This transitional zone, called “Norte Chico” stretches from fertile land on the south to the arid desert of Atacama on the north.
Norte Chico offers clear skies almost all year round making it perfect for star gazing. Moreover, the area is also home to important astronomical observatories including Cerro Tololo or Mamalluca.
On the coast, La Serena is a colonial-style seaside resort worth visiting. The city serves as a hub to explore the beautiful Elqui Valley or the Parque Nacional Fray Jorje, a rare small cloud forest.
The world famous Pisco is produced in Norte Chico’s green valleys. This brandy liquor made only from certain varieties of grapes is exported from both Peru and Chile and both countries claim the Pisco Sour as their national drink.
