Saigon

Saigon (also known as Ho Chi Minh City) is the economic engine of Vietnam, a thriving, sprawling metropolis of 13 million people with at least as many scooters on its busy streets.

There are plenty of sights in Saigon and a city stay in Saigon is essential to really experience Vietnam properly.

Reminders of the war-time period are there in Saigon's re-unification Palace, the War crimes museum and the nearby Cu Chi Tunnels, whilst Saigon itself is dotted with French colonial buildings.

Although the Mekong doesn't flow through Saigon, the city is the logical starting point for this trip and is the gateway to the Mekong Delta.

It's a place to get your bearings in Vietnam and discover something of the culuture and vibrancy of Vietnam before heading down to the Mekong Delta.

The Mekong Delta

The Mekong Delta is Vietnam's most fertile region, also known as the 'rice bowl' of Vietnam.

Your Mekong Journey really begins in Vietnam's Mekong Delta with 3 nights in the Delta and plenty of time to get immersed in the way of life down in the Delta.

You'll spend the first two nights of this journey in Can Tho which is actually Vietnam's 5th biggest city.

From here you'll explore the Mekong Delta by boat, on two wheels and on foot. You'll meet local people and witness life on the waterways, big and small.

The Mekong Delta is home to some unique religions including Cao Daiism (4 million followers) and the Hoa Hoa sect of Buddhism which has over 2 million followers.

You will get an insight into the religious ways of life in the Delta during your stay.

Phnom Penh

Phnom Penh, Cambodia's lively capital has some bustling markets, impressive temples and a great little museum which will elucidate much about the magnificent monuments further north.

On a more sobering note, the Killing Fields and Tuol Sleng are moving testaments to more recent events and important places to visit to really understand modern day Cambodia.

On your Mekong Journey you'' visit the important sites in Phnom Penh, take an evening cruise along the river and learn about the country's turbulent recent past.

Kampong Cham

Kampong Cham is Cambodia's 6th biggest city and a busy port town by the Mekong.

It was here that the first bridge over the Mekong in Cambodia was constructed.

Kampong Cham is named after the Cham people, of whom there are only about 400,000, half of whom live in Cambodia.

The Cham in Cambodia are mostly Muslims (those in Vietnam are largely Hindu).

It is estimated that the Khmer Rouge killed almost half of the Cham people in Cambodia - quite a sobering thought.

If you see headscarved women in the Mekong Delta and South of Cambodia, it is likely that they are Cham.

Kratie

Kratie (pronounced Krachee) is both the name of a tiny town on the banks of the Mekong River and a province in Northeast Cambodia.

Firmly on the backpackers trail but not on the mainstream visitor’s agenda, a visit to Kratie has some interesting sights to offer.

Visitors come here to see the Irrawaddy dolphins, to admire the jungle scenery and to see Phnom Sombok, a hill temple just north of town.

This is a sparsely populated region of Cambodia and things are very quiet and sleepy.

Southern Laos

Southern Laos is one of the most interesting regions of Laos, with historic sites, ancient temples, the Mekong River, waterfalls, diverse cultures and beguiling landscapes.

With Luang Prabang and the far north grabbing most of the headlines, Southern Laos is only now slowly emerging as an area of great interest to rival the attractions of the north.

Wat Pho offers a World Heritage Temple site dating back 1500 years, Don Khone Island reveals a glimpse of sleepy Lao River life and the Phapheng Waterfalls is the largest cascade on the lower Mekong.

The lively town of Pakse is the main gateway to Southern Laos and is not without it's charms as more and more people are discovering.

Vientiane

Vientiane is one of the sleepiest capital cities in the world, with wide boulevards and little traffic.

The capital of Laos is very accessible by air or overland from Bangkok and is the springboard for travel into the north or south of Laos.

Vientiane has a few attractions including the stunning gilded That Luang Stupa and Laos’ own version of the Arc de Triumph.

Sunsets by the Mekong are always spectacular and most visitors find themselves by the Mekong for sun-down.

Vang Vieng

Vang Vieng has been something of a backpackers mecca for years, but this small picturesque town on the banks of the Nam Song River is now emerging as a more mature destination, offering something more than a hedonistic adventure stop for Gap Year kids.

Vang Vieng makes a convenient stop on the winding overland route from Luang Prabang to Vientiane, itself one of the most beautiful stretches of road in Laos.

The Mekong River here is particularly beautiful, winding between tall limestone cliffs in a landscape which could be straight out of a Chinese water-colour painting.

Luang Prabang

Luang Prabang is a World Heritage designated town and without doubt the highlight of any trip to Laos.

Laid-back and charming, Luang Prabang is a town of temples and monasteries where the pre-dawn alms round procession of monks brings out a steady stream of on-lookers.

The gold-clad temples, French style cafes and great local shops frequently detain those who only planned on staying a night or two.

There is plenty to see in and around town. Walking between temples is easy, cycling is a great option, and excursions to the surrounding countryside mean a stay of a few days in Luang Prabang is preferable.

There are a couple of superb luxury boutique hotels in Luang Prabang and plenty of more modest charming boutique hotels which add to the appeal of Luang Prabang.
