Day 1: Fly UK to Hanoi

Overnight flight UK to Hanoi.

Day 2: Hanoi

On arrival in Hanoi you will be met and transferred to your chosen hotel by private car with the rest of the day at leisure.

Overnight Hanoi.

Day 3: Hanoi

Enjoy a full day city tour of Hanoi. Visit the Temple of Literature, one of the best examples of traditional Vietnamese architecture and the site of Vietnam’s first University.

Continue to One Pillar Pagoda and the Ho Chi Minh Memorial Complex.

Visit Ho Chi Minh’s Mausoleum, see Ho Chi Minh’s Stilt House and visit the excellent Museum of Ethnology.

In the afternoon, visit Hoan Kiem Lake and Ngoc Son Temple, and en-route pass colonial landmarks such as the Opera House and St Joseph’s Cathedral.

Day 4: Hanoi - Ha Giang

Transfer by car to the mountains of northern Vietnam.

Located 5 km from Ha Giang, Ban Me is a well-preserved village, with a clean and well-run homestay.

This afternoon, enjoy some trekking - about 6 km in total.

Overnight Ha Giang. Breakfast included.

Day 5: Ha Giang - Dong Van

Travel north to Quan Ba to visit a local market (On Saturday's only).

This is a market by the road with H'mong, Dzao ethnic minority.

As in other ethnic markets, this is a place where young people wear their Sunday best as it's a place to meet and mingle as much as to buy things.

Drive to Pho Cao village (a H'mong village), a stunning village set amongst corn fields.

Visit Pho Bang (a Chinese minority village) where the houses are built from clay and have colourful Chinese scrolls above every door.

Visit Lung Cu Flag Pole, situated atop Dragon Mountain and marking the border with China.

There are panoramic views here of terraced fields, the Nho Que river and of the mountain ranges stretching into the distance.

Travel to Dong Van Rocky Plateau and Dong Van for your overnight stay in this small town.

Day 6: Dong Van - Ha Giang

Visit Dong Van market (Sundays only) which is a colourful weekly occasion.

Travel to Meo Vac with a photo stop at the Ma Pi Leng Pass over some of the most amazing scenery in Vietnam.

The pass descends into a pretty valley where a colourful bustling market and little town of Meo Vac are situated.

Meo Vac is a land of rugged mountains and beautiful hill villages remaining unchanged for centuries.

The Meo Vac market (Sunday only) attracts a wide variety of ethnic minority groups who walk here all the way from their mountain villages.

Markets in the northern mountainous areas are often called the Love Markets as young people come here on parade in search of prospective husbands or wives.

Day 7: Ha Giang - Hanoi

Today return by private vehicle back to Hanoi with the rest of the day at leisure.

Day 8: Halong Bay

After breakfast transfer to Halong Bay and check-in for your overnight cruise of Halong Bay.

Lunch will be served after departure. Today the boat visits Cua Van fishing village, a typical floating village on Halong bay.

Afterwards cruise to Tung Sau, a Pearl Farm area where there is a chance to enjoy swimming or kayaking.

Back on board, a cooking demonstration will reveal some of the secrets of Vietnamese cuisine. As the sun goes down, cocktails are served on deck before dinner.

Note: Itinerary applies to Paradise Cruise. Other cruise operators’ itineraries differ slightly.

Day 9: Halong Bay - Hanoi - Hue

Enjoy a relaxing morning with an early morning Tai Chi session on deck, or enjoy swimming or kayaking.

The cruise continues around the most beautiful parts of the bay with breakfast served on board.

A visit is made to spectacular Sung Sot Cave, one of Halong Bay’s most famous grottoes before returning to disembark shortly before 11 am.

Transfer to the airport in Hanoi, Haiphong or Van Dong for your flight to Hue where you will be met and transferred to your chosen hotel.

Day 10: Hue

Enjoy a full day excursion in Hue. Visit the Old Imperial City, a vast complex built in the early 19th century where the remaining monuments provide a fascinating glimpse into the court life of the Nguyen Dynasty.

After the Palace, visit the Imperial Tomb of Tu Duc, located a short distance outside Hue.

Enjoy the tranquil atmosphere, wandering amongst the graceful pavilions, courtyards and lotus ponds.

Afterwards visit the Imperial Tomb of Khai Dinh, dramatically located on a hillside.

Lastly, visit Vinh Tu Garden House with an introduction to its history by the house owner, before transferring back to your hotel.

Day 11: Hue – Hoi An

You will be collected from your hotel for the scenic journey across the Hai Van Pass to Hoi An.

Check in to your hotel with the rest of the day at leisure in Hoi An.

Day 12: Hoi An

Enjoy a half day walking tour of Hoi An, one of the most interesting and picturesque towns in Vietnam.

See the highlights of Hoi An in a morning tour, visiting the most interesting temples and sights.

The walking tour will include five of the sites below:

Quan Cong Temple, one of the most interesting of the Chinese temples in Hoi An; Phuoc Kien Pagoda a Chinese pagoda built around 1690; The Japanese Covered Bridge, Hoi An's most famous and revered sight; The Tran Family Chapel; Sa Huynh Museum which contains exhibitions from the earliest period of Hoi An's history; Phung Hung House,occupied by the same family for eight generations and Quang Dong Pagoda, a small Chinese style temple with a lintel gate, a rockery courtyard and lucky animals depicted in statuary.

The rest of the day is at leisure to relax or explore the stimulating old town of Hoi An.

Day 13: Hoi An - Kon Tum

From Hoi An drive to Kon Tum in Vietnam's Central Highlands.

Explore Kon Tum, a pleasant rural town tucked away on the banks of the Dakbla River, in the northern part of the Central Highlands, an area inhabited by different ethnic minorities, including the Bahnar, Jarai, Rengao and Sedang.

Visit a Rong House of the Bahnar minority, a communal centre for all important events such as marriages, funerals, prayer meetings and other rituals.

They are typically built on tall stilts as protection against wild animals.

Stroll around the town and visit the distinctive wooden church which is located right in the middle of Kon Tum town.

Day 14: Kon Tum - Buon Ma Thuot

The capital of Dak Lak province, Buon Ma Thuot is a prosperous town in a region known for coffee plantations and a diverse Montagnard (hilltribe) population.

In the morning, visit the town highlights, beginning with the Ethnographic Museum, which provides a comprehensive insight into the many distinct ethnic groups of the province, which include the Ede and M'nong, among others.

Displays feature traditional Montagnard dress, as well as agricultural implements, fishing gear and musical instruments.

Continue to the Khai Hoan Pagoda, the Lac Giao Temple and the local Catholic Church.

Overnight Buon Ma Thuot. Breakfast included.

Day 15: Buon Ma Thuot - Lak Lake - Dalat

Lak Lake is a tranquil area where inhabitants still follow a traditional rural lifestyle.

Enjoy a dugout canoe trip to various Mnong villages on the lake.

This matrilineal tribe passes name and inheritance through the female line, and generally live in longhouses.

Continue on to Dalat.

Day 16: Dalat - Nha Trang

Nestled in the mountains, Dalat is a former colonial hill station with an abundance of colourful parks, lakes, gardens and waterfalls.

Its ever temperate climate has earned it the name, the City of Eternal Spring.

Stroll around the French District, an area reminiscent of a provincial town in France; visit the beautiful church, Domaine de Marie; and continue to XQ Embroidery to see the exquisite art of hand embroidery.

Get an insight into the daily life of the last Vietnamese emperor at Bao Dai's Summer Palace; and see rare and colourful flowers in the Flower Garden.

Continue down to the coast at Nha Trang.

Day 17: Nha Trang - Phan Thiet

Take a scenic drive from Nha Trang along the coastal road to Vinh Hy Bay, an area that still remains unspoiled due to its proximity to the Nui Chua National Park.

The landscape here is dotted with large boulders and rocky hills covered with twisting trees and all species of cacti and shrubs.

Visit a quaint fishing village and take a boat ride out on the emerald water for a glimpse of the coral reefs through the glass panes in the bottom of the boat. Swim and snorkel if you wish.

Have a seafood lunch at a local restaurant before continue along the beautiful coastal road.

Before arriving in Mui Ne, visit the white sand dunes and Lotus Lake around sunset.

Day 18: Phan Thiet - Saigon

Drive from Phan Thiet to Saigon with the rest of the day at leisure.

Day 19: Saigon

Enjoy a morning city tour of Saigon, including the markets, Reunification Palace and the War Remnants Museum.

Day 20: Saigon - Cu Chi Tunnels - Tay Ninh

Drive through the countryside to Tay Ninh and the colourful, whimsical building home to the eclectic Cao Dai religion.

The Cao Dai Great Temple has architecture that could have come straight from a Walt Disney fantasy and where all the major faiths of the world blend together in a unique religious mosaic, a strange but compelling sight.

After lunch in a local restaurant, journey from Tay Ninh to the Cu Chi Tunnels, an incredible network of 200 km underground tunnels constructed by the Vietnamese resistance fighters during the French and American wars.

Start the visit with the Ben Dinh or Ben Duoc sections of the tunnel. Here you can imagine what it was like to be a guerrilla complete with Russian Carbine rifles and AK 47’s on display. In the late afternoon journey back to Saigon.

Day 21: Saigon - Mekong Delta

After a journey through Ben Luc and Tan An, proceed to Ben Tre to take a boat trip on the Mekong River to Vam Xep Canal where local handicrafts and coconut sweets are produced.

Enjoy fresh seasonal fruits, a performance of traditional songs, and observe local life. Take a short ride on a horse carriage to a typical local house to taste some homemade honey-tea.

Proceed by sampan through the small canals to observe the daily life of local people along the riverbanks with some stops for a leisurely stroll.

Return to Saigon in the afternoon

Day 22: Saigon - UK

You will be collected from your hotel in Saigon and transferred to the airport for your overnight flight back to the UK.

Vietnam Airlines fly directly to both Hanoi and Saigon from the UK.

We're careful with our choice of hotels, but we're guided by our customers also. If you have some preferred hotels, just let us know.

We specialise in boutique hotels and so we will often suggest some of our favourite smaller hotels where we think these will be suitable.

We keep on top of hotel developments in Indochina from our office in Vietnam and regularly inspect the hotels we use.

Bear in mind on this Vietnam Odyssey tour, some of the accommodation is fairly basic in the mountain regions (Ha Giang, Dong Van and Kon Tum) due to limited choice.
