the capital of Vinh Long province and the range of buildings hints at the changes that the region has seen.

Step aboard a luxurious traditionally designed sampan to join the locals thronging the harbour of Cai Be’s floating market.

It’s a colorful and lively scene, typical of Mekong Delta towns, though few similar villages feature a handsome French Gothic–style cathedral as a background.

Visit the delightful An Kiet House, built early in the 19th century for a member of the royal family.

Also visit a local producer of rice candies, rice paper and various other products made from this Vietnamese staple.

Overnight on board. All meals included.

Day 12: Saigon

After breakfast transfer to Saigon and check in to your chosen hotel.

In the afternoon make a visit to the Cu Chi Tunnels, made famous during the wars against the French and Americans.

Overnight Saigon. Breakfast included.

Day 13: Saigon

Enjoy a full day tour including the highlights of Saigon such as Ben Thanh Market and the Reunification Palace.

Overnight Saigon. Breakfast included.

Day 14: Saigon - UK

Transfer to the airport for your flight back to the UK.

Day 15: Arrive UK

Arrive back in the UK

Is this a Private Tour or a Group Tour?

All of our tours are private tailor made itineraries, customised for you - we can amend things to entirely suit you around the cruise itinerary.

You will have your own private car, driver and guide on any additional excursions you choose to do before or after the cruise.

All shore excursions are done on a group basis with other cruise passengers.

What are the departure dates?

Let us know your preferred dates of travel and we will find the best and most suitable flights to fit your itinerary.

We will organise dates around departure dates with the RV Navigator Cruise.

Which Airlines do you use?

We work with all the major airlines flying to this part of the world.

Typically for Indochina, Thai Airways, Singapore Airlines, Vietnam Airlines and Emirates would be airlines we would often use.

However, just let us know your preferred airline if you have one. We can organise flights from any regional destination in the UK.

There are direct flights from the UK to Saigon currently with Vietnam Airlines.

Which Hotels do you use?

We're careful with our choice of hotels, but we're guided by our customers also. If you have some preferred hotels, just let us know.

We specialise in boutique hotels and so we will often suggest some of our favourite smaller hotels where we think these will be suitable.

We keep on top of hotel developments in Vietnam from our office in Saigon and regularly inspect the hotels we use.

Do you cater for Solo Travellers?

Yes, we have many solo travellers and Indochina is a very safe, friendly and welcoming destination for those travelling alone.

Mekong River cruises are a popular option for solo travellers. RV Navigator sometimes offer no Single Supplements on departures.

Why should we book with you and not directly?

We have the very best rates to pass on to you, which should make it cheaper than booking directly.

All of our holidays are priced in Pound Sterling which means you are not exposed to currency fluctuations and poor exchange rates if you are paying for your cruise in US Dollars.

Your holiday also enjoys full financial protection through ATOL and the Travel Trust Association by booking with us.

How long have you been organising River Cruise holidays?

We've been organising tailor made river cruise holidays to Indochina for over 10 years.

Our team has a wealth of combined experience in the industry and our Director has been involved in organising holidays to Indochina since the early 1990's.

Our partners on the ground in Indochina have over 20 years experience in operating there.

They understand the country extremely well and have a strong infrastructure of staff, guides and vehicles within Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos. We've had the same partnership for over 10 years.

How does your office in Vietnam help?

We have our own staff in Saigon which helps in many ways with our customers in Indochina and South East Asia.

It helps us to keep on top of any new hotel and travel developments in the region and forge stronger relationships with hotels and other partners.

We regularly do our own inspections of hotels and destinations in the region.

Should our clients need any assistance during a trip, we always have at least one of our own staff on the same time zone, and we're open 7 days a week in Saigon.

Notes

Named after the French archeologist who discovered the Angkor temple complex, the Henry Mouhot lounge is the perfect place to curl up with a book. Or an e-book as it is wifi connected. The Lounge has a decidedly scholarly air about it – the furniture is made out of teak, the colors are soothing and the artefacts carefully chosen to bring back memories of the past.

The water level varies a great deal according to the time of the year and the amount of rainfall recorded, meaning minor changes to the itinerary may occur during different seasons.

This itinerary can also be done in reverse, beginning in Saigon and ending in Siem Reap.
