Nestled between a deserted Indian Ocean beach and Rekawa Lagoon, Buckingham Place offers a spectacular location just 12km south of Tangalle.
Buckingham Place is the labour of love of Nick Buckingham whose light-hearted and playful touch lends a cosy and homely feel to the 12 Suites and Bedrooms which all overlook Rekawa Lagoon.
The remote, tranquil location is 25 minutes from the nearest towns of Ranna and Tangalle.
Rekawa’s stunning beach is a gem, whilst the lagoon harbours magnificent birdlife. 3 major National Parks are easily reached for day trips, and dolphin and whale watching are very popular excursions.
Many guests choose to stay here for the mix of escapism and access to excursions (Notably the wildlife, steam train to Ella or a visit to Galle).
The abundant birdlife can be watched from the privacy of your balcony or veranda or by venturing onto the lagoon in a hotel kayak.
What’s so Special?
A beautiful, empty rugged beach, a sleepy village atmosphere and Rekawa’s very own bird and wildlife sanctuary combine relaxation with discovery and a taste of local culture.
Bear in mind
The beach is about 2-minute walk from the gate of the hotel.
Swimming is not advised within the immediate vicinity of the hotel but there is a nearby rock pool (about 15-minute walk), and much safer beaches are easily accessed by Tuk Tuk.
There is also the hotel pool of course for cooling down in.
Buckingham Place is a tranquil resort, well-suited for couples. Only children older than 7 years are permitted.
A suite can accommodate one extra bed in an air-conditioned annex, and a large bedroom can fit 2 additional beds.
With unusually generous proportions and 6 different floor layouts, all suites and bedrooms have been designed with sensitive flair. All harmonise well with the breath-taking natural environment and contribute significantly to the uniqueness of the hotel.
Rooms at Buckingham Place differ according to the view, features such as open-air bathrooms or the location.
Rooms are bright & airy with smooth & cool cement floors, white washed walls and soft seating. Large (6ft x 6ft 6”) Double Beds are a nice feature.
Bathrooms feature rain showers and bathtubs (no separate bath in First Floor Suites).
Bedrooms
There are 5 Bedrooms to choose from.
Kandekoratuwa & Mallithangahawatta
These two spacious, elevated and detached - ground floor double-entrance bedrooms enjoy lagoon views both from the bedroom and the pergola-shaded balcony.
The bright, spacious full bathrooms include bathtub and separate Rainforest shower above which are large skylights. Satellite TV is installed in both bedrooms but is removable upon request.
Kassipu Junction, Hinchi Mama House & Three More Days
Three extra-large, ground level detached bedrooms enjoy lagoon views both from the bedroom and a pergola-shaded veranda. Each has a bright and spacious full bathroom which includes Rainforest shower and bathtub with large skylights overhead.
A unique central skylight in the bedrooms produces a subtle shaft of natural light and a gentle wake up - tempting occupants to laze in bed and gaze at the spectacle!
All three bedrooms are large enough to accommodate up to two extra single beds for accompanying guests (subject to prior arrangement). There is no TV in these bedrooms.

Suites
There are 7 Suites to choose from.
The Presidential & Kandy Kumaraya
Two extra-large first floor suites share superior lagoon views from a long balcony which is partly shaded by pergolas either side. Each suite enjoys an additional view from its private side balcony, and both suites come with a large, airy, Rainforest shower bathroom (without bathtub). Satellite TV is installed in both suites but is removable upon request.
Thambapani Sunset & Kandy Kumari
Beneath The Presidential & Kandy Kumaraya are two huge ground floor suites. Both share superb lagoon views from a long veranda to the front and each suite is blessed with a vast and full bathroom with bathtub and open pergola Rainforest shower.
These suites feature a small, air-conditioned annex/side room into which can be installed an extra single bed for an accompanying guest if so required (prior arrangement essential). Satellite TV is installed in both suites but is removable upon request.
The Tree House
This popular detached and elevated ground floor suite is in a very peaceful position. It features include a mature coconut tree growing in the centre of the open-air Rainforest shower/bathtub bathroom plus, a bright and very spacious bedroom with lagoon views both from the balcony and the bed!
Satellite TV is installed in this suite but is removable upon request.
Rekawa East & Rekawa West
Secluded and low level, these two superior view suites provide occupants with a separate luggage room, own shaded veranda to the front and an open pergola Rainforest shower with lagoon views from the large bathtub bathroom.
These outstanding suites are the most obvious and popular choice of honeymooners, birdwatchers or those seeking secluded sanctuary. An extra single bed can be accommodated in the luggage room although this small extra room is without air-conditioning (freestanding fan is available). Neither suite has a TV.

Dining
The open-air Pavilion offers fusion and traditional Sri Lankan cuisine with some good old fashioned favourites - all on one, delicious, day-long menu that changes each day over five days.
The ‘signature’ Big Village Breakfast is available to order all day as are snacks, picnics and pots of freshly ground ‘French Press’ Sri Lankan coffee.
‘Planters Five’ is a selection of fine connoisseur teas, which will take you right through your day in the worlds No1 tea country!
All meals are a-la-carte, cooked to order, there are no buffets. Evenings are characterised by relaxed jazz atmosphere.
Facilities
Rekawa Beach is breathtakingly beautiful and virtually deserted. Sea bathing is not advised within the immediate vicinity of the hotel but a nearby rock pool (about 15 minutes on foot) and much safer beaches are easily accessed by Tuk Tuk.
For cooling off under the sun the modest hotel pool is adequate for most and, not overly challenging!
