The Great Wall of China is the longest man-made structure in the world.

The 2.5-km stretch of the Wall allows you to walk along its storied length for over an hour and visit twenty-two watchtowers, should you so choose.

Also enjoy a cable car ride to the top.

Enjoy lunch in a local restaurant.

On the way back, pay a visit to this art district of Beijing where Maoist slogans still adorn the walls, to experience a different side of Beijing.

Once a complex that manufactured electronics, Factory Number 798 was divided, rented out, and converted into galleries, artist studios, design companies, restaurants and bars at the turn of the 20th century.

Overnight Beijing. Breakfast included.

Day 5: Beijing - Shanghai

This tranquil park where the Temple of Heaven is located is a favourite stop for visitors to Beijing, as it provides an authentic look into local life - it's a great place to people watch.

The grounds consist of a sequence of buildings and altars set in beautiful groves of cypress trees.

Day 6: Shanghai

Enjoy a full day tour of Shanghai, visiting some of the most important landmarks and locations in Shanghai, including the Jade Buddha Temple, the Bund, Yu Yuan Gardens, Shanghai Old Street, the French Concession and Xintiandi.

The Jade Buddha Temple is an active temple, with 70 resident monks, and the centerpiece is a sitting Buddha carved out of white jade and encrusted with jewels, measuring over two meters tall and rumored to weigh over 1000 kilograms.

From the Jade Buddha, head over to the Yu Yuan Gardens, a classic creation of the Ming Dynasty. Nearby is Shanghai Old Street which had its origins in the Qing Dynasty.

After a Shanghainese lunch at a local restaurant, visit the Bund, Shanghai's waterfront, known for its grand display of colonial-era architecture and the wonderful views of both sides of the Huangpu River.

Visit Xintiandi, a stylish nightlife district with many boutiques, pubs, and restaurants and on to Shanghai's Art District. Xintiandi is a good place to return to for dinner this evening.

Finally visit the Shikumen Open House Museum, a well-preserved Shikumen house from the 1920's that displays furniture and articles for daily use during that time.

Day 7: Shanghai

Today enjoy a full day in Suzhou. You will be collected from your hotel by your driver and guide for a private excursion to Suzhou, one of China's famous water towns.

Visit the Garden of the Master of the Nets, the smallest of the Suzhou residential gardens, yet the most impressive because of its use of space and the feeling of tranquility and harmony that it instills on visitors.

After lunch visit the  Suzhou Institute of Embroidery and see some of the most valuable pieces of embroidery
ever made, including several priceless court gowns.

Finally visit the superb Suzhou Museum, itself an architectural masterpiece, containing over 15,000 ancient pieces in its collection, including paintings, ceramics & calligraphy.

Overnight: Shanghai

Day 8: Shanghai to Hangzhou

Transfer to the railway station for your high-speed train to Hangzhou, where you will be met to begin your tour of Hangzhou.

Visit Lingyin Temple, founded in 328 AD and one of the largest Buddhist temples in China.

Between the 10th and 14th centuries, monks carved over three hundred Buddha statues into the peak of the mountain in front of the temple.

By West Lake, see tea leaves at various stages of being processed; cut, sorted and dried, before being packaged to be shipped and sold as one of China’s finest green teas.

Enjoy lunch before taking a cruise on beautiful West Lake, passing numerous temples, pagodas, pavilions, gardens, islands, and ornamental trees on this lake which has inspired artists and landscape designers over the centuries.

Overnight Hangzhou. Breakfast included.

Day 9: Hangzhou - Huangshan

Day 10: Huangshan - Hongkun - Yellow Mountain

This morning make an excursion to Hongkun Ancient Village, a UNESCO site preserving Ming and Qing style residences.

Enjoy lunch in the village before transferring to the foot of Yellow Mountain from where you will catch a Cable Car to the higher trails. From the top Cable Car Station it's an easy 45-minute walk to your accommodation for the night.

Yellow Mountain (Mount Huangshan) is set amidst a spectacular landscape of pines, stone pillars and soaring peaks through which various trails wind.

Your accommodation for the night is in a hotel near the top, with easy access to the trails and sunrise spots.

The evening time can be a beautiful time to explore the trails which are generally quiet at this time of day.

Overnight Yellow Mountain. Breakfast & lunch included.

Day 11: Yellow Mountain (Mount Huangshan) - Lijiang

Be up very early today and head down to see the sunrise - hopefully clearly over the Sea of Clouds.

This is the poetic China of your imagination - a water-colour painting come to life.

Enjoy the morning to wander the trails and either walk to the foot of the mountain or get the cable car back down.

From here transfer directly to the airport for your flight to Lijiang in Yunnan, via Chongqing.

On arrival in Lijiang you will be met and transferred to your chosen hotel.

Overnight Lijiang. Breakfast & Lunch included.

Day 12: Lijiang

Enjoy a morning visit to the Yak Meadow of the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain with a cable car trip included.

This morning also includes a spectacular outdoor singing and dancing performance performed at 3,100 m above sea level with Jade Dragon Snow Mountain as the backdrop.

Enjoy a local lunch before visiting a Naxi minority village and its ancient wall paintings in the afternoon.

Baisha Village nestles beneath Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, 8 km from Lijiang Old Town.

The village is really atmospheric, with Naxi people hurrying with worn bamboo crates of vegetables, goods being carried on horseback along dusty paths and elderly Naxi villagers passing the time of day. It's a great spot for photographers.

Enjoy the evening at leisure.

Overnight Lijiang. Breakfast & Lunch included.

Day 13: Lijiang

In the morning visit Zhiyun Temple and a nearby village.

Standing by the mirror-like Lashi Lake, Zhiyun Temple is one of the five famous temples in Lijiang, built during the Qing Dynasty.

The afternoon is free for your own explorations of Lijiang. Your guide can assist with recommendations for things to do, places to see and dining suggestions.

Overnight Lijiang. Breakfast & Lunch included.

Day 14: Lijiang - Tiger Leaping Gorge - Shangri-la

This morning visit Tiger Leaping Gorge and enjoy a short walk there.

Tiger Leaping Gorge is one of the deepest gorges on the planet, with spectacular scenery to rival anywhere in China.

The first ‘Bay’ of the Yangtze is located here, a stretch of the Yangtze which curves around a mountain and an area of some historical significance in China.

A packed lunch is included en-route to Shangri-la.

Formerly known as Zhongdian, Shangri-la (as it was officially renamed in 2001) swirls with the smell of wood and charcoal permeating its cold, dry air.

Here, ruddy-faced Tibetans stand out from the Han Chinese, as does their architecture: square, three-storey homes with bright scrollwork trimming them.

Tea is mixed with yak butter for a high-calorie drink in this shivery climate.

Overnight Shangri-la. Breakfast & Lunch included.

Day 15: Shangri-La (Zhongdian)

Enjoy a morning visit to Gedan Songzanlin, the largest Tibetan Buddhist temple in Yunnan.

Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant and explore the old town in the afternoon, with a visit to a local family.

Gedan Songzanlin is really the best-preserved Tibetan city in China.

Overnight Shangri-La. Breakfast & Lunch included.

Day 16: Shangri-La - Kunming

Enjoy the morning at leisure to relax or explore on your own.

After lunch (not included), transfer to the airport for your flight to Kunming, the 3rd largest city in South-west China, and the political, cultural, economic and transportation centre of Yunnan.

On arrival meet your guide and transfer to your chosen hotel with the rest of the day at leisure.

Overnight Kunming. Breakfast & Lunch included.

Day 17: Kunming - Yuanyang

Set off in the morning for the rice terraces at Yuanyang, with lunch en-route.

The Yuanyang rice terraces are a major highlight and are, without a doubt, the most beautiful in China.

Cascading down the mountainside through bamboo canals, the water transforms the mountain face into a truly wonderful sight.

Stop at the hotel and head to Laohuzui, literally 'The Tiger’s Mouth', to enjoy the sunset.

Here rice terraces continue as far as the eye can see, and the panorama is breath-taking.

Overnight Yuanyang. Breakfast & Lunch included.

Day 18: Yuanyang

Make a very early start to admire the sunrise at Duoyishu before returning to the hotel for breakfast.

Visit a local market in a Hani Minority Village. The Hani, otherwise known as the Akha in Southeast Asia, number around 1.5 million and are mainly to be found in Yunnan and are well known for their  art of rice terrace sculpting and drainage systems.

The busy market is to be savoured for its traditional hustle and bustle and its bright and vivid colors.

Continue with a 4-5 hour walk through the rice terraces, starting at Duoyishu and finishing at Bada in time for a stunning sunset over the terraces.

Overnight Yuanyang. Breakfast & Lunch included.

Day 19: Jianshui

Begin with a visit to Jianshui's Confucius Temple, which, despite its remoteness from the heart of 'Classical China', is still considered to be one of the most beautiful in the country.

The surrounding Chinese parks are usually filled with the elderly chatting and playing Mahjong.

Visit two 19th century residences; The Zhang Family Estate and The Zhu Family Estate.

The Zhu Estate is located at the heart of the old town and is one of the most stunning examples of traditional housing in the entire country.

The Zhang Estate is located at Tuanshan, around 15km from Jianshui. This seemingly timeless village is an interweaving lattice of avenues that hide the stunning former residences of merchants, who made their money in the salt trade.

Before returning to Jianshui, visit the Twin Dragon Bridge, one of the oldest bridges in all of China.

Overnight Jianshui. Breakfast & lunch included.

Day 20: Kunming

Visit the county of Lunan, to discover one of the major attractions of the region: Shilin or The Stone Forest.

Due to its proximity to Kunming, Shilin can become a bit of a tourist trap. However, only a small part of the 26,000 hectare site is crowded and it is easy to escape the busier areas.

Head to the quieter and less frequented Black Stone Forest, which is roughly 10km away from the main site, but just as impressive.

Overnight Kunming. Breakfast & Lunch included.

Day 21: Fly to UK

Transfer to the airport for your flight back to the UK.

Day 22: Arrive UK

Arrive back in the UK

As this is a private tour, there are no set departure dates. We can advise you on the best times of your to travel, and some times to avoid.

Which Airlines do you use?

We work with all the major airlines flying to China.

Typically for China, British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, KLM, Air France, Cathay Pacific, Finnair and Air China would be airlines we often use.

However, just let us know your preferred airline if you have one. We can organise flights from any regional destination in the UK.

Which Hotels do you use?

We're careful with our choice of hotels, but we're guided by our customers also. If you have some preferred hotels, just let us know.

We specialise in boutique hotels and so we will often suggest some of our favourite smaller hotels where we think these will be suitable.

China is a destination where large hotels predominate. These are geared for business and group travellers as the Chinese usually travel in groups. We try to suggest smaller more personal hotels where we can.

In China, staying in a traditional Courtyard style hotel for a night or two is a great option and something we recommend.

Bear in mind however that beds can sometimes be hard and comfort levels aren't always the same as they might be in a standard hotel.

We keep on top of hotel developments in China from our office in Vietnam and regularly inspect the hotels we use.

Do you cater for Solo Travellers & Families?

Yes, we have many solo travellers, and China is generally a very safe destination for those travelling alone.

China offers some great activities and sights for families, whatever the ages of the children.

How long have you been organising holidays to China?

We've been organising tailor made holidays to China for over 10 years.

Our team has a wealth of combined experience in the industry and our Director has been involved in organising holidays to China and beyond since the early 1990's.

Our partners on the ground in China have over 20 years experience in operating there. They are managed by a team of local people and expats, which we find is a combination which works very well indeed.

They understand China inside out and have a strong infrastructure of staff, guides and vehicles. We've had the same partnership in China for over 10 years.

How does your office in Vietnam help?

We have our own staff in Saigon, Vietnam which helps in many ways with our customers in the Far East.

It helps us to keep on top of any new hotel and travel developments in the region and forge stronger relationships with hotels and other partners.

We regularly do our own inspections of hotels and destinations in the region.

Should our clients need any assistance during a trip, we always have at least one of our own staff on the same time zone, and we're open 7 days a week in Saigon.
