Bird Island

Simplicity is the keyword at Bird Island Lodge, an island escape far removed from the typical luxury hotel in the Indian Ocean.

Bird Island has just the one small boutique hotel with 24 simple bungalows nestled amongst the coconut palms, with five kilometres of the some of the best beaches in the world right on the doorstep.

Bird Island offers barefoot relaxation and with just 30 staff, there are never more than 80 people on the island.

Food is fresh, wholesome and served buffet style. Fresh fish can be found on the menu every day together with organic home-grown fruit and vegetables.

Many guests come here for the birdlife and nature. Nick Savy and Robbie, the full-time Conservation Officer are involved in ongoing conservation efforts with Hawksbill turtles and white tailed tropic birds in particular.

Each morning Robbie leads a nature walk for guests and many guests are lucky enough to see turtles laying or nests hatching. Hawksbills visit between October and February, with thousands of hatchlings born between February and May.

Green Turtles also lay throughout the year but are more common between June and September. The island is also home to free ranging giant Aldabran Tortoises.

Other activities include two-person kayaks, some excellent and safe snorkeling, some of the best Big Game Fishing in the Indian Ocean and nature boat cruises to view dolphin and whales.

What’s so Special?

The Savy family has shared their unique island lifestyle with guests for over 35 years and Bird Island is one of the most loved and treasured hotels in the Seychelles.

The island is small enough to be walked around in about an hour.

Bear in Mind

Bird Island is reached by a single daily 30-minute flight from Mahe.

Currently (2020), flights depart Mahe at 10:40, returning from Bird Island at 11:25.

The lodge has no TV, no phones, just plenty of birds, turtles and palpitatingly beautiful beaches.

The rooms also have no air-con - and there is no swimming pool.

There is Wi-Fi access now at Bird Island.

Chalets

Bird Island, Seychelles features an eco-lodge of 24 simple but comfortable individual chalets, nestled among the remaining coconut palms of the island's old plantation.

The chalets are dotted along the western coast of the island, overlooking the natural parkland and on to the turquoise clear waters.

Simplicity is the keyword at Bird Island Lodge, far removed from your standard over-priced and over-pampered luxury hotel.

Here, things are unpretentious but comfortable - No TV, no phones, just plenty of birds, turtles and palpitatingly beautiful beaches.

Facilities:

  • Spacious verandah
  • King sized bed (mosquito netting optional)
  • Room fan
  • Room safe
  • Corner lounge
  • 2 sofas which double as 2 single beds
  • Large shower (solar heated)
  • Hairdryer (available from reception)
  • Complimentary WIFI

Snorkelling

You can borrow all the gear you need, walk a few yards from the shore and begin your underwater exploration.

Straight off Hirondelle Beach, a 30 metres gentle swim and you will marvel at the brightly coloured coral heads and the many reef fish.

It's impossible to keep count of the number of interesting and unusual fish you will find.

This underwater activity makes for a great experience at Bird Island; protected by the reef, snorkelling is easy and safe.

Good to know

The best time for snorkelling is between October and April, when the sea is calm and clear.

During the South East winds the sea is not usually suitable for snorkelling as the snorkelling spots are exposed to the wind making the sea choppier and visibility poor.

Fortunately, swimming on the west coast in front of the Lodge is unaffected, as this part of the island is sheltered from the South Easterly winds during this time of year and the sea is usually fairly calm.

Snorkelling gear at Bird Island Lodge is complimentary. Just ask at reception.

Kayaking

For a little fun or some light exercise, enjoy some time in a two-person kayak - perfect for a slow paddle across the bay or a determined circumnavigation.

Kayaking is a fantastic way of getting close to the marine life in the surrounding waters, and also allows you to enjoy Bird Island's beautiful coastline.

Looking down into the clear blue shallows, you can follow the occasional turtle, octopus, stingray or watch the many colourful fish as they swim about the reef.

Kayaking can be enjoyed by everyone but before heading out, it is essential to have basic paddling skills for a safe, fun and injury free experience.

Nature Trails

After breakfast, why not head out for a walk on one of many nature trails and learn all about the flora and fauna - the nesting and courting habits of the birds, the Hawksbill turtles that visit between October and February and the thousands of hatchlings that race for the sea from December to March.

Tortoises & Turtles on Bird Island

With around 20 free roaming tortoises on the island you will never run short of these placid friendly creatures to observe.

The tortoises found on the island are mainly Giant Aldabra Tortoises, with Esmeralda being the oldest and heaviest of the bunch.

These ancient reptiles are mostly herbivores, feeding on grass, leaves, and various plants.

They tend to eat in the mornings and evenings when it is cooler and to rest in shaded areas during the warmer periods of the day.

If you are more fond of their cousins, the turtles, then you should look seaward and try out a bit of turtle spotting at Passe Coco.

Here, you will often find juvenile green turtles feeding on the thalassia sea beds. If you're lucky you may even get to swim with a few.

Which Airlines do you use?

We work with all the major airlines flying to the Seychelles.

Typically for the Seychelles we will use British Airways for direct flights.

There are currently twice-weekly flights from Heathrow (Wednesdays and Saturdays) direct to Mahe using the Dreamliner.

The flying time for direct flights is around 10 hours, making the Seychelles a little shorter flying time than going to South East Asia.

We also commonly use Emirates via Dubai, Qatar Airways via Doha and Etihad via Abu Dhabi. These all allow stopover options in the Arabian Gulf to create a multi-centre holiday.

Regional connections from across the UK are available.

Which Hotels do you use?

We're careful with our choice of resorts in the Seychelles, but we're guided by our customers also. If you have some preferred hotels, just let us know.

We specialise in boutique & luxury hotels and so we will often suggest some of our favourite smaller luxury hotels where we think these will be suitable.

Do I need a visa for the Seychelles?

If you're travelling on British Passports, no visa is required for stays of up to a month.

Please double check before travel however as visa requirements are subject to change at any time.
