Belize Barrier Reef

The Belize Barrier Reef spans 185 miles of the country’s coastline and is the largest reef system in the Northern Hemisphere and one of the world’s best diving destinations.

As the largest and most intact reef system within the Northern Hemisphere, the Belize Barrier Reef comprises seven key marine reserve zones, over four hundred cayes (islands) and three atolls.

The Belize Barrier Reef’s crystal blue waters are home to over five hundred species of fish, seventy hard coral and thirty six soft coral species.

Turneffe Atoll

If you’re looking for great fishing, Turneffe Atoll has it.

The islands have been recognized for over three decades as one of the Caribbean's top destinations for bonefish, tarpon and permit as well as a long list of other saltwater game fish.

Saltwater fishermen also have the chance at the "Grand Slam," catching a bonefish, permit and tarpon all in one day.

If fishing isn’t your thing, no worries, the islands are also home to countless aquatic species who would rather have you look at them than catch them any day. Grab your snorkel or scuba gear and take a look.

Great Blue Hole

Jacques Cousteau called the Great Blue Hole one of the top 10 diving sites in the world.

The large submarine sinkhole is 43 miles from the mainland and the crystal-clear blue water allows you to see stalactites, and sharks, lots of sharks!

This is truly a one-of-a-kind diving experience. See for yourself.

Lighthouse Reef

The most distant offshore reef, Lighthouse Reef offers a great look at coral and sea life in a relatively shallow area.

There are many different reefs within Lighthouse Atoll that are also great for exploring.

Half Moon Caye

Half Moon Caye is located in the lower southeast corner of the Great Barrier Reef and is something of a local paradise.

This small island is home to a national park and protected bird sanctuary (be sure to check out the treetop platform for the best bird watching).

Here, you get the best of both worlds, all in a tiny island. You can see the beach and the lush greenery all in a very short walk, and without the crowds!

Explore the marine lagoon, bounded by reef and sand islands, and a nesting site of the rare Red-Footed Booby, located on Half Moon Caye.

An observation tower and picnic facilities make this an ideal stop between dives.

Dive boats leave regularly from San Pedro.

  • The old Light House at Half Moon Caye is an iconic sight in Belize.
  • This island is a popular nesting spot for the Red Footed Boobie bird.
  • Take in some lunch between dives.
  • Snorkelling around this beautiful island is a fun way to see coral, sea-grass beds and an abundance of unique marine life.
  • Check out conch here.

Ambergris Caye

Ambergris Caye has big attractions and small crowds.

Ambergris Caye is the largest island in Belize and features the area's best nightlife and local dining.

Located next to the largest barrier reef in the western hemisphere, it’s safe to say that Ambergris Caye has some big attractions, but if that’s not your thing, there are plenty of smaller things to do.

From cobblestone streets of bustling San Pedro outward to the northern and southern ends of the island, there is a wide assortment of restaurants, bars, shops and hotels on Ambergris Caye to suit all budgets.

Take little naps on the beach or make small talk with the locals. In Ambergris Caye, going big or small is up to you.

Caye Caulker

Caye Caulker has it all. Looking to go slow? That's Caye Caulker's motto.

In fact, the main mode of transportation is by foot (or bicycle).

With everything from bird watching to checking out local shops and enjoying fresh seafood in the restaurants, there’s a lot going on. And that’s just on land.

Caye Caulker is also home to some of the best snorkelling and diving in Belize, as well as wind surfing, manatee tours and amazing fishing.

With all these things to do, you may need some time to relax. Thankfully, there’s a great beach, too.

  • Check-in at the Lazy Lizard Bar & order a Lizard Drink.
  • Check out the huge Tarpons in the island's reserve area.
  • A must-visit tour in the Caye Caulker area is the manatee tour at Swallow Caye. Manatees can be seen year-round in this protected area.
  • Here it's "Go Slow" all the time.
  • Enjoy barefoot bliss.
  • Be sure to take in the sun at the "split."
  • Visit the Mini Reserve south of the island.
