Day 1: UK - Dominican Republic

Fly UK to Santo Domingo, upon arrival you will be met and transferred to your hotel by private car.

Overnight Santo Domingo.

Day 2: Santo Domingo

Today, you will get to know America’s first European city.

Here, the first cathedral of the New World was built, the first governor resided, the first bishop was ordained and the first hospital was opened.

The lively mega-city offers an incommensurate array of cultural and in particular architectural sights unlike anywhere else on Hispaniola.

You will visit the “Zona Colonial”, the historical city centre that was declared a world heritage site by UNESCO.

During the walking tour, you will see the palace of Diego Columbus, the palace of the governor, the cathedral and the “Parque de Colón” with its bronze monument of Christopher Columbus.

In the afternoon you visit the places of interest outside the colonial city.

You’ll take a ride to the east side of the city to the famous light tower “Faro a Colón”, a big Mausoleum rumored to hold the remains of Columbus.

You will visit the cave system “Los Tres Ojos” with subterranean courses of rivers and stalactite caves.

Before reaching the ocean promenade through the boulevard “27 de Febrero”, you will stop at the National Palace.

Day 3: Santo Domingo - Jarabacoa

Today you head down the “Autopista Duarte” through rural areas dominated by intensive farming.

Stop at the many stalls along the roadside to taste the local tropical fruits. Citrus plantations spread across high valleys.

Villa Altagracia is a large market with stands that sell pottery and wickerwork.

Soon the slopes are going uphill the mountains of the Cordillera Central, also knows as the Dominican Alps, where many locals spend their summer holidays.

Jarabacoa is located at 600 metres above sea level and is surrounded by pine forests, rivers, mountains and valleys of the rivers “Rio Yaque del Norte” and “Rio Jimenoa”.

Because of the cool temperatures all year round, the area is a Mecca for hikers and nature lovers.

A lot of adventurous sports are offered here. The fertile area is also well-known for its flower plantations and horse breeding.

You will visit charming Jarabacoa and get to see the coffee factory “Monte Alto”, where you will be told everything about growing and processing coffee beans.

Of course there will also be a coffee degustation afterwards. After a short drive and a short hike you will visit the waterfall "Salto Baiguate” which is about 30 metres high.

Day 4: Jarabacoa – Cap Haitien

Today the road takes you to the lush Cibao Valley, the agricultural treasure of the island.

Coffee, cocoa, tobacco, rice and bananas are grown. This are was already heavily colonized by the time of the Taíno Indians.

You will pass by the city of Santiago de los Caballeros, the richest city in the country.

It is the economic center and second largest city in the Dominican Republic.

Visit the tobacco fields of the country close to Villa Gonzalez.

In the passed few years the Dominican Republic has passed the neighboring island of Cuba respecting cultivation and processing of tobacco.

Afterwards you will continue your trip through Ouanaminthe to the neighbouring country Haiti.

Day 5: Haitien - Milot - Cap Haitien

In the early morning you will leave to Milot to visit the famous Citadelle Laferrire by Henri Christophe (UNESCO World Heritage Site).

The ship-shaped fort is located at 950 metress above sea level and measures approximately 9,000 square metres.

 

Enjoy the breath-taking views of the surrounding hilly landscape and on clear days you might even be able to see all the way to the sea.

You will also visit the Palace of Sans-Souci, which was the former residence of King Henri Christophe.

Afterwards a typical lunch awaits you.

Day 6: Cap Haitien – Monte Cristi

Today you will explore the main attractions of Cap Haitien during a guided city tour.

Bevore heading back to the neighboring country you stop to visit the “Fort Liberté“ just before the border.

This is one of the oldest towns founded, which goes back to the year 1578.

The Indians and Spaniards called it Bayaha until the expulsion in 1804 where the French gave it the name of Fort-Dauphin.

A trip to Monte Cristi is like traveling back in time. The famous English pirate Sir Francis Drake used this region to hide his ships from the Spanish.

Day 7:  Monte Cristi – Puerto Plata

In the early morning you will climb the town’s landmark, the mountain El Morro.

Tranfer to Puerto Plata, a city known for its beautiful Victorian styled wooden houses, which are located around the central park and the 800 metre high mountain "Isabel de Torres."

The sugar cane imported by Christopher Columbus was first planted in Puerto Plata and, until a few years ago, formed the economic backbone of the city.

You will visit the oldest preserved fort: Fort San Felipe. The fort has been built in 1577 to prevent attacks coming from the sea.

Afterwards you will visit the central park of Puerto Plata with its colored Victorian wood houses.

Overnight Puerto Plata. Breakfast in Monte Cristi and All-Inclusive in Puero Plata.

Day 8: Puerto Plata – Las Terrenas

After breakfast you will take a ride with the only cable car up the 800 metres high mountain "Isabel de Torres" from where you can enjoy a fantastic view over the city.

Today the road leads along the northern coast to Rio San Juan. This is one of the country’s most beautiful towns, with colourful houses, little shops and cafeterias.

Rio San Juan is also famous for its lagoon “Laguna Gri Gri”, a canal edged with mangroves which leads into the ocean.

You will reach Cabrera, a small but beautiful town with an inviting central square.

On the way you will pass some beautiful pristine beaches, where you will have the opportunity to go for a swim.

After Cabrera we stop at “Laguna Dudu”. The park “Laguna Dudu” consists of the two cenotes “Laguna Dudu” and “Pozo de los Caballos”, the horse fountain. The two cenotes are connected with an underwater tunnel.

From here we continue to Las Terrenas, a tropical paradise with secluded beaches, clear mountain rivers, sheer cliffs and an enormous bird sanctuary.

Las Terrenas is the busy centre of the peninsula’s northern coast.

Here, you can still feel the magic of the Caribbean. The beach is natural and unspoiled, and you may even stumble over some coconuts.

Day 9: Las Terrenas - Cascade El Limón

Today you hike to the highest waterfall in the Peninsula of Samaná.

It has a height of about 50 metres and is surrounded by lush vegetation. 

After a long swim break you head back to Las Terrenas.

During the afternoon you will have free time to relax at the beach.

Days 10: Las Terrenas

Day at leisure.

Day 11: Las Terrenas - Santo Domingo - UK

Road transfer to Santo Domingo Airport to catch your overnight flight back to the UK.
