Orangutans & Dragons Borneo, Java & Bali
Orangutans & Dragons — Borneo, Java & Bali
An extraordinary journey combining the rainforests of Borneo, the ancient temples of Java, a volcanic sunrise at Mount Bromo, Komodo dragons and the coral reefs of Indonesia — finishing with three nights in Bali.
Begin in Sandakan on the edge of Borneo's rainforest with visits to the Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary and the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre — two of the most important wildlife conservation centres in Southeast Asia. Two nights of river safaris on the Kinabatangan follow, one of the last places on earth where proboscis monkeys, pygmy elephants, hornbills and wild orangutans share the same stretch of river.
From Borneo, fly to Yogyakarta in Java for two days among the extraordinary temple complexes of Borobudur and Prambanan — two of the greatest archaeological sites in the world. A scenic train journey across Java leads to Mount Bromo, where a pre-dawn jeep ride to the crater rim produces one of the most memorable sunrises in Southeast Asia.
The journey moves east to Labuan Bajo for a full day private boat excursion into Komodo National Park — UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to the world's largest lizard. Pink Beach on the return offers excellent snorkelling among some of the richest coral reefs on earth.
Three nights in Jimbaran, Bali — including a waterfall excursion into the Ubud interior — bring the journey to a gentle and well-earned close.
As with all of our holidays, this itinerary is completely tailor-made and can be adjusted to suit your interests, time available and budget. Just let us know your preferences.

Day 4: Kuching - Nanga Sumpa
Pick up from your hotel in Kuching around 8:30 a.m and drive to Batang Ai reservoir (4½ hours).

The Semenggoh orangutan rehabilitation centre is 24 km from Kuching and trains orphaned or rescued orangutans how to survive in the wild.
Over 20 orangutans live in forest within the nature reserve and often return to the centre at feeding times.
Depart your hotel at around 8:15 am. On arrival at Semanggoh, head to the briefing area for an introductory talk about the Rehabilitation Centre.
After a brief talk from the rangers, take a short walk along a trail to the feeding area to watch the orangutans come down from the trees for a free meal.
This tour to Semenggoh is arranged to coincide with the morning orangutan feeding time, which takes place between 9 and 9:30 am.
Although it is very likely that orangutans will be seen, they are in a semi-wild environment, so sightings cannot be guaranteed.

Nanga Sumpah Longhouse
About 1.5 hours by boat from Batang Ai, Nanga Sumpa Lodge offers clean rooms with western-style toilets, mosquito netting, mattresses and clean bedding.
The lodge has 18 rooms with raised sleeping platforms. The majority of the rooms accommodate 2 people. There are two larger rooms that are suitable for families and can accommodate 2 adults and 2 children.
The lodge has flush toilets and showers and piped water supply. A generator runs from 6.30 pm to 10.30 pm. After 10.30 pm traditional oil lamps are used to light the lodge. Meals are prepared in the lodge and feature fresh jungle vegetables and other local delicacies.
Nanga Sumpa is a jungle lodge located in a relatively remote area of Borneo. The facilities reflect the remote location and are somewhat basic. Many of our guests don’t mind this as the beauty of the area and the Iban people are the real attractions.
If you are looking for a bit more luxury the Batang Ai Longhouse Resort by Hilton offers hotel standard facilities and air-conditioned rooms.
Orangutan live in the Ulu Ai area and sometimes it is possible to see the “man of the forest” in its natural environment.
Kinabatangan Riverside Lodge
The accommodation in Sukau is comfortable but not luxurious.
We think it is in keeping with the location and the Kinabatangan Riverside Lodge is a much better option than other lodges such as Sukau River Lodge.
Rooms are all en-suite with ceiling fans and hot showers.
There is a wildlife trail by the lodge along which birdlife, red-leaf monkeys and sometimes orangutans are spotted.
Tabin Wildlife Resort
The charming timber bungalows of Tabin Wildlife Resort come complete with private balcony and hot water shower, a real luxury in the forest.
A variety of birds, insects and even small mammals can be sighted quite easily within the resort which is set amongst the rainforest alongside the Lipad River.
Wildlife
Please note that as all the animals are in a wild natural habitat there is no 100% guarantee of seeing them.
It is almost guaranteed to see orangutans at Sepilok however as the are adapted to come out of the forest at feeding times during their rehabilitation.
Other wildlife such as elephants are less common but are still frequently spotted, especially around Abai.
Proboscis Monkeys are plentiful in Bako National Park and along the Kinabatangan River.
Your guide on the river cruises in Kinabatangan is likely to spot snakes curled up in the trees by the river or crocodiles lazing on the banks.
Hornbills are common and you would be unlucky not to see some and they are a magnificent sight, especially in flight over the canopy of trees.
When visiting Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary please take note of the park guides.
Orangutans are curious by nature and don't think twice about waltzing off with unguarded items.
Especially - don't take food into the park with you.
Note that the cruises along the river from Sukau are in electric boats.
