Delfin I offers luxury river cruises on the Amazon, combining grace and comfort in a unique modern Amazon river cruiser.

The Delfin I cruises the Amazon’s northern reaches in Peru in the Pacaya Samiria Reserve, offering superb opportunities for wildlife viewing and a really great experience of the Amazon.

Delfin’s four cabins each have private terraces, two of them with whirlpool baths, a rather indulgent way to watch life go by on the Amazon.

Cruising the Pacaya Samiria Reserve in Peru’s Amazon, Delfin I operates 3, 4 and 7 night Amazon River cruises.

Delfin I has an understated elegance on board and feature a great observation deck, sophisticated cuisine, an ‘entertainment’ centre and an open bar.

What’s so Special?

Delfin I is one of the very best luxury boutique ships to ever cruise the Amazon River.

The Delfin feature artwork by the women of Puerto Miguel Community, an income for local women which helps provide education for local children.

Delfin’s four cabins each have private terraces, two of them with whirlpool baths, a rather indulgent way to watch life go by on the Amazon.

Deluxe Suites

The two Deluxe Suites on Delfin I are located on the main deck.

The suites are very spacious (33.5 sq. m) for a river cruiser and feature King-size beds, (or separate twins if preferred).

Suites have wrap-around 180° panoramic windows from floor to ceiling, and include in-suite seating areas with sofa beds (which can be converted into additional single beds). Beds feature fine Peruvian linens.

Spacious private terraces are almost as large as the cabins themselves and feature cold water whirlpool baths.

Other features in Deluxe Suites include environmentally friendly amenities, silent air-con units, hot water, hairdryers, safes and internal communications system.

Master Suites

The Master Suites (31.5 sq. m) are located on the second deck and are slightly smaller than the Deluxe Suites but also feature private terraces, albeit without whirlpool baths.

These suites share the same amenities as the Deluxe Suites including panoramic floor to ceiling windows.

Delfin I offers 4 and 5 day Amazon Cruise itineraries from Iquitos.

Day 1: Iquitos – Nauta – Amazon Cruise

On arrival in Iquitos you will be met and transferred by private vehicle to Nauta, 95 km away. Nauta is literally the “end of the road” where you will board the Delfin.

After check-in and formalities, enjoy some time on the Observation Deck with a cocktail if you wish as the on board naturalist provides an overview of the journey – especially the wildlife and natural features to keep your eye out for.

After dinner you will be invited to the third deck to enjoy some stargazing whilst the Delphin cruises on into the depths of the Amazon.

Overnight Delfin I. All meals & activities included.

Day 2: Amazon River Cruise

On the first morning, we recommend getting up early to appreciate one of the most interesting zones in the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve, whilst the wildlife is at its most abundant and active.

Enjoy a walk along the Fundo Casual jungle trail deep into the rainforest on terra firme (non-flooded forest) where your guide will point out the wildlife and vegetation of the Amazon.

In the afternoon, Delfin I cruises along the Yanayacu and Pucate Rivers, exploring creeks and lagoons along the route.

This is one of the best-preserved and most well-protected zones of the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve.

Your guide will explain the amazing biodiversity of this region of the Amazon. If you want to enjoy some time closer to the Amazon, take out one of the paddle boards or even enjoy a swim in the river.

Overnight Delfin I. All meals & activities included.

Day 3: Amazon River Cruise

Begin the morning with an adventurous journey to visit to a private reserve where there are 8 hanging bridges high up in the rainforest canopy.

To get there, walk through primary forest and paddle slowly through tranquil Tahuampa Lake, a black water lagoon with giant arapaima fish leap out of the water to breathe the crisp dawn air.

The suspension bridges offer a glimpse into life in the treetops, a superb way to experience this part of the Amazon.

After lunch, explore Nauta Caño, a small creek and tributary with the chance to enjoy some kayaking or go fishing for piranha if you wish.

As night approaches, embark on a night safari with your guide in search of caiman alligators and night birds.

Overnight Delfin I. All meals & activities included.

Day 4: Amazon Cruise

Visit the community of San Francisco to meet locals who have called Amazonia their home for generations.

Visit a school and stop by an amazing arts & craft market.

The ship docks back at Nauta and you will be transferred back to Iquitos.

On the way back to the airport, visit the Rescue & Rehabilitation Centre of River Mammals (ACOBIA) with the chance to meet baby manatees and learn about these wonderful and docile creatures.

You will be assisted for check-in at the airport for your onward flight.

Five Day Cruise additional day:

Five day cruises include an additional day (on Day 4) as below:

Today explore the tributaries along the Yarapa River.

Enjoy some easy kayaking and experience the sights and sounds of the Amazon from river level.

In the afternoon visit Piraña Caño Creek, a lovely creek which leads to a lagoon.

This is an ideal place to spend the afternoon in search of birds and playful monkeys accompanied by the naturalist guide.

Overnight Delfin I. All meals & activities included.

Dining

The Dining Room is located on the second deck.

Dining on the Delfin I offers an unrivalled level of sophistication for an Amazon Cruise and the luxury of tasting simple and natural products.

Peruvian cuisine is considered one of the worlds finest and reflects the country’s cultural diversity.

The Amazons fresh ingredients and the gentle blend of immigrant traditions have created one of the world´s most unique and delicious cuisines.

Delfin I can accommodate special dietary requests, but please let us know at least 30 days in advance so we can advise the Delfin’s chef.

Open Observation Deck

On the top deck of Delfin I is the Observation Deck, a casually elegant setting and a welcoming and peaceful environment from which to enjoy the Amazon.

The deck has soft, large sofas and is the perfect spot for star-gazing at night.

Facilities

Delfin I has an entertainment centre, a range of DVDs and reading material about the Amazon, an Xcube (for children or adults!) and a open bar offering a variety of international and local drinks. Coffee and tea is always available.

Delfin I has an open bridge policy, so guests are welcome to learn about the navigation systems and spend time with the driving captain at any time.

Nature walks & explorations

Due to the conditions of the wet and humid rainforest, Delfin provides waterproof rubber boot rentals at no additional cost.

Before each outing the boots are provided, to be returned for cleaning after each excursion. Rain ponchos are also provided.

Community visits

There are many young children and families in communities who have various needs in the absence of their own resources, so any help is considered very useful. Kids love shirts (T-shirts), pencils, notebooks, and toys.

Itineraries

Itineraries are subject to change due to weather conditions at certain times of the year.

The water levels of the rivers also vary from time to time, as well as the hours of sailing.

Excursions may be modified at the discretion of the Delfin crew.

Climate

The weather in Iquitos is warm and humid and the temperature varies between 33 and 21 °C.

The rainy (high water) season is from November to May and the dry (low water) season from June to October.

Each season boasts dramatic difference in plants, animals, and weather.

Clothing

Pack light and fresh pieces, blouses, long-sleeved shirts, swimwear, shoes with soft rubber sole for the boat (rubber boots and rain ponchos are provided), cardigan or long-sleeved shirts, wind resistant jackets.

The days are hot and humid while the night breeze is fresh.

Insects & Mosquitoes

Many people recommend taking Vitamin B or B-15 a few days before arrival in the jungle. These vitamins are said to be the best natural repellent against insect bites.

Of course don’t forget to bring conventional repellent and cream for bites.

Other items

We suggest bringing sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, binoculars (very important for enjoying the fauna and flora - preferably 1 set per person), camera, and extra batteries.

Connectivity

There is no Wi-Fi Internet or phone signal coverage on Delfin Cruises.

Tips

Tips for both the crew and the guides are not included and are expected, as is customary on cruises around the world.

Tips are distributed equally between your entire vessel’s crew. $30 per person per day is recommended by the cruise operator.

The Amazon

The Amazon Rainforest constitutes over half of the world’s remaining rainforest, and the Amazon River is the life force of this amazing ecosystem.

Rising in the Peruvian Andes, the Amazon winds its way east over the northern half of South America towards the Atlantic, carrying more water than the next 10 largest rivers combined.

Recent studies also claim that the Amazon River is actually longer than the Nile by 65 miles, with the source of the Amazon said to be at Mount Mismi in Arequipa, in southern Peru.

Flora and Fauna

More than a third of all living species are found in the Amazon Basin, constituting the largest collection of living plant and animal species on Earth.

As the largest tract of tropical rainforest in the Americas, the Amazonian rainforest boasts unparalleled biodiversity.

One in five of all bird species recorded live in this extraordinary habitat and it has been estimated that many hundreds of million species may yet to be discovered.

The Amazon also contains over 3,000 species of fresh water fish, the largest number in a single area in the world.

Some species are huge, the Paiche for example can grow up to 16 feet in length!

Dolphins too, both grey and the rare pink dolphin, are found in the Amazon’s tributaries and main rivers.

Local Communities

Despite the rural atmosphere, there are many pockets of civilization within the Amazon.

In addition to plants and animals, the Amazon Basin includes a diversity of traditional inhabitants, communities which have been established in the rainforest for thousands of years and whose lifestyles and customs are well adapted to the surroundings.

Delfin Cruises has always pioneered interaction with local communities and the villagers who live within the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve.

Through partnerships and humanitarian projects, Delfin Cruises has helped these communities continue to develop.

Local people’s work-day is mostly occupied by subsistence activities such as fishing, small-scale agriculture, gathering and hunting.

As part of the cruise on Delfin a visit to a school is included and it is also possible to buy local artworks on board.
