Posada Amazonas is a simple 30-bedroom rainforest lodge in Peru’s Amazon, perfect for a first taste of the wonders of Peru’s Amazon.

The lodge offers outstanding opportunities to see Amazonian wildlife, with packages ranging from 2 to 6 nights.

The lodge consists of 30 spacious en-suite rooms, all with hot water and mosquito nets and set in 5 separate buildings, each connected by raised boardwalks.

Wild monkeys and birds are often visible from the signature windowless verandas, which also provide excellent ventilation.

Premium Rooms are a big step up in standard – more spacious, with hardwood floors, in-room charging outlets and Internet access.

Buildings are crafted in keeping with the natural surroundings and constructed from wood, palm fronds and clay.

Posada Amazonas contains a wellness and holistic center for massages and aromatherapy.

What's so Special?

Kayak in the Amazon, climb 30-metre trees in the footsteps of the Macaw researchers, hike through the rainforest, spot dozens of colourful parrots at a clay lick, enjoy a night walk - choose a package to suit your interests and activity level.

Bear in Mind

Posada Amazonas Lodge is reached by a 45-minute boat ride from the town of Puerto Maldonado.

Posada Amazonas is situated next to the Tambopata National Reserve and is owned by the indigenous Ese-Eja community of Infierno and managed in partnership with a local company.

Electricity isn’t available in the Classic rooms at all, and only until 10 pm in Superior Rooms. Numerous kerosene lamps and candles provide in-room lighting.

This 3 day 2 night program is for those looking for a short stay in the Amazon.

Visit an ethnobotanical centre run by a native community, an oxbow lake and a canopy tower amongst other activities.

Day 1: Puerto Maldonado - Posada Amazonas

Fly from Cusco or Lima to Puerto Maldonado.

On arrival a guide will welcome you at the airport and drive you ten minutes to the Puerto Maldonado HQ.

While enjoying your first taste of the forest in the gardens you will need to to pack only the necessary gear for your next few days and leave the rest at a safe deposit.

Transfer from Puerto Maldonado HQ the 20 km to Tambopata River Port, entering the Native Community of Infierno.

From here board the boat to Posada Amazonas, a 45 minute boat ride into the Primary Forest Private Reserve.

On arrival, the lodge manager will welcome you and brief you with important navigation and security tips.

From here a 20-minute walk from Posada Amazonas leads to the 30-metre scaffolding canopy tower.

From atop there are spectacular views of the vast expanses of standing forest cut by the winding Tambopata River.

A daily presentation on the Infierno ecotourism project is available every night from a staff member.

Overnight at Posada Amazonas. All meals included.

Day 2: Amazon Activities

Tres Chimbadas is 30 minutes by boat followed by a 45 minute walk from Posada Amazonas.

Explore the lake by catamaran, searching for the resident family of nine giant river otters (seen by 60% of visitors) and other lakeside wildlife such as caiman, hoatzin and horned screamers.

Otters are most active from dawn to eight or nine AM.

A parrot clay lick is only a 20 minute walk away from the lodge.

From a blind located about 20 metres away you will see dozens of parrots and parakeets descend on most clear mornings to ingest the clay by the river bank.

Species such as Mealy and Yellow-headed Amazon, Blue-headed Parrot and Dusky headed Parakeet are usually seen here.

The clay lick is active at dawn, during the late mornings and mid-afternoons.

A twenty minute boat journey downriver leads to a trail designed by the staff of the Centro Ñape.

The Centro Ñape is a communal organization that produces medicines out of forest plants and administers them to patients who choose their little clinic.

They have put together a trail which explains the different medicinal (and other) uses of selected plants.

You will also have the option of hiking out at night, when most of the mammals are active but rarely seen.

Much easier to find are frogs with shapes and sounds as bizarre as their natural histories.

Overnight at Posada Amazonas. All meals included.

Day 3: Posada Amazonas - Puerto Maldonado

After breakfast, transfer from Posada Amazonas to Puerto Maldonado Airport for your scheduled flight back to Cusco or Lima.

Fly back to Cusco or Lima.

Secondary Forest can be created in a number of ways, from degraded forest recovering from selective logging, to areas cleared by slash-and-burn agriculture that have been reclaimed by forest.

Generally, secondary forest is characterized by a less developed canopy structure and smaller trees.

This means a focus on Barred Antshrike, Short-tailed Pygmy Tyrant, Streaked Flycatcher, Boat-billed Flycatcher, Solitary Black Cacique, Gray-fronted Dove, Ruddy Ground Dove amongst others.

After dinner venture out near the lodge to spot-light Pauraque, Tawny-bellied Screech-Owl, Great Potoo, Long tailed Potoo, Ocellated Poorwill and if we are lucky a Mottled Owl or Crested Owl.
