Safari Highlights & Zanzibar

This itinerary combines Tanzania's Wildebeest Migration during calving season in the Serengeti, with time in beautiful Lake Manyara National Park and the Ngorongoro Crater before 5 nights on the exotic island of Zanzibar.

The Northern Parks of Tanzania not only offer incredible wildlife, but also provide an insight into local Maasai culture amongst a  diverse and contrasting landscape.

The safari is a privately driven and guided overland 4x4 safari of Tanzania's northern Circuit, meaning the freedom to explore at your own pace.

After visiting Lake Manyara, the Ngorongoro and Serengeti, fly to the island of Zanzibar for a few days to relax in one of Zanzibar's boutique hotels.

Tarangire National Park

Gently undulating and densely vegetated Tarangire National Park forms part of Tanzania’s northern safari circuit and is the least visited of the northern parks.

The Tarangire River runs through the heart of the park, which is easily accessible from Lake Manyara. The park is famous for high concentration of lion and for the large baobab trees.

The northern area of the park is busiest whilst the southern, swampier area retains a real wilderness feel. June to October is the optimum game-viewing season in Tarangire as the animals have returned from the northern Serengeti by this time.

Ngorongoro Conservation Area

The Ngorongoro Crater is without doubt one of the most spectacular natural attractions in Africa and one of the continents best game viewing destinations.

The Ngorongoro Crater is part of the Ngorongoro Conservation area, which also includes the surrounding Ngorongoro Highlands as well as part of the southern Serengeti.

The Ngorongoro Crater is the largest intact collapsed volcanic caldera in the world and acts as a self-contained eco-system rich in game, attracted by the mineral rich grasses and permanent water sources.

A night or two in one of the lodges on the crater rim is an unforgettable way of experiencing Ngorongoro.

Serengeti National Park

The Serengeti is hailed by many as the best safari holiday destination in Africa.

A Serengeti safari offers a chance above all to see the spectacular wildebeest migration as well as outstanding game viewing including the Big 5.

'Serengeti' means 'endless plains' in Maasai and the landscape is vast and beautiful with wide open plains dissected by some notable rivers and dotted with dramatic granite kopjes.

Safari Camps in the Serengeti range from old style traditional luxury mobile safari camps to permanent safari camps.

A Serengeti safari needs to be planned carefully according to the migration season and the style of safari to suit.

Lake Manyara National Park

Lake Manyara National Park is a pretty little park which lies at the foot of the Rift Escarpment and offers a much denser and richer landscape when compared to the other major game parks in the region.

This park is famed for its Elephant and Tree Climbing Lions.

North East Zanzibar

Northeastern Zanzibar is the coastal region of the island stretching South-eastwards from Nungwi and Kendwa as far as the mangroves of Chwaka Bay.

This is a region of traditional Zanzibari fishing villages dotted along long stretches of beautiful palm fringed sandy beach fringed by a coral reef and lapped by the warm, clear turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean.

Boutique hotels along this stretch of Zanzibar include the luxury Matemwe Retreat and Kasha Boutique Hotel.

Honeymooners are attracted by the tranquil beaches, clear water and the handful of romantic boutique hotels.

Zanzibar - North

The northern tip of Zanzibar is home to the busiest beach resorts in Zanzibar, centred on the traditional dhow manufacturing village of Nungwi which has a beautiful beach lined with casuarina and palm trees.

This is Zanzibar at it's busiest and there is now a considerable number of larger resort hotels, predominantly geared towards Italian tourists. 4 km south of Nungwi is the quieter village of Kendwa which has a lovely beach and fewer resorts.

Things do get a little lively here in the evenings with some beach barbeques and beach parties on the full moon.

Nevertheless there are a couple of great boutique hotels in northern Zanzibar offering a more tranquil experience.

Zanzibar - East

The Michamvi Peninsula in the East of Zanzibar is blessed with some spectacular powder white sand beaches and some of the best boutique hotels and resorts in Zanzibar.

Boutique Hotels and small luxury hotels are found along this narrow peninsula which stretches for 10 km into the Indian Ocean.

Boutique hotels such as Anna of Zanzibar, the Palms and Baraza make this area a popular option for a beach holiday to Zanzibar.

Beach resorts along this stretch of Zanzibar's coastline take advantage of superb white sand beaches and a barrier reef which offers some excellent snorkelling locations.

Zanzibar - Stone Town

The World Heritage Site of Stone Town is historically, culturally and architecturally Zanzibar’s most important town.

Stone Town is a place to absorb Zanzibar’s culture and while away some time wandering through the narrow labyrinthine streets and alleyways or simply people watching from a street front café.

Narrow lanes snake between over 2,000 buildings, many with brass-studded doors set within elaborately carved doorframes.

Many visitors take a day trip to Stone Town but a night or two here offers the chance to absorb the atmosphere and attractions at a more leisurely pace.
