Situated in the Barkhor area in the historic heart of old Lhasa, House of Shambhala is a traditional Tibetan style house lovingly restored and converted into a boutique hotel in Lhasa.
With just 9 unique bedrooms, a stay at House of Shambhala is to step back into the kind of place a nobleman in Lhasa might have lived in in centuries gone by.
Bedrooms are painted in gold, saffron, crimson, or cinnamon, and filled with hand-painted antiques, meditation chairs, yoga mats, furry white rugs, and exquisite Buddhist paintings.
Beds are on raised traditional Chinese-style platforms, adding to the heritage feel to the rooms.
The restaurant has great food, a mixture of Indian, Tibetan, Chinese and Oriental with absolutely stunning tikka. Surprisingly the yak meat is delicious and well worth trying.
What’s so Special?
It’s a really atmospheric place to stay. The stone walls and wooden floors create a medieval (but very comfortable) ambience, a world away from the standard tourist of business hotel in Lhasa.
Bear in mind
The staff are all friendly and very willing, although their understanding of English is less than perfect, but this is Lhasa after all!
House of Shambhala is not for everyone. This is a local-style hotel, full of character but not with the comforts and amenities of international standard hotels.
