Sands at Chale Island

Chale Island is a small romantic island situated about 600 metres from the mainland and 10 km south of Diani Beach, 50 km south of Mombasa and 70 km from the border of Tanzania.

Chale Island is tiny, around 1 square km in size and is divided into two parts: the hotel, main beach and immediate surrounds and the forest and wildlife (reserve).

Wildlife abounds throughout the island, with troops of monkeys and baboons, bushbabys crying in the night, many species of birdlife, small antelope and butterflies.

There are 50 rooms at Sands Chale Island, in 7 different categories.

What's so Special?

The term “Chale” refers to the name of an old warrior of the Digo tribe who is buried on the island. On certain days of the year his descendants still come to celebrate religious rituals.

Standard Rooms

28 spacious semi-circular en-suite rooms are set in the main building and feature Swahili day beds set on breezy verandas facing the ocean.

Bandas

A Banda is Swahili for a small house.

All Bandas have high, palm thatch roofs with views either out to sea, over the beach, or with panoramas encompassing the lagoon, channel, mangroves and the setting sun over the Shimba Hills.

Sun beds set on private front lawns and large verandas with Swahili day beds offer relaxing views.

Which Airlines do you use for your Kenya Holidays?

We work with all the major airlines flying to the Kenya.

Typically for Kenya we will use Kenya Airways or British Airways for direct flights.

There are currently daily flights from Heathrow to Nairobi, departing in the morning and arriving the same day late in the evening.

The Kenya Airways flights are also direct but offer an overnight option meaning you'll arrive in the morning in time to connect with a safari flight.

The flying time for direct flights is about 8.5 hours.

We also commonly use Emirates via Dubai, Qatar Airways via Doha and Etihad via Abu Dhabi. These all allow stopover options in the Arabian Gulf to create a multi-centre holiday.

Regional connections from across the UK are available.

What about Safari Flights in Kenya?

Safari flights in Kenya operate from Nairobi Wilson Airport.

We usually use Safari Airlink who are Kenya's premier safari flight operator, flying to most safari destinations as well as Zanzibar, using Dash 8 and Cessna Caravan aircraft.

The Cessna's are the workhorses of safari flights and have large windows and overhead wings, meaning better views on your flight.

Luggage should be kept to a minimum on safari flights.

For safari flights in Kenya, the limit is typically 15 kg per person. This should be in soft bags as opposed to hard suit cases in order to fit in the baggage compartment on small aircraft.

Do I need a visa for Kenya?

If you're travelling on British Passports, a visa is required for stays of up to a month.

These can be obtained on arrival but to avoid queuing at the airport on arrival it's better to organise these in advance.

Please always check visa requirements as they can change at any time.

When is the best time to visit Kenya?

January to March is usually hot and dry and great for wildlife viewing. Conditions can often be dry and dusty at this time of year and animals often congregate near water-holes, meaning excellent wildlife viewing.

April to May can be wet and muddy and this is the period of the 'long rains'. Many safari camps close during May when the long rains are at their height, as the tracks and roads get muddy and it may not be possible for the camp vehicles to take visitors on game drives.

June is usually green and lush after the rain. Many animals have their young at this time of year, to coincide with the better grazing from new grass following the rains.

July to August is cooler and good for the migration in the Masai Mara. July to September is when the great wildebeest migration moves into the Masai Mara. July to September is a busy time for safaris in Kenya.

September to October offers good weather and wildlife viewing in Kenya.

November and December sees the advent of the so-called 'short rains'.

Bear in mind that weather patterns vary and when rainfall in Kenya occurs, it often happens at night or early in the morning.

Ensure you bring some additional warm clothing for chilly early morning or evening game drives in Kenya.

Although Kenya is on the equator, you may be surprised at how cold it can get at night and in the early morning, especially in the higher locations!
