Away from its busy resorts lies an unexpected abundance of natural beauty, including forests and rivers, deserted strands filled with wildlife, and vibrant cities within reach of primeval swamps teeming with alligators.

Miami

Mention Miami and most people will conjure up mental images of sprawling sunny beaches crawling with models, celebrities and some absurdly attractive locals.

While this major city certainly does offer plenty of surf, sun and fun, it has so much more to offer than endless beach parties and glittering strips of upmarket hotels. Miami is a complex and fascinating melting pot of Latin America, Caribbean and Yankee cultures.

From the spirited Cuban community of Little Havana, to the glass, steel and concrete jungle of downtown Miami and the grand homes, luxurious hotels and glamorous locals of Miami Beach, this city offers an unrivalled multicultural experience.

These cultural contrasts allow for a veritable smorgasbord of international culinary delights, a wide range of cultural attractions, and remarkably diverse art and nightlife scenes all against a backdrop of a glittering turquoise ocean and golden-sand beaches.

Everglades National Park

Located west of Miami on the tip of the Florida peninsula, the Everglades National Park boasts incredible landscapes, a variety of animals, and an array of activities.

The park protects 2100 square kilometres of pristine watery wilderness made up of sultry marshes and prairie grasslands, fragrant pine forests and tangled mangrove swamps.

Extending to the coast, it culminates in a series of coral-rich bays. It is a hub of biodiversity with a host of resident wildlife that includes alligators, manatees, panthers and fish eagles.

You can explore the Everglades National Park on airboat cruises, canoes, kayak tours, on rented bicycle, or through guided hikes led by experienced park rangers.

Don’t miss the opportunity to climb to the top of the 20-metre observation tower in Shark Valley to take in the awe-inspiring views and explore the visitor centre’s exhibits and programmes.

Orlando

Known for its gleefully over-the-top showmanship and for possessing more theme parks and entertainment attractions than anywhere else in the world, Orlando offers all that and much more for the savvy traveller.

With its excellent shopping deals, charming boutique hotels, and restaurants that indulge every taste imaginable, Orlando is just as much a playground for grown-ups as it is for the little ones.

Outdoorsy visitors can hike, swim or canoe at the Ocala National Forest, Wekiwa Springs State Park or one of the area's many other sparkling springs.

If that sounds slightly too adventurous, there are plenty of museums on offer at Winter Park where you can enjoy some high-end shopping and dining on Park Avenue.

With all of this diversity on offer, it is little wonder that Orlando comes out on top as the most popular family destination on earth.

Florida Keys

This magnificent archipelago of about 1700 islands extends south and southwest of the Florida mainland as is famous worldwide for its natural beauty, superb weather, unmatched fishing and diving, and exciting nightlife opportunities.

While most visitors are attracted by the pristine beaches, those looking to get out of the sun for a while can explore the area’s intriguing cultural sites.

These include, among others: the Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum, Audubon House and Tropical Gardens and the Key West Art and History Museum at the Custom House.

With each of these idyllic little islands offering its own unique recreation and dining options, the Florida Keys seem to have been created solely for the purpose of relaxation and leisure.

Naples

The serene beach town of Naples may not possess quite the degree of cultural heritage as its European namesake, but what it lacks in historical significance it more than makes up for in laid-back ambience and quietly elegant luxury.

Instead of archaeological treasures, you will find first-class hotels and championship golf courses, and in the place of pasta, you'll find an outstanding cosmopolitan culinary scene boasting gastronomic delights from around the globe.

With its uber-luxurious waterfront estates and some of the most extravagant condos in the world sitting alongside its state of the art water park and the Golisano Children’s Museum of Naples, the seaside resort town of Naples manages to strike the perfect balance between sophisticated resort living and warm and welcoming family fun.
