Scottsdale

Far removed from the ancient Hohokam people who occupied these lands in pre-European history, Scottsdale is a modern city in Arizona with a dazzling array of luxury spa resorts and exclusive golf clubs.

With year-round sun and an array of upmarket shopping venues and restaurants, the town is a Mecca for leisurely indulgences.

Once the sun sets, a buzzing nightlife bursts into action and an array of watering holes will keep visitors entertained long into the moonlit night.

For some exercise and to get a sense of the Old West, take a 30-minute drive out of the city to ‘Tom's Thumb Trailhead’, a moderate hike with scenic vistas.

Lake Havasu

Set in the Arizona desert on the banks of spectacularly scenic Lake Havasu, this attractive planned city is best known as the unlikely home of the original London Bridge, which was bought by the city’s developer in a successful attempt to increase tourism in the area.

Surrounding the bridge is the London Bridge Resort Village, a British-themed tourist area where visitors can experience a taste of European culture in the heart of the American Southwest.

Aside from this rather bizarre attraction, the city’s main draw is the lake itself, which provides an ideal environment for a variety of watersports including water skiing, power boating, fishing, canoeing, jet skiing and sailing.

Other must-see attractions include the Cattail Cove State Park, the Havasu National Wildlife Refuge, the Lake Havasu Museum of History and the Lake Havasu State Park.

Grand Canyon

Situated in the northwest corner of Arizona, the Grand Canyon National Park welcomes around 5 million visitors a year.

Nature and animal lovers, scientists, geologists and archaeologists continue to be mesmerised by the imposing beauty and splendour of its massive layered-rock canyons, river tributaries, fauna and flora, and historical significance.

Your touring options are endless: a drive along the incredibly scenic South Rim; a two-day mule trip down to the bottom of the canyon; hiking trails; helicopter or hot-air balloon tours; or white-water rafting down the Colorado River.

The park is home to around 500 species of animals and birds, including the endangered Californian condor, and six types of rattlesnakes.

Page/Lake Powell

Page is the gateway to Lake Powell and the mammoth Glen Canyon Dam that forms it.

With boat trips, water sports, horseback riding, and enough hiking trails to keep visitors busy for days, an outdoor paradise awaits.

Take a relaxing boat trip on the lake to see the Rainbow Bridge National Monument, the largest natural bridge in the world.

A 10-minute drive from town is the iconic Horseshoe Bend Observation Area, with its mesmerising views the canyon river making a dramatic turn around a mass of red sandstone.

For something adventurous, explore the surreal, sculpted landscapes of the Upper and Lower Antelope Canyons.

And to get away from the crowds, secure a permit from the Navajo office and head off the beaten trail to the impressive ‘Waterholes Canyon’, or hike with a Navajo guide to the ‘Cathedral Canyon’.

Monument Valley

In San Juan County in the southeastern corner of Utah, lies the vast, wild and sunbaked desert plane of Monument Valley.

This red-sand desert region is known for its towering sandstone buttes and forms part of the lands sacred to the Navajo Nation.

In this area, the stars of the Milky Way can be seen exceptionally clearly at night. Visitors can enjoy hiking, jeep tours, horse riding and stargazing on their own or escorted and narrated by Navajo guides.

Top activities also include touring the Monument Valley Drive for spectacular views of the landscape, hiking the Wildcat Trail for closer views of the buttes, learning more about the area at the Goulding Film and Cultural History Museum, and watching the sunrise from one of the many viewpoints.

Flagstaff

Situated on the Colorado Plateau, near the San Francisco Peaks mountain range and the Grand Canyon, Flagstaff is a vibrant university town and a popular base for exploring the numerous natural attractions of northern Arizona.

In the summer months, outdoor enthusiasts are attracted by the many hiking and mountain biking trails in the nearby mountains which transform in winter into an ideal snowy playground for skiers and snowboarders.

The town itself boasts a wide range of excellent accommodation options and restaurants as well as a pedestrian-friendly downtown area dotted with numerous historic buildings dating from the late 1800's to early 1900's.

Other popular attractions include the Arizona Historical Society Pioneer Museum, the Arboretum at Flagstaff, and the Museum of Northern Arizona.

Sedona

While Sedona boasts some exquisite natural beauty amidst the remarkable Red Rocks, mother nature is not the only artist at work in this bustling Arizona desert town.

For decades Sedona has been a mecca in the Southwest for artists, photographers, natural healers and free-spirited creatives drawn in by the town’s impressive array of art galleries and the reported mystical quality of the natural surrounds.

The area is equally attractive to outdoor enthusiasts keen to take advantage of the hiking and mountain biking opportunities among the incredible pinnacles, spires, buttes and domes of the surrounding canyons.

Whether you are seeking wonderful spa facilities, world-class vineyards, a thriving arts scene, phenomenal restaurants or simply some outstanding natural landscapes to explore, you are bound to find plenty to enchant you in and around the extraordinary town of Sedona.

Tucson

Located in southern Arizona, Tucson is an attractive city surrounded by the spectacularly scenic Sonoran Desert, as well as a number of dramatic towering mountain ranges.

As the second largest city in the state, Tucson serves as a vibrant commercial hub, as well as a laid-back university and resort town.

The city is known for its beautifully restored nineteenth-century mansions, quirky vintage shops, excellent museums and its extensive array of outdoor activities.

These include, among others: horseback riding, hiking, bird-watching and picnicking along the foothills of the magnificent Santa Catalina Mountains.

Other popular attractions include the Arizona State Museum, the oldest and largest anthropology museum in the Southwest; the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, featuring an aquarium and a zoo; and Old Tucson Studios, which boasts an amusement park with a classic Western theme.

Driving in the USA - Not very difficult

Driving in the USA is on the right-hand side.

Outside of the cities, driving is easier than you may think. Driving is generally sedate compared the UK and outside the cities, the roads are almost empty.

Almost all cars are automatic so there's no need to worry about gear changing in a left hand drive car.

Highways are long and straight - you won't find many winding roads, dead ends or hidden streets.

Everywhere is well-signed and there are relatively few roundabouts.

You can turn right on a red light (unless advised otherwise) and there are first-come-first-served four-way junctions which are surprisingly easy once you get the hang of them - basically whoever arrives first has the right of way.

There are a few local rules you might need to get familiar with e.g. parking in the direction of traffic in California, or driving with your lights on in in the rain in Florida.

One rule worth remembering is that if a school bus has stopped at a school sign you have to stop, whichever direction you're heading in if it's on a normal single lane road.

Occaisionally some freeways have a left hand exit, which mean you'll exit from the fast lane. They aren't that common and there will be plenty of advance notice.

Car Rental

You can choose from a range of cars in the US, including economy and compact vehicles to full-size vans and SUVs.

All of the cars are easy to drive, have all the mod cons and most are automatic.

It is important that you consider the size of your group and how much luggage you will travel with when choosing your rental vehicle. We also recommend travelling with soft bags as they are easier to load into vehicles.

Licence Requirements

Drivers must present a full licence held for a minimum of 12 months. The licence must be in English, or a foreign licence with an International Driving Permit (IDP). The minimum age is 21, or 25 for some car types.

Inclusions

Car hire inclusions can vary but typically include unlimited mileage, Goods & Services Tax (GST) and Standard Insurance with full excess.

One-way Drop Offs

One-way rentals must be arranged in advance and are subject to local drop off fees. They are not possible on economy grade cars.

Cross-border travel

Cars rented in the USA can be driven in any US state. The car must be returned to the location from which it was rented unless authorised otherwise.

Cars that are rented in Alaska must be returned to Alaska. Cars rented in the USA can be driven into Canada but they must be returned to the USA unless pre-arranged which may be subject to trans-border fees.

Motorhomes

The convenience of only having to unpack once, quality vehicles and a range of rental locations and one-way hires – a motorhome holiday is a fun and adventurous way to see USA.

Head out on the open highways, cruising away from the big centres and through iconic National Parks.

All motorhomes are simple to operate and easy to drive with automatic transmission and power breaking and steering.

We are pleased to offer a selection of motorhomes. The main difference between vehicle categories is the varying length and the passenger capacity.

Newly introduced are T17 vehicles, perfect for couples or those who do not wish to drive the bigger RVs on offer.

These new trucks are available to pick up from Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Pheonix and San Francisco.

Classic Self Drive Destinations

The USA is so large and diverse it can be difficult to know where to begin when deciding on a self-drive holiday.

The beauty of the States is that a self-drive holiday can be accomplished just about anywhere.

California

For a superb mix of scenery, great driving, cities and iconic destinations, California might be your number one pick.

Head down Route 1 and visit San Francisco, Monterey, Santa Barbara, Los Angeles, Palm Springs and San Diego.

It's easy to add on Las Vegas, Yosemite and the Napa Valley.

California Route 1

Just as iconic is California’s Pacific Coast Highway, also known as Route 1. This dream-like road hugs the beautiful coastline between San Francisco and Los Angeles and passes through the likes of the Instragram-worthy Big Sur and laid-back San Luis Obispo.

Our West Coast Discovery self-drive not only includes a trip along this coastal highway, but also a full loop around California’s highlight destinations such as San Diego, Death Valley and Yosemite National Park.

Pacific North West

Taking you from the Pacific Coast to the Cascade Mountains and back again, a Seattle-to-San Francisco road trip falls into the ‘epic journeys’ category and is a great alternative or addition to a California self-drive.

Route 66

There are a handful of iconic journeys, none more so than the historic Route 66. The ‘Mother Road’ once stretched from Chicago in the Midwest to the coastal city of Santa Monica and it hit its heyday in the post-war years.

Although the road has been decommissioned and much of it has been bypassed by multi-lane highways, you can still take a detour and follow sections of the kitsch-lined route along the way.

Las Vegas & the Grand Circle

Witness vast desert landscapes, otherworldly rock formations and hidden canyons of Arizona and Utah on a round trip from Las Vegas.

Begin in neon-lit Las Vegas where you can try your luck on the spinning roulette wheel. A city of true decadence, there's so many entertainment, drinking, dining and shopping opportunities in Las Vegas it's likely that you'll hardly scratch the surface.

With five National Parks and numerous State Parks, the state of Utah isn’t short of epic backdrops. Bryce Canyon and Zion are just a couple of hours apart, however they could not be much more different.

Colorado

This mile-high road trip through the Rocky Mountains comes with almost non-stop cover shot-worthy backdrops.

Scrape the sky as you cross high mountain passes, drop into forest-shaded valleys where historic railroads hug gold-flecked creeks and follow in the footsteps of the Southwest’s Ancestral Pueblo people.

Florida

The Sunshine State is great for families or grown-ups, but it’s more than just thrilling theme parks.

Enjoy scenic driving and laid-back spots, from awesome west- and east-coast sands to al fresco South Beach dining.

On a Florida self-drive holiday you can include Miami, the Everglades, the Florida Keys, Orlando, the Theme Parks and Kennedy Space Centre.

New England

Discover the best of the the New England States on a leisurely self-drive holiday.

Stop off in the Berkshires, a popular holiday haunt for Boston’s and New York’s elite since the 1800's; discover glorious mountains in New Hampshire and green scenery in Vermont; and savour stunning sea views in Newport, Rhode Island.

Georgia & the Carolinas

A genteel Deep South welcome awaits on a tri-state road trip through Georgia and North & south Carolina.

There’s a full-on start with an energetic adventure in ever-growing Atlanta, but the pace slows as you head for North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains, South Carolina’s sun-kissed coast and the Antebellum mansion-lined streets of Savannah.
