Where to go in Uttar Pradesh

Uttar Pradesh is a state in the north of India which is home to a great cultural tradition, where two of the great rivers of India flow - The Ganges and the Yamuna.

Agra

Agra is of course is one of the most famous destinations in the world, simply because of the great 'Monument to Love' -the Taj Mahal. Of course a visit to Agra is at the top of many people's lists of places to see in India and it's the number one place to go in Uttar Pradesh.

There is more to Agra than just the Taj Mahal however. Bird enthusiasts will want to consider a visit to the Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary or the Soor Sarovar Bird Sanctuary. The abandoned city of Fatehpur Sikri is also well worth a visit, within easy reach of Agra.

Within Agra itself be sure to visit Agra Fort and Akbar's Tomb as well and not just rush to the Taj and see nothing else.

Varanasi

Varanasi, one of the world's oldest cities is one of the great holy cities of India, located by the River Ganges.

Varanasi is the place to come to witness the deep vein of spirituality running through India. It can be a very moving experience to spend a few hours in Varanasi and witness the spectacle of life and death by the river as funeral pyres are lit and families come to purify themselves in the water of the Holy Mother Ganges.

Lucknow

Lucknow, the 'City of the Nawabs', is a city which will be forever associated with colonial times and in particular the Siege of Lucknow during the Indian Rebellion in 1857.

Lucknow is the capital of Uttar Pradesh and the state's largest city, the 11th largest in India.

The city is known for it's great local cuisine and it's archtitectural heritage.

Jhansi - Deogarh

Jhansi is known for it's imposing fort and its militaristic history dating back to the 12th century.

Deogarh is a riverside town famous for its 5th century Dashavatar Temple as well as nearby  rock-cut caves from a similar period.
