Ceylon Tea Trails

4000 feet up in Sri Lanka’s hill country, Ceylon Tea Trails consists of 4 large classic colonial bungalows, close to Castlereagh Lake in the so-called ‘Golden Valley of Tea’.

The bungalows were originally built for the British Tea Estate manager in the days of the Raj and have been restored to offer guests the unique experience of life on a working tea estate.

There are 20 rooms in total spread across the 4 bungalows which combine heritage style with modern amenities.

Tea Trails makes a good base for exploring. Hatton is only half an hour away, Nuwara Elya and hour and three quarters and Kandy two hours.

What’s so Special?

Ceylon Tea Trails is a place to linger and take in the atmosphere of the hill country, staying somewhere which feels very unlike a “hotel”.

Wake up to the sound of bird calls and watch the mist rise over the lake, while shafts of sunlight streak through - it's a new day!

Visit a tea factory, enjoy the tropical gardens, walk between the bungalows or make excursions to the nearby sights.

Each of the four bungalows is different. Summerville with an air of a country cottage, Castlereagh with an eclectic style of its own, the high colonial Tientsin; one of the first planter's residences to be built in Ceylon and the more modern Norwood; abounding with 60's character.

Summerville and Castlereagh are situated opposite each other on the shores of the Castlereagh lake, Norwood is at the other end of the valley about 15 minutes away by car and Tientsin is about 30 minutes away in the next valley.

Each house comes with its own manager, chef, butler and houseboys and from 4 to 6 luxurious Master Suites, Garden Suites and Luxury Rooms. You can book a room or the entire bungalow.

Follow the Tea Trail from one unique bungalow to the next, staying a night or two at each or just laze in one.

Master Suites have a separate living room, Garden Suites offer verandahs looking out onto private gardens and Luxury Rooms have lots of character.

Each large and sprawling plantation bungalow has many sitting areas, old wooden desks to write postcards with real stamps and not just email.

Room highlights include the spacious bedrooms, smooth weathered teak floors, warm clay tiles, four-poster beds, crisp white sheets, silk cushions, regency stripped footstools, and log fires ideal on cool winter nights. En-suite bathrooms are also very elegant.

Dining

Long teak tables and chairs in old gold, moonlight through the window gently glows in the room, filled with the light of candles!

Tea Trails offer fine cuisine, Sri Lankan classics, seafood grills, fresh tropical fruit, rich chocolate cakes, the finest wines and vegetables from organic plots all served formally or al-fresco.

Meals, wines and spirits included in your rate, so there are no bills to sign.

A great way to enjoy the afternoon is with tea on the lawn; Dundee cake, scones, strawberries and cream, perfect!
