Day 1: Fly UK to Bogota

Fly from the UK to Bogota.

On arrival you will be met and transferred to your chosen hotel.

Overnight Bogota. Breakfast included.

Day 2: Bogota & Monserrate

After breakfast, enjoy a half-day visit to the historic centre of Bogota known as La Candelaria.

Visit Plaza de Bolivar, the Cathedral, the Capitol, and the Botero and Gold Museums.

Afterwards enjoy a cable-car ride to the Santuario de Monserrate, a symbol of Bogota with panoramic views of the city.

Day 3: Bogotá - Zipaquirá - Villa de Leyva

After breakfast, drive for just over an hour to Zipaquirá, through the Sabana de Bogotá.

Visit the impressive Salt Cathedral, a true feat of engineering and one of the marvels of Colombia.

After the Salt Cathedral, continue on a 2-hour drive to Villa de Leyva in the afternoon and check in at your hotel.

Historic Villa de Leyva is a colonial jewel with an enormous plaza surrounded by Spanish style houses, small alleys, cobblestone streets and a beautiful 17thcentury church.

Visit the fossil museum in the afternoon and enjoy the evening to enjoy the atmosphere in the plaza.

Day 4: Villa de Leyva - Bogotá - Pereira

After breakfast, return to Bogotá, with a break at the Convento del Santo Ecce Homo and learn something of the evangelical history of this region of Colombia.

Transfer to El Dorado Airport in Bogota for the short flight to Pereira in the Zona Cafetera. Transfer to your hotel for overnight.

Day 5: Pereira - Valle del Cocora & Filandia - Pereira

After breakfast, leave for the Valle de Cocora which is located in the central mountains of the department of Quindio.

This makes up part of the Parque Nacional de los Nevados where there is excellent birdlife and the Quindian wax palm, the national tree of Colombia, can reach a staggering height of 60m.

Head into the cloud forest onwhich  foot or by horseback and enjoy the biodiversity of flora and fauna.

On the return journey, cross the River Quindio and see the tallest wax palms in the world.

Stop at a trout farm and then enjoy a traditional meal of smoked trout. Enjoy some free time here.

In the afternoon, continue 10 km to Salento for a city tour that visits the Plaza de Bolívar with its colourful balconies, the Calle Real, handicrafts shops and the Cocora viewpoint.

Visit the traditional village of Filandia and enjoy a tour that includes the viewpoint, the colonial homes, the Plaza de Bolivar and the coffee shops.

Here, enjoy some time soaking up the regional atmosphere and perhaps some local spirits before returning to the hotel.

Day 6: Pereira - Chinchina - Coffee Process Farming Region – Pereira

After breakfast, visit the coffee plantations along the steep hillsides.

Take a break in the Alto de La Paz, at a beautiful viewpoint before continuing on to one of the coffee haciendas to see the plantations and the production system in detail.

In the house learn about coffee preparation, toasting and the different qualities and properties of coffee before exploring the coffee plantations and the work of the coffee pickers.

Enjoy the afternoon at leisure.

Day 7: Pereira – Cartagena

Take an early transfer to Pereira airport for the flight to Cartagena, via Bogotá.

On arrival, transfer to your hotel for check in with the rest of the day free.

Day 8: Cartagena

Enjoy a City Tour beginning with a panoramic view of the city from the Monasterio and Iglesia de La Popa.

Continue to the San Felipe Fortress, erected in honor of the poet from Cartagena, Don Luis Carlos López.

Walk around the fortress and learn how the castle was constructed, the engineering feats, the tunnels, underground galleries and passageways.

Continue on to the Ciudad Vieja (old city) and visit the Convent and Church of San Pedro Claver, which dates back to the 17th Century.

Finally continue to the handicrafts zone of the Bovedas, a collection of archways built into the city wall of Cartagena, nowadays an artisan centre.

Enjoy the afternoon at leisure.

Day 9: Cartagena

After breakfast, enjoy the day at leisure to explore on your own, relax or take an optional excursion.

Day 10: Fly Cartagena - Bogotá - Quito 

After breakfast, fly from Cartagena to Quito via Bogotá.

Day 11: Quito

After breakfast visit Quito Colonial Town and the Equatorial Line.

Situated in a circle of Andean peaks, Quito is the world’s second highest capital. 

The colonial centre - declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1978 - is one of the largest and best preserved in Latin America.

The tour starts at the quirky Guapulo quarter and finishes at the “Panecillo” hillside with its breathtaking views of the old and modern city surrounded by the rolling Andes Mountains. 

As an addition to the Quito Colonial City Tour, visit the “Equatorial line” complex.

This monument is located right on the Equator and provides a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to straddle both hemispheres!

Day 12: Otavalo - Zuleta

Your guide will pick you up from the hotel after breakfast. You will visit Otavalo (about 2 hours' drive from north of Quito).

In Otavalo visit the main square and the Plaza de Ponchos, home to Otavalo’s famous market and a fantastic place to observe the culture and colourful dress of the Otavalo people.

Products such as wall hangings, wool sweaters, scarfs, leather goods and wood carvings are all produced in the area.

Lunch is served at Hacienda Chorlavi.

After lunch visit San Antonio de Ibarra and follow the back-roads to Zuleta farm.

Day 13: Zuleta

Today enjoy a free day at Hacienda Zuleta.

Hacienda Zuleta was built by the Jesuits in the 17th century, and was later purchased by a wealthy Ecuadorian family who have kept most of its architecture in tact, maintaining this magnificent historical building.

Zuleta is probably the most beautiful and productive farm in the northern part of Ecuador, owned by the Plaza family, and formerly by two presidents of Ecuador.

After breakfast, if you wish, visit the cheese factory and embroidery shop or take a walk to see the colourfully clad Zuleteño people at work in the fields.

Otavaleño women, on the contrary, wear black or dark blue skirts and are less conspicuous, but wear distinct golden necklaces.

Weather permitting there are excellent views of Imbabura volcano.

Return to the Hacienda in time for a nice cup of tea by the fireplace with the rest of the afternoon to enjoy the gardens and views around the farm or to sit by the fireplace and relax.

Day 14: Zuleta

There are plenty of things to enjoy at Zuleta.

Visit the Andean Condor rehabilitation project, about 5 km from the house in a valley surrounded by native forest.

See the eight condors being rehabilitated in captivity and with some luck, wild condors flying above.

A visit to ‘El Taller’ reveals Zuleta’s famous and beautiful embroidery work, in a workshop supporting local Zuleta women.

Francisca Carlosama, the head of the Zuleta Women’s Cooperative can demonstrate the process, and you are welcome to buy or order tablecloths, placemats, curtains, blouses and many other beautiful items.

Day 15: Quito

After lunch, return to Quito stopping en-route at the Equator monument in Cayambe.

Enjoy the afternoon at leisure in Quito to explore the historic old town.

Day 16: Cuenca

Transfer to the airport for your flight to Cuenca and transfer to your hotel.

Enjoy the afternoon exploring World Heritage Cuenca independently. Your guide will drive you around the centre to help you become orientated before dropping you off at the hotel.

The former Inca town of Cuenca was conquered by the Spanish in 1533 and founded in 1557. With a population of about 350,000, Cuenca is Ecuador’s third largest city and is unarguably the centre of culture and art of Ecuador.

For its charming historical district, the churches, the small cobbled streets and colonial houses with noble facades, prim balustrades, wrought iron balconies and red tiled roofs, it was declared a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO in 1999.

Day 17: Cuenca

Today enjoy a city tour of Cuenca, visit the museums, try typical food, and visit the main attractions on foot in Ecuador’s prettiest city.

Your guide will assist in finding a place for lunch, and we recommend Los Tiestos, El Jardin (Hotel Victoria), Villa Rosa or Casa Alonso.

In the afternoon, walk through the Calle Larga and visit the Puente Roto at the Tomebamba River and the Remigio Crespo Toral Museum.

La Esquina de las Artes is a small mall, home to the Vega Gallery.

You can also visit the Homero Ortega Museum (displaying a history of Panama Hats).

Day 18: Cuenca – Quito

After breakfast, morning or afternoon at leisure. 

Transfer to Cuenca Airport for your scheduled flight to Quito.

On arrival in Quito, your guide will meet you and take you to your hotel.
