West Bengal - Top Places to Visit

West Bengal is one of India's most varied states when you consider it encompasses a huge area, from sweltering Calcutta to the peaks of the Himalayas.
With almost 100 million people, West Bengal has a considerably higher population than the UK and has a reputation.
Calcutta
The centre of West Bengali culture, Calcutta has a reputation for producing great writers, artists and business people.
Discover the British colonial architecture, take a yellow taxi ride around town, visit a Kali Temple, admire Howrah Bridge and explore the art galleries.
Darjeeling
In the foothills of the Himalaya's Darjeeling is at the other extreme of West Bengal, geographically and metaphorically.
Gaze across to the Himalayas and Kanchenjunga, the world's third highest peak, ride on the Toy Train, visit tea plantations, see Snow Leopards in Darjeeling zoo and explore the craft shops which line the main street.
The active may want to enjoy a wonderful day trek to a Himalayan viewpoint.
The Sundarbans
The Sundarbans is a UNESCO World Heritage site, protecting some of the world's most important tidal mangrove forests.
The Sundarbans is also home to wild Royal Bengal Tigers, estimated to be around 170 in total.
The area is easily explored by boat on an overnight trip from Calcutta.
Kalimpong
Kalimpong is a Hill Station situated across a ridge in the Himalayan foothills and is a great place to get a flavour of Buddhist culture and to visit Tibetan monasteries.
This area was settled by Nepalis during British rule and the Nepali influence is very evident to this day.
