Cocoa Island by COMO

Simple yet sophisticated, contemporary yet indigenous, but always deliberately restrained - Cocoa Island by COMO is a gently cosseting Maldives luxury hotel that reflects the serene soul of the Maldives.

Cocoa Island is in the less developed South Male Atol, only a 40-minute speedboat ride from Male. To the west lies Kandooma Channel, one of the best dive sites in the Maldives; on the other side is a quiet reef for snorkelling flanked by a curl of beach, which tapers into a spit of sand – picture perfect Maldives.

Cocoa Island’s 33 over water suites and villas are like no other luxury resort in the Maldives. Cocoa Island’s very spacious Dhoni-boat inspired rooms arc out from the island along raised wooden walkways, and offer private terraces with ocean views and direct access into the ocean.

Whites and blues dominate interiors of the timber villas, with only the subtlest nod to a certain local rustic aesthetic, creating a chic beach hut feel to some of the most charming luxury villas in the Maldives.

Cocoa Island is tiny – a walk around the island will take 10 minutes. The sand is a white castor sugar texture, the lagoon water warm and crystal clear, archetypal Maldives.

Cocoa Island has a luxurious spa, plenty of activities, healthy dining and a gorgeous infinity swimming pool.

What’s so Special?

COMO is renowned for its spas and COMO Shambhala Retreat at Cocoa Island is no exception – expect a blissful spa experience.

The cuisine is a real highlight at Cocoa Island, underpinning the whole Como philosophy. Cuisine is very health orientated with lots of fresh fish and non-processed ingredients.

There is excellent snorkelling and the dive spots in the Kandooma channel offer some of the best diving in the Maldives.

Bear in Mind

Cocoa Island by COMO, Maldives is one of the top luxury boutique resorts in the Maldives and is priced accordingly, but is great value and the cost of dining isn’t by any means prohibitive for the Maldives. Most guests suggest Half-board is the better option.

Villas aren’t completely private, although the sundecks have a high degree of privacy.

The location is only 40-minutes by speedboat from the airport.

Dhoni Suites

These 8 split-level Suites (75 sq. m.) designed in the form of a local Dhoni (fishing boat) have very comfortable King-size or twin beds and stand out for the generous indoor seating area with a Balinese day-bed, large bathroom and private terrace.

Beds are set on a raised area next to the living space.

The spacious light-filled living area leads onto a private sundeck with two chaise lounges, a dining table and direct access to the lagoon.

The bathroom contains a single vanity with separate bathtub & shower.

Dhoni Loft Suites

The 9 Dhoni Loft Suites (110 sq. m.) are quirky and spacious. Full-length glass windows on three sides surround expansive living areas, which have vaulted ceilings; a staircase leads to the loft, fitted with a plush King-size bed and en-suite.

A larger bathroom on the lower level contains a double vanity unit, separate bathtub and shower.

The sundeck has loungers and a dining table and there is direct access to the lagoon.

These nine rooms are great for families because of an expansive downstairs living area (which doubles up as a sleeping area for children) and then the master bedroom on a mezzanine level, just beneath the rafters.

Features in all rooms:

  • Air Con
  • Antique colonial ceiling fan
  • Free Wi-Fi
  • 42-inch LCD TV with Satellite channels
  • DVD
  • iPod dock
  • Minibar
  • Tea and coffee making facilities
  • Nespresso machine
  • IDD phone
  • Safe

Dining

At Cocoa Island, eat like a castaway - fresh lobster, caught locally, cooked in the Keralan style. Dine feet-in-the-sand at the main restaurant, Ufaa, beneath an alang-alang pavilion and huge Maldivian sky.

Menus change daily, blending Indian and Sri Lankan traditions with an emphasis on seafood, tandoor and organic, locally sourced produce.

There is also a hotel bar, Faru, open from 10am until midnight, serving fine wines, exotic cocktails and energising juices.

With COMO Shambhala cuisine, guests can benefit from a wide and changing variety of menus (breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as room service), which focus on nutritious, organic and raw ingredients. You can east very healthily at Cocoa Island.

COMO uses local nut milk as an alternative to dairy and soy. Honey is used instead of processed sugars. Fish is an important feature on our menus - caught and brought straight to your plate.

Breakfast is a-la-carte, with a great choice of interesting alternatives.

Private dining of course can be arranged around the resort.

Which Airlines do you use?

We work with all the major airlines flying to the Maldives.

Typically for the Maldives we will use British Airways for direct flights to the Maldives between November and March.

Sri Lankan Airlines is also a great option for flights to the Maldives, especially of course if combining the Maldives with a Sri Lanka tour.

The flying time for direct flights is around 10 hours, making the Maldives a little shorter flying time than going to South East Asia.

We also commonly use Emirates via Dubai, Qatar Airways via Doha and Etihad via Abu Dhabi. These all allow stopover options in the Arabian Gulf to create a multi-centre holiday.

Regional connections from across the UK are available.

Which Hotels do you use?

We're careful with our choice of resorts in the Maldives, but we're guided by our customers also. If you have some preferred hotels, just let us know.

We specialise in boutique & luxury hotels and so we will often suggest some of our favourite smaller luxury hotels where we think these will be suitable.

We understand that choosing a resort in the Maldives can be a bit bewildering, especially as they all look so similar!

That's where our expertise can help - it's always useful to speak to someone who's been to lots of different islands in the Maldives.

Do I need a visa for the Maldives?

If you're travelling on British Passports, no visa is required for stays of up to a month.

Please double check before travel however as visa requirements are subject to change at any time.

How long have you been organising holidays to the Maldives?

We've been organising tailor made holidays to the Maldives since 2009.

We use a very reliable local partner in the Maldives for transfers and to assist our clients in the Maldives. They are a family owned company who are one of the most established and respected local travel companies.

We keep up to date with developments in the Maldives with regular visits and through our local contacts.

When is the best time to visit the Maldives?

The driest time of year to visit the Maldives is normally between November and March. This is high season in the Maldives and you can expect dry and settled conditions most of the time.

What board basis should I choose in the Maldives?

You'll find there is a wide range of options in the Maldives, from b&b, Half and Full Board, All Inclusive and variations on All Inclusive options.

Because of the isolated location, dining in the Maldives is expensive by almost any standard. Bear this in mind when comparing meal options.

How do I get to my resort in the Maldives?

Some resorts in the Maldives can be reached by speedboat from Male. This makes for a convenient and easy transfer. You'll be met at the airport on arrival and taken on foot the short distance to your boat transfer.

Seaplane transfers in the Maldives are used for islands further afield. These are usually in 18-seater De Havilland Twin Otters which fly in daylight hours only, departing from the seaplane port next to the International Airport.
