Ladakh Village Experience

Often referred to as 'Little Tibet', Ladakh is a former Himalayan Kingdom sitting at an altutude of 3,500 metres above sea level and home to in tact Tantric Buddhist culture, untouched by the ravages of the Chinese Communist revolution.

Fly from Delhi to the capital Leh, and head off the beaten track into the untouched villages in the Indus Valley in Ladakh, the remote northern Himalayan region of northern India.

Walk between villages and discover the life and culture of this beautiful region, truly some of the most spectacular scenery in the world.

This guided walking tour of Ladakh can be tailored to suit your requirements and fitness level and involves staying in beautifully converted local village houses.

Day 1: Fly from Delhi to Leh

Make your own way to the airport in Delhi for your flight to Leh, the capital of Ladakh.

On arrival you will be met by a representative from Shakti and transferred to the Shakti village house in Nimoo village (3,190 m), 36 km west of Leh at the confluence of the Zanskar and Indus Rivers.

Apricot, apple and walnut orchards are set amidst lush greenery, with the dramatic background of mountains all around.

Spend the rest of the day relaxing and acclimatising.

Overnight Nimoo. All meals included.

Day 2: Ladakh - Nimoo

After breakfast enjoy a leisurely walk around the village of Nimoo, with a fascinating insight into Ladakhi life.

Return to the house for lunch.

Spend the afternoon relaxing in the house or make an excursion to Basgo Fort where there are 3 Buddhist Monasteries.

Enjoy the starlit sky with a Ladakhi dinner in the house.

Overnight Nimoo. All meals included.

Day 3: Ladakh - Chilling

After breakfast, drive up the Zanskar Canyon to the village of Chilling (3,260 m).

The village is home to metalsmiths, working with copper, bronze, tin, iron and silver. Witness a craftsman at work before returning to Nimoo by white water raft (gentle rapids) for lunch.

After lunch you can enjoy an afternoon hike with your guide, or relax in the house and enjoy a Ladakhi cooking lesson.

Overnight Nimoo. All meals included.

Day 4: Ladakh - Alchi -Likhir

This morning head to Alchi (3,120 m), a fascinating monastery and the only one in Ladakh to be built on flat ground.

The monastery is notable for its Indian and Kashmiri influences.

Afterwards drive for about 20 minutes and enjoy lunch at Saspol.

From Saspol drive to the village of Likhir, from where you can walk to the next village or continue by car if you wish.

A starlit sky will emphasise the remoteness of this area.

Overnight Likhir. All meals included.

Day 5: Ladakh - Lamayaru - Likhir

This morning visit the village of Lamayaru, 2.5 hours away. Lamayaru is the oldest monastery in Ladakh (founded in the 10th century). Enjoy a guided walk around the monastery.

After lunch visit Rizong Monastery, renowned for its strict monastic rules.

Alternatively, keen trekkers can make the moderately difficult walk to Yangthang, part of the delightful Shang Valley trek.

Overnight Likhir. All meals included.

Day 6: Ladakh - Likhir - River House

This morning visit Phyang, 90 minutes from Likhir. Stop for lunch and visit a spectacular monastery which houses a 900-year-old museum.

From here drive for an hour to the River House in the village of Ranbirpur, a 4-bedroom house on the banks of the Indus, with magnificent views of the Stok Kangri Mountain range and three monasteries.

Later in the day, visit a local soothsayer.

Overnight River House. All meals included.

Day 7: Ladakh - River House

For those able to start early, be up at 5 am for the 30-minute drive to Thiksey Monastery (3,400 m), in time for morning Buddhist prayers.

From here visit Ladakh's largest monastery, Hemis (3,500 m). Alternatively enjoy a full day hike - the first day of the normal 4-day hike up Stok Kangri, Ladakh's highest mountain.

Overnight River House. All meals included.

Day 8: Ladakh - Delhi

After breakfast you will be transferred to the airport for your flight from Leh back to Delhi.
