East Coast Malaysia

The East Coast of Malaysia is more traditional and conservative than the west coast and offers great diving, picturesque islands and a quieter pace of life.

Divers should head for Perhentian Island, Redang or Tioman Island, all of which offer laid-back island style living and access to some world class diving.

Tioman Island is about 3-4 hours by car and boat from Singapore and offers a jungle-clad interior, great marine life and white sand beaches.

White sand beaches, a lazy laid-back vibe and great swimming make the Perhentian Islands a great option for those looking for a simple island beach holiday in Malaysia.

The fabulous Tanjong Jara Resort is the one truly luxurious Malaysian beach resort on the East Coast, sister resort to Pangkor Laut and ideal for travel between April and November when the climate is perfect.

Kuala Terengganu

Kuala Terengganu is easily reached by regular flight from Kuala Lumpur in under an hour and is the main airport serving the east coast of Peninsula Malaysia.

The East Coast of Malaysia is more traditional and conservative than the west coast and offers great diving, picturesque islands and a quieter pace of life.

The beaches along the east coast of Malaysia are quite lovely, with little going on other than the odd resort and sleepy Kampung (traditional village).

The fabulous Tanjong Jara Resort is the one truly luxurious Malaysian beach resort on the East Coast, sister resort to Pangkor Laut and ideal for travel between April and November when the climate is perfect.

Other than Tanjong Jara, resorts in this corner of Malaysia tend to be much more low-key, traditional and basic.

Tanjong Jara Resort

Tanjong Jara Resort is a sanctuary of luxury and well-being steeped in age-old Malay traditions.

Designed to reflect the elegance and grandeur of 17th century Malay palaces, this 99-room resort offers an authentic taste of the region's spirit and an enduring embodiment of the gentle Malay arts of service and hospitality.

The philosophy of the Resort is based on the Malay concept of Sucimurni, which emphasises purity of spirit, health and wellbeing.

Explore the reefs off Tenggol Island, part of the Terengganu Marine Park and approximately 45 minutes by speedboat; the seasonal diving and snorkelling in the surrounding waters is one of Asia's best kept secrets.

Tioman Island

Off the east coast of Malaysia, Tioman Island is about 4 hours or so from Singapore by car and boat and offers a jungle-clad interior, great marine life and white sand beaches.

Tioman Island can also be reached by a combination of car and boat from Kuala Lumpur.

It's a little longer from Kuala Lumpur but makes for a great combination with a stay in Malaysia's capital.

The best boutique resort on Tioman Island is Japamala, which offers rustic-chic in a stunning natural setting.

Tunamaya, a simple boutique resort on Tioman Island offers an alternative to Japamala.

A holiday to Tioman Island is best taken between May and October as the monsoon can be quite severe between November and April.

The airport in Tioman is currently closed to all but charter flights.

Japamala Resort

The best boutique resort on Tioman Island, and one of the most popular boutique resorts in Malaysia, Japamala is a secluded and peaceful boutique beach resort overlooking a fantastic white sand beach with a backdrop of lush jungle.

The emphasis really is on nature at Japamala as well as on great dining and a sense of escape.

Japamala is rustic eco-chic and will really suit those looking for a great beach and simple natural accommodation in an away-from-it-all location.

Japamala consists of traditional Malay villas and chalets with indoor and outdoor living. Many villas offer stunning views and all have contemporary features complementing the eco design.

Japamala is set amongst 11 acres of lush landscape criss-crossed by natural streams and backed by steep cliffs and towering boulders.

Japamala's sister hotel in Kuala Lumpur is Villa Samadhi and a stay at both hotels offers a great combination for a boutique holiday in Malaysia.

Perhentian Islands

The Perhentian Islands off Peninsula Malaysia's unspoilt East coast comprise two small islands, Perhentian Kecil (small) and Perhentian Basar (big).

Besar has the larger resorts, whilst Kecil offers mostly backpacker accommodation.

The Perhentians are a divers and snorkellers paradise with some of the best diving in Asia.

White sand beaches, a lazy laid-back vibe and great swimming make the Perhentian Islands a great option for those looking for a simple island beach holiday in Malaysia.

Tuna Bay

Tuna Bay Island Resort is a charming beachfront 46-room boutique resort in the Perhentian Islands on the island of Behar, with stunning views over Perhentian Kecil.

Tuna Bay occupies a quiet, untouched part of Perhentian Island surrounded by tropical jungle, on a broad expanse of powdery white sand and blessed with turquoise blue sea right on the door step.

Accommodation consists of 46 cool and spacious wooden chalets set either right on the beachfront, shaded by coconut palms, or around a pretty garden area.

The wooden chalets on stilts boast air-conditioning and covered terraces, and are fitted with tropical bamboo furniture.
