Horathapola Coconut Estate

Just an hour from Sri Lanka’s International Airport, Horathapola lies hidden in the beautifully lush landscapes of rural Sri Lanka. Its grand plantation bungalow dating from the early 1900’s has been beautifully restored to host five spacious luxury guestrooms.

The 50 acre estate is a fully functioning organic coconut estate which sustains the livelihoods of about 30 families living in the neighbouring village.

The location just an hour from the airport, makes Horathapola an ideal place to begin a tour of Si Lanka in Sri Lanka or to spend a few relaxing days prior to your departure.

What’s so Special?

The latest addition to Horathapola is a cozy independent Lodge gently hidden from the rest of the other premises for ultimate privacy.

A walk through the estate is a chance to say hello to the ponies, water buffalos, cows and donkeys. A free bullock cart ride is offered to all guests who would like to be shown around the estate.

All rooms are generously spacious and airy with large ceiling fans and air conditioning. Antique furniture and grand bathrooms are nice features.

Upper Floor rooms feature large french windows – great to keep open and enjoy some fresh air and natural cooling. Each room features a private porch or balcony – a great spot for watching starry night skies and fireflies.

Maha Camare

A double room with a beautiful carved Indian four-poster king-sized bed, located on the upper floor with its own large balcony overlooking the garden and pool.

The balcony is a perfect place to have that romantic candle lit dinner. This room is popular with honeymooners.

Watte Camare (Garden Suite)

The Watte Camare is located on the ground floor and has an Ebony king sized bed and a large single Brass bed.

This room opens out to a large verandah leading to the beautiful gardens of Horathapol, perfect for those looking for some solitude!

Pokuna Camare (Pond Room)

This double room is a separate unit set in the gardens. It differs to the rest of the rooms, as the architecture is more contemporary.

A highlight is breakfast on your large verandah whilst looking out at the gorgeous pool and gardens beyond.

Family Suite

The Family Suite located on the upper floor and comprises of a double and triple room. The Suite is ideal for a family with up to 3 children. Alternatively it works perfectly for two couples travelling together.

The rooms are next to each other but are not inter-connected, offering you privacy. The two rooms share a very large common verandah, perfect for that evening drink together.

Family Lodge

The Family Lodge was opened in 2009, a separate unit just a 2 minute stroll along the gardens, offering absolute privacy. It has 2 double bedrooms, so will suit a family of four, or two couples travelling together who want to spend time together.

It has its own roof terrace, perfect for a sundowner whilst enjoying the beautiful surroundings.

Dining

Horathapola Estate is famous for its authentic and truly Sri Lankan cuisine. The typical menu consists of rice and a range of different meat, fish, egg, soya or vegetable dishes prepared in Sri Lankan style.

Meals are prepared with fresh ingredients, many of which are grown on the Estate itself. All spices are freshly ground. There is no set menu or buffet.

Apart from the traditional Sri Lankan dishes, there is also a wide variety of western dishes.

The elegant hall and dining area has beautiful terracotta floors, wooden ceiling beams and is furnished with simple but stylish antiques.

Facilities

There are plenty of activities on offer at Horathapola. The estate itself with its large agricultural area invites strolling through the pepper gardens, beneath coconut trees or through paddy fields.

In the middle of the estate you'll find a huge old Nuga tree inhabited by thousands of bats. Watching them take off to their feeding grounds at sunset is a spectacular experience!

Bullock cart rides around the estate are on offer and the diversity of spices, fruits and vegetables grown organically on Horathapola is surprising.

Cycles are available for visiting nearby Buddhist temples or to go check out the small rural villages nearby.

Alternatively a member of the Horathapola staff will take you for a guided village walk.

Day trips down to the beach or to beautiful cultural sites off the beaten track can be organised as well. You should definitely plan some time for Panduvasnuwara and Yapahuwa.

Panduvasnuwara is an easily accessible ancient city you can stroll through, whilstYapahuwa is an old mountain fortress which requires some hiking skills to climb.
