Refugio Amazonas is a 32-bedroom lodge four hours from Puerto Maldonado airport, ideal for soft adventurers and for adventurous families visiting the Amazon.

Refugio Amazonas is located in a 200-hectare private reserve within the buffer zone of the Tambopata National Reserve.

8 rooms are located in four wings connected by raised boardwalks. All rooms are en-suite with hot water.

The lodge buildings are airy and constructed from traditional materials such as wood, palm fronds and clay.

This is a great Amazon lodge for families as there is a rainforest trail especially for children and a children’s playground.

Refugio Amazonas also has a wellness and holistic center for massages and aromatherapy.

What’s so Special?

Refugio Amazonas has a rainforest trail designed especially for children, the only one in the Peruvian Amazon.

Bear in Mind

Travellers to the Tambopata Research Center (TRC) also stop off at the Refugio on the way to and from the TRC.

The lodge is partnering with local families, who sustainably harvest Brazil nuts from the surrounding rainforest, to ensure that they share in the benefits of ecotourism.

This family program for kids focuses on both education and entertainment.

Refugio Amazonas has partnered with an educational NGO to set up two trails at Refugio Amazonas based on the story of a six year old girl living in the rain forest called Ania.

Kids are made to feel as if they are part of the story and usually learn how to value their relation with the environment. Adults are welcome to join, but can choose to do other activities.

Day 1: Puerto Madonado - Refugio Amazonas

Fly from Cusco or Lima to Puerto Maldonado.

On arrival a guide will welcome you at the airport and drive you ten minutes to the Puerto Maldonado HQ.

While enjoying your first taste of the forest in the gardens you will need to to pack only the necessary gear for your next few days and leave the rest at a safe deposit.

From here it's a 2.5 hour boat ride to Refugio Amazonas passing the Community of Infierno and the Tambopata National Reserve´s checkpoint and into the buffer zone of this 1.3 million hectare conservation unit.

On arrival the lodge manager will welcome you and brief you with important navigation and security tips.

After dinner, and as a prelude to the upcoming activities, head towards the circle of fire, following a series of burners lighting the path.

This is where Tawa, the ancient healer house is with all its instruments and magic potions and extracts prepared from plants of the forest.

Sit and listen to the guide relate the story "Ania and the Voice of the World" and learn about the story and characters - the starting point for the adventure that awaits in the coming days.

(Remember this is for the kids!).

Overnight Refugio Amazonas. All meals included.

Day 2: Canopy - Children's Rainforest - Night walk

After breakfast, a 30 minute walk from Refugio Amazonas leads to the 25 metre scaffolding canopy tower.

A bannistered staircase running through the middle provides safe access to the platforms above.

The tower has been built upon high ground, increasing your horizon of the primary rainforest extending out towards the Tambopata National Reserve.

After the tower, play the “game of seeds” and learn about the powers that the seeds of the forest have.

Together with the guide, learn how to collect seeds, which will help find special powers and seek the “Treasure of ANIA.”

After lunch, embark on an exciting journey designed for children ages 4 to 10 years.

Travel with the lodge guides on a challenging (but short) walk, following maps, solving riddles and finding clues that will lead to the "treasure of ANIA.”

The path includes a visit to the houses of ANIA and TAWA, the grandfather of the woods.

Searching for the “lost Brazil nut”, the city of ants and other fun games teaches children how people live in the rainforest and why it is so important.

After dinner, there is the option of hiking out at night, when most of the mammals are active but difficult to see.

Easier to find are frogs with shapes and sounds as bizarre as their natural histories.

Overnight Refugio Amazonas. All meals included.

Day 3: Oxbow Lake - Ethnobotanical Tour - Rainforest Tattoo - Caiman Search

Explore an oxbow lake by catamaran, searching for the resident family of nine giant river otters (seen by 60% of visitors) and other lakeside wildlife such as caiman, hoatzin and horned screamers.

You will also be rewarded with overhead sightings of macaws.

Along this trail you will find a variety of plants and trees that are used by the local population.

Learn about the medicinal (and other) uses of Ajo-Sacha, Yuca de Venado, Uña de Gato, Charcot-Sacha, Para-Para, among several others.

At the lodge prepare a paste from the fruit of huito and achiote to draw dark blue and red tattoos on yourselves - they last several days.

After dinner, head out to the river’s edge, scanning the shores with headlamps and flashlights to catch the red gleams of reflection from caiman eyes.

Overnight Refugio Amazonas. All meals included.

Day 4: Refugio Amazonas - Puerto Maldonado

After breakfast, transfer to Puerto Maldonado for your scheduled flight back to Cusco or Lima.

Fly to Cusco or Lima.

Explore the Tambopata for three nights - learn about the importance of Brazil nuts for the conservation of the rainforest, visit a parrot claylick and get a view of the rainforest canopy from a view tower.

Day 2: Amazon Adventure

Tres Chimbadas is 30 minutes by boat followed by a 45 minute walk from Posada Amazonas.

Explore the lake by catamaran, searching for the resident family of nine giant river otters (seen by 60% of visitors) and other lakeside wildlife such as caiman, hoatzin and horned screamers.

Otters are most active from dawn to eight or nine AM.

A 30 minute walk from Refugio Amazonas leads to the 25 metre scaffolding canopy tower.

From atop there are spectacular views of the vast expanses of standing forest cut by the winding Tambopata River.

From here views of mixed species canopy flocks as well as toucans, macaws and raptors are likely.

After lunch, 5 minutes downriver from the lodge lies a farm owned and managed by charismatic Don Manuel from the neighbouring community of Condenado.

He grows a variety of popular and little known Amazonian crops - just about every plant and tree you see serves a purpose.

Along this trail you will find a variety of plants and trees that are used by the local population.

Learn about the medicinal (and other) uses of Ajo-Sacha, Yuca de Venado, Uña de Gato, Charcot-Sacha, Para-Para, among several others.

After dinner, nightly lectures are prepared by the staff of Refugio Amazonas covering conservation threats and opportunities and projects in the Tambopata National Reserve.

Overnight Refugio Amazonas. All meals included.

Day 3: Amazon Adventure

After breakfast, transfer by boat to Chuncho Clay Lick.

Two hours from Refugio Amazonas, deep in the Tambopata National Reserve is the Chuncho claylick, offering the chance to see dozens of large macaws feeding on the special sodium rich clays of the riverbank.

The Chuncho claylick probably attracts more large macaws than any other claylick in the world and the sight of dozens of macaws taking flight is truly unforgettable.

After lunch and just a few minutes hike from the lodge is a beautiful old growth patch of Brazil Nut forest that has been harvested for decades (if not centuries).

Learn about the whole process of the rainforest's only sustainably harvested product from collection through transportation to drying.

Twenty minutes walk from Refugio Amazonas is a peccary clay lick.

Wild rainforest pigs show up in herds of five to twenty individuals to eat clay in the late morning.

Chances of spotting them are around 15%, but well worth the short hike. Other wildlife which shows up includes deer, guan and parakeets.

After dinner there is the option of hiking out at night, when most of the mammals are active but difficult to see.

Easier to find are frogs with shapes and sounds as bizarre as their natural histories.

Overnight Refugio Amazonas. All meals included.
